I had eaten so called "good carbohydrates" for two years and I had not achieved my goals. I was diagnosed with Metabolic syndrome and I was 160 pounds over weight.
On 11-2-08, I committed to following the Atkins Nutritional Approach. It has been shown to lower weight faster than all other diets, as well as lowering blood sugar, LDL cholesterol and Triglycerides and raising HDL. For people, like myself with Metabolic Syndrome and Morbidly Obese, itseemed like a good dietary approach that makes sense for me people at that particular stage of my journey.
On 11-20-08, I found the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet and I switched to it as it allows a little more variety. Like Atkins it is based on the fact that insulin is the major problem in weight gain and coronary disease. I have followed it since that date and I have continued the weight loss that I restarted with Atkins, but with more dietary choices. It makes social meals much easier, with little or no explanations necessary if you plan ahead. I've also joined the Carbhohydrate Addicts team for mutual support and encouragement.
After being on the Carbohydrates Addicts Diet for a while, my weight hit a plateau and i was diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor recommended Metformin, but I wanted to find a way that would not have side effects like drugs. I found Mike Adams' program on line on How to Halt Diabetes in 25 Days and started to follow that program. It slowly brought my blood sugar down to a pre-diabetic level and I continued this for a while and increased my exercise to a hour or more per day on the rowing machine.
As of June 1, 2010, i started following the Hippocrates Health Institutes Living Food Program as written about by it's director Brian R. Clement. My weight has started dropping again and my blood sugar is within the normal range. It is a little like the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, except fruits are the carbs that you restrict to once a day, instead of bread, cakes, pies, or cookies. As the Hellers' would say it is a super "Option" that takes you into the realm of really healthy eating as everything you eat is not cooked or processed in any way.
Yesterday I started a new team called the "2HIP (Hippocrates Health Institute Program)" team. I invite everyone to join me on this phase of my journey to health. I am no longer diabetic, I've lost 60+ pounds since I started and I am losing weight every week, sometimes every day. I feel great and I'm very satisfied with my living food meals.
From Atkins to Living Food Vegan in two years, who would have guessed?
On May 5th my numbers crossed the line, just barely, and I was diagnosed as a diebetic. I immediately went on the web to Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, and bought his downloadable book, 25 Days to Reverse Diabetes. After reading it, I decided to start practicing the plan from day 1 and I have lost one to two pounds a week, lowered my cholesterol, and feel great. I've eliminated all sugars, all diet sweeteners, all refined and bleached flours, all beverages except plain filtered water. I exericse every day and usually row one hour a day for six and do strength exercises on one day with no rowng, perhaps walking or some other aerobic exercise, just to rest my rowing muscles. It's working! I'll have mhy blood panels done next week and I will see my doctor the following week and I will report the results here.
My blood sugar dropped out of the diabetic range, but still in the pre-diabetic area. I went on a 100% raw food program modeled after the Hippocrates Health Institute's recommendations and I brought my blood sugar even lower into the healthy range.
April 8, 2011 ~ I'm experimenting now with Dr. Mercola's Nutritional Types recommendations and his program for exercise combined with the recommendations of Dr. Diana Schwarzbein. I doing fast intervals of rowing two days a week and 4 days of strength training, with slow rowing to balance the hour on strength training days.

My Goals:
My goal is to reverse my Real Age and improve my quality of life in all areas. My weight goal is: 190 pounds. My physical fitness goal is to reverse and stop "the so called aging process" so that I can enjoy life to the fullest as long as I live. My recreational goal is to row on water and take rowing tours in Europe.
My Program:
I row on a Concept2 rowing machine doing High Intensity Intervals twice a week and do resistance machines work outs four times a week according to the Power of 10 method alternating upper body and lower body routines to allow full muscle recovery. I log my meters rowed online at Concept2.com and participate in their individual and team challenges.
I'm following Dr. Mercola's Nutritional Type diet recommendation with 80-90% Live, Organic, Vegan, & Energy foods. I am still eating wild caught fish as part of my 10-20% non-vegan and lightly cooked portions.
Personal Information:
I live in San Diego California. I am now 64 years old and happily married for 32 years. I have a 28 year old son and his wife, a lovely new daughter. They continues to inspire me with thier creativity, intelligenc, love, discipline, and achievements.
Other Information:
I have discovered a passion for rowing on a Concept 2 rowing machine, a great machine to exercise the whole body combining resistance, aerobic, and calming exercise, depending upon the intensity your row with. I row for the USC University Alumni team online. I love the motivation that I get online from Concept@.com and the Indoor Rower's Team on SparkPeople.
