Setbacks... they do happen

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

- Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights icon

It's easy to stand up and look good when things are going smoothly. When the weight drops off bit by bit and the scale is your friend, it's easy to shimmy into that smaller pair of jeans.

Things change a bit when the scale stops moving. When salads start feeling like challenges rather than an enjoyable bite to eat. When one more glass of water will send you to the insane asylum...

It's hard when you know you're hair is disheveled, you haven't slept more than 8 hours in the past 48, and you don't remember the last veggie you ate, unless a french fry qualifies.

Where are you then?

Me? I've probably got a pint of Ben & Jerry's in one hand and the other is pawing through my closet, looking for long lost running shoes. When things get rough, I have to set a new, very attainable, goal for myself. If I don't... Yikes!

For me it's incredibly easy to fall back on old habits and I seem to lose ground faster and faster. Regaining my step can be a huge challenge, but it's worth it every time.

Today I almost had a setback of my own - I'd set a challenge to myself to get out and about off base and I almost, almost, Almost stayed home... but we got up, got out and walked all over town picking up groceries, visiting stores, etc. (I almost bought some fresh baked sweets too - but I resisted! *grins* Ok, I think it was mostly because my hands were already full, but still... the cakes and ice cream stayed at the store!)

I'm delightfully tired and ready for another day tomorrow - we're headed to Tokyo for coffee with a friend!

*grins* Ordering coffee isn't so bad in bigger cities - Most Japanese have a basic understanding of English anyway, so if I speak clearly, I have no problems. (It helps that the Japanese word for coffee sounds sort of like "coe-hee") *grins*

If all else fails, I can always grab a coffee from the vending machines! It's a little rainy today, so I need to buy an umbrella for the trip, but it should still be fun, I hope!
