My virtual workout adventure

Thursday, August 05, 2010

I've had this cool game and gadget set called Wii Active (or something like that) for months. I never cracked open the case, never took the resistance band out of it's sealed bag. Then one morning after I put on my running clothes and shoes, I just couldn't get myself outside in the heat. Usually if I get into my gear there is no turning back. For some reason I couldn't talk myself into opening the door.

On a whim I decided to pull out the active stuff. I fired up the game and opened up all the fun stuff and I was off; my virtual trainer telling my virtual self how to perform virtual exercises in my air conditioned family room. Punching targets, inline skating, lunges, resistance band bicep curls, there was my virtual self working out on the screen. I kept thinking, "This isn't a workout. This is easy. Am I really doing anything productive here?" My sweaty clothes begged to differ... and the serious sore muscles the next day told an entirely different story.

Woah! That virtual workout was more than just entertaining. I can't believe using those "barely resistant" resistance bands really were doing something! I can't believe the virtual inline skating exercise actually made my butt sore!

I've always loathed strength training and loved running. I know strength training has huge benefits and it is suggested to alternate with cardio. In theory I get it. BUT, I think I've conditioned my brain to believe that if I'm not breathing heavy, I'm not exercising. If I'm running I KNOW I'm getting a good workout. Now, after this Wii active routine and realizing how hard it worked me even when I felt like it was easy, has opened up a whole new world to me.

Does this mean I have a short attention span and can only strength train if I'm being simultaneously entertained? I don't care! I'm working out in air-conditioning this summer with my virtual trainer who gives me words of encouragement and lets me know if my form is off. I'm not giving up running, but this is definitely going to help me with my hatred of strength training. Yahoo!
