The Flood of '09

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

We had a flood here in Atlanta over the weekend. The amount of rain we had was unprecedented. Areas that have no record of ever flooding were under water. The governor is saying the cost to clean up will be close to three-quarters of a Billion dollars.

My family was very lucky. We were not in an area that was under water. We didn't loose any of our belongings or any of our loved ones. We will be remembering in prayer those families who lost possessions & loved ones.

As I watch our community begin the process of cleaning up & rebuilding, I was reminded of the process I am undertaking to rebuild my life. By the time I finally got my head in the right place and started moving my life in a new direction, my body was suffering from the effects of carrying around an extra 100 pounds.

Like our community, I have to realize I'm not going to wake up tomorrow & find myself in the same place I was before the damage was done. It's going to take time and hard work to get to that place. It's gonna take a plan, learning to do things I've never done before & the help of my friends.

Atlanta will recover and rebuild herself and so will I.

Thank you all for your kind words of concern & prayer for our community. We certainly need all the prayer & positive thoughts we can get to help us through a very trying time.

On a positive note I heard that the insurance commissioner is trying to put pressure on the insurance companies to have them pay for flood damage on properties that were not in a 100 year flood plane.

We lived in Powder Springs for 10 years and our house there was a victim of the flood. There is a creek in the backyard that overflowed and the driveway was one that you drive into a split level house. Between those two things, the basement living area flooded big time. My son's girlfriend and several parents of friends live in Lithia Springs . They were not completely flooded but live in sections of the interstate that are and are riding it out until tomorrow.

I saw pictures of Six flags and was shocked. I heard that west paces ferry where the governor lives is also under water (nothing new for them due to bad drainage systems)

My sister in law lives on the banks of the Chickamauga creek in Chattanooga and they have also flooded badly. They have no flood insurance so hopefully, being it just affected the basement, they will be OK.

Good for you on coming to the realization that the affects of being overweight are not something you can totally reverse or erase. But by loosing the weight you can become a new you and maybe even a better you.
