My name is Merry and I am a foodaholic. I’ve lost somewhere around 400 pounds with various diets and exercise programs over the past 33 years. Yet here I am – 54 years old – and nearly back up to where I started in 1977.
My first true dieting experience came after the birth of my daughter n 1977. I was mortified that my year-long feeding frenzy had catapulted me from 125 to 207 pounds. Knowing it was time for action, I devised a plan to tackle the weight the only way I knew how – with severe calorie restriction and smoking lots of cigarettes. With that winning combination I was able to lose 90 pounds before my daughter’s first birthday in 1978. Oh…I also ended up with gall stones.
For the next 14 years, my weight was under control - give or take 30 pounds. Then, in 1992, I had a baby and gained 62 pounds during my pregnancy. After a repeat pregnancy in 1994, I lost 67 pounds. With only 22 pounds left to reach my goal weight, I managed to slowly gain most of it back.
I have educated myself on fats, carbs, and proteins, and I don’t believe in counting any of them. Nor do I believe in fad diets. But I do count calories and record every morsel of food that goes into my mouth.
Losing weight is a daily struggle and being healthy a lifelong challenge. And at this point in my life, it's about health and fitness rather than the numbers on the scaele. I understand that I need to make a lifestyle change, but to truly achieve success, I think I need the inspirationa nd motiviation from SparkPeople.
