What a Mess!!!!

Renovating a 50 year old mid-century fireplace is proving to be an adventure. Originally, it was ten feet wide and covered with flagstone. We have decided to get rid of the firebox on the left side, move it to the center, install a gas fireplace insert and cover it with a concrete stacked stone.
My husband started chiseling away on Tuesday. The deeper he went, the bigger the mess and the weirder the construction. So far he has found six different kind of brick in various stages of with mortar up to two inches thick everywhere. Now he is at a point where the interior construction is very puzzling and we have a phone call in to a fireplace expert for some advice.
I am attempting to upload some photos, but it won't let me right now. I always have to make them smaller first and it proves to be difficult each time. I will edit this blog later to add the photos.
