“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”- Romans 12:15
Now then the first part of these instructions are easy, everyone wants to partake in the happiness of life. We are always excited to share the good news in our lives, but when was the last time you joyfully shared your or someone else's pain. This brings to mind part of an old hymn that has recently resurfaced, "They will know we are Christians by our love." As Jesus taught love is the greatest commandment of all, first for God, then for our neighbor (Mt 22:37-40). Paul taught that as believers we are given many gifts, but the greatest of all is love (1 Cor. 13:13). Love is not only concerned with happiness and joy, true love is lifting up your brother or sister into joy by sharing in their difficulties.
When Paul wrote this to the church in Rome, he did so to remind them that the persecution which they are enduring is shared by all believers, and they are to be there for each other. We as were they, are to be there in times of need, and joy to rejoice in the blessings and hope the Lord God has provided us through our Saviour Jesus Christ. Even today we are under heavy attack from the enemy, only through continuous unfailing love will we be able to defeat him. Evil cannot exist where there is love, but love can always exist and blossom where there is evil.
Be strong in your love for those close to you, and even stronger for those you consider an enemy.
In Christ my friends,
