Hi! This is my place to check in with what's going on with my body, my emotions and attitudes...whatever...while I'm on this weight-loss and maintenence walk, so I figured calling it a "Looking Glass" was rather appropriate. (Can you tell I have a soft spot in my heart for Alice-in-Wonderland?) Anyway, welcome! I hear the Mad Hatter is pouring some lovely tea, and I do believe that's allowed :)

Well, a whole lot has happened since I started in 2008!
I've lost about 45 lbs, (all together...some of it before I started with SparkPeople), and I'm feeling pretty darned terrific. I've been keeping that weight off for about 4 years now. I'm still working on the last 5-10 lbs.

I'm (usually, mostly) eating much better than I once was. I try to put more fruits and veggies in my diet and eat in a more balanced way. I'm not perfect at it, and I don't have a much patience at all for logging food. Still, I'm making better choices. Soda and potato chips just don't seem worth the calories anymore, for instance. Sweets and breads are still my bug-a-boos.

I'm pretty good these days about exercising (basically cardio) at least 3 hours per week. A lot of weeks, (especially when the weather is nice), it's just plain old ordinary walking. I do right around 3.5 mph these days, but I wasn't going that fast when I started. So if you're worried walking won't do much good...well, it does!! When the weather isn't as good or I'm just feeling like I want a tougher work-out, I get on my elliptical machine.

I'm not doing huge things, but I'm steadily doing small things that end up making a huge difference.

My blood pressure is down and I'm off those blood-pressure meds. My cholesterol and tryglyceride numbers are down. All pretty great stuff.

These days I'm working on fighting the little sugar demon that still nags and niggles at me all the time. I'm looking to incorporate some new things, too, maybe, to try to keep myself interested and motivated. This is the point in the game where I need to step it up if there is going to be any more progress. I'm not finding that all that easy.

Anyway, there was a time when I really believed none of this could happen for me. Sometimes it still feels like some kind of miracle. But it did happen. And it can happen for you, too!

My Goals:
The big reason I started working on my weight is health: Keep those triglycerides where they ought to be (my doctor said they were much too high), lower my blood pressure (maybe even get off the meds), keep the heart pumping strong and healthy, breathe easier - all that. Of course, feeling better about one's self doesn't hurt!
