Coach Nicole's Half Marathon Running Music

By , SparkPeople Blogger
I'm happy to say that even though it took a couple days, I am walking like a normal person again! Why was I ever NOT walking normally, you might ask? Well, because last Sunday I ran the Flying Pig half marathon (13.1 miles) in Cincinnati. I trained hard for this race and during every race, I set a goal and try my very hardest to reach it—I actually race myself and my past times!

That takes a lot out of my body and leaves me sore for a few days…and sometimes even during the race itself. But one thing I do to keep my energy boosted and my motivation high is to play some of my all-time favorite kick-butt running songs.

I don't normally make a playlist specifically for a race. Generally, I just shuffle through a generic "running" playlist I created. But this time, I needed the energy surge that only my favorite songs could provide.

So if you're looking for some of the best running songs to refresh your own workout playlist, look no further.

For those of you who use Spotify app or online, I have this playlist recreated there under my user name MSDRPEPPER (I think also msdrpepper) - Here's the playlist (you will need to be logged into your account before you can see the playlist and play it - if you aren't already a Spotify member, you can sign up for your free account. They put the heat on to subscribe, but I don't !!).

I love your music list! Thank you for taking the time to make the list and sharing them! Report
Some of these links are broken/old--perhaps should be updated. Report
Love this! Thanks coach Nicole! Report
I do not run, but it is dangerous to run with no street hearing. I do use it for the treadmill or other home workouts. Report

I have not yet started exercising. But I like the idea of making a Playlist of my favorite songs to get me started and keep me motivated. Report

I have been afraid to run with music on roads, just because I am nervous about not hearing cars. I see plenty of people do it, I would just need to stay aware. I am going to try this on my long run Sunday and see if it helps with motivation. Report
A little embarrassed to say, but "Another Postcard" by Barenaked Ladies is the perfect bpm for me to push my pace and a pleasingly goofy song. It hits my running playlist around the beginning of the last mile of my long run, so gets me going on the home stretch. Report
Congratultions, Coach Nicole! I've always heard that race is a fun one, and I'm sure you rocked it. Thanks for always being such a positive inspiration for the rest of us!! Report
I have a few of these in my playlist, but I am looking for some good fast songs. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks fellow Sparkers!!! Report

PIL - Rise and Pink - Get This Party Started Report
Thanks! I added many of these songs to my workout list :) Report
I love to run with music. I am impressed by your dedication. Report
Way to go!! I have a playlist of songs that I like to listen to while exercising (my "cardio" playlist) that I will randomly shuffle through. A couple of them are on your list too! I will have to listen to the others and maybe get a few new ones - I like to add to or change up my "cardio" playlist fairly often to keep it interesting. Report

I recognize a few of those tunes! THANKS for sharing your amazing race pictures! So proud of you!!! Report
Congratulations!! The Flying Pig is on my bucket list. Report

Great list! I have separate playlists for 5K and 10K runs, and I'm in the process of expanding for a half-marathon. I have Battleflag, Without You, and We Found Love on my ipod, but wasn't sure if I should include them or not. I will now, thanks! Report
I use to listen to audio books when I was walking. Now that i walk at a faster pace, and am even doing some light jogging, I have found that upbeat music really helps me keep my pace up. Now I wouldn't even consider going out for a walk or jog without my playlist. :) Report

I like songs that are uplifting. Whitney Houstons Step by Step is a good one. Also the Foo Fighters Hero. Chic Good Times. You can pretty much find a song that is going to make you want to move. The beauty of music. Report
My playlist is CRAZY!!! I have everything from country, OLD country, rap, 80s, 90s, classical, heavy metal, rock...you name it...fun when I shuffle what comes out next....alot of times really steps up my workout!! ALSO I am adding some of your songs to my list...thanks! and congrats! Report

Since i pretty much can't stand most of the current music i pretty much only recognized Pink and coldplay from on her list.
I like listening to the older stuff like the B-52's and some of the better rock and new wave music of the 70's-90's Santana, Van Halen,U2 heck there's even some country music i like as well and i like a mix of genre so i get different tempos too. Report
I'm out of touch with current music. I'll have to play the songlist to see which songs I have heard, but don't know the title.

Good form at the finish line, Coach Nicole! Report

Congratulations Coach Nicole & all you Walkers, Runners & Bikers ! Woohoo! Report
Mookball, as opposed to what, sitting on a couch? Report
I also walked the Flying Pig half marathon last weekend. I didn't PR, but I did finish & that is a victory in itself with the heat. I listened to tracks I got from MotionTraxx.com. Shout out to the group of ladies with the shirts that read: It doesn't matter how slow you go, you're still lapping the ones on the couch. That is soooo true. Report
I agree that any finish line crossed is a victory, especially with a half-marathon! Congratulations, Coach Nicole. I love that you wear a sweatband too. I have to when I run, otherwise I'll have sweat dripping all over my face. Thanks for making me feel less like a dork. Report
Congratulations, Nicole, you are an inspiration to me and others! I listen to contemporary Christian music when I walk to motivate me to walk faster! Right now I have Chris Thomlin's "And If Our God is For Us..." cd that keeps me going to do a better one each time I walk (either my 5k or 6 mile walks). I love your exercise videos and have your 28 day workout cd too! Report
Congratulations on your acomplishments! Report
I am old... 57 years old. I don't run anymore because I fell and injured my right knee. But I still do 1/2 marathons. I walk them. My best time is 2:58. I'm doing another one May 20th. I don't expect a great time because the last few months have been difficult, but I will finish and that's great. I have hundreds of songs. Sometimes I listen to whole musicals like Evita or Les Miserables... love those two sound tracks. But mostly I have compiled a couple of different playlists for training and for the race itself. I also have playlists for the gym.. for strength training, etc. Report
I like lots of "Oldies", Beatles, Elvis, Bee-Gees, etc. Report
Outkast - Hey Ya!

Also, I love listening to Coheed and Cambria, and actually older Cradle of Filth is good to run to, though that probably isn't your thing judging by your playlist here... Report
These are GREAT -- I already had a few but was in need of new music, so I downloaded about a dozen more using a gift card I got for my birthday. Now I'm all set with new tunes for my next half! Report
