Weighing In in More Ways Than One!

Saturday, May 01, 2010

Over the past 3.5 months, since I found SP, I have read MANY blogs, and many of those have been about weighing-in on regular days. This results, for many people, in disappointment, concern, anguish, etc. along with the occasional "WOOHOO's". I know the scale is an important indicator of success, but it's only one. As I read the blogs I also have noted all the other indicators people use to prove success: clothes fitting better, walking better and farther, feeling healthier, measurements changing, medication doses dropping, etc. All of these are great ways to show success and I use them all.

One thing that I have stopped doing is weighing myself on a regular basis. I only weigh myself now when I have the sense that I've lost weight, usually using one of these other indicators. Sometimes that might be a couple days in a row, sometimes it might be only after a few weeks have gone by. I do this for a couple reasons: one is to diminish the importance of the scale, which for years was my sole arbiter of success and value; the second is to make me focus more on all the other ways to measure success.

Is this working? I believe so. When I do weigh myself I am seldom disappointed. If I see something I am not expecting, I review all the other indicators I've got that prove my success. It's helping immensely in diluting the impact of the number on the scale to the point where it is now just one additional piece of data to add to my collection of indicators.

The other thing that has been interesting is that, even though I have passed 60, there are still times in the month that it doesn't matter what I do, that scale is going to show a 3 pound gain. That takes place over 3 days, and then, on the 4th, as if by magic, those 3 pounds begin to disappear. So, if I weigh myself and show a gain, I don't weigh myself for at least 6 days. It takes 3 days for those 3 pounds to show up, and it takes 3 days for them to disappear. I know this about my body, and no matter what I've done over the years to stop this from happening, nothing has worked. Therefore, I now just accept it and move on. It took me a LLLOOONNNGGG time to get to this point, but now that I'm here, I'm finally comfortable!

I use the weight loss tracker, but I don't post on it every week on the same day. I only post on it when I have shown a loss. So, sometimes that little tracker moves down a couple days in a row, and sometimes it doesn't budge for a week or more. That's okay - I'm working on developing a totally different mindset this time, and this is one of the other things I am doing to help reinforce this new mindset. It helps that I usually only weigh myself when I'm convinced there's something I want to see!

With age, as they say, comes wisdom. I'm just glad I'm still around to try out all these things I've learned through the school of hard knocks over all these years! I do believe this time I not only will lose the weight, which I've done twice before, but this is the last time because I won't have to do it again!

Now I am done weighing in for this blog!

I weigh and post my weight once a week, most of the time. It's hard to make myself post weight gains, but I figure honesty is important in this battle.

I too just stopped weighing. It is better to go by clothes fitting betterand feeling better and healthier. I was tired of being disappointed. I will weigh like you only when I can tell my weight is down.
