How SparkPeople has helped me keep beating back depression faster

In 2006 there was a family tragedy that had repercussions that are around today. I was set to retire and now I'm in a major caregiver role, working full time, and fighting being sad over the tragedy.

I knew I was having difficulty being my usual brilliant self at work. I failed at being a caretaker. I was putting on weight. I was sad.

One step at a time. I added back a couple of exercise classes I loved and forced myself to actively participate and not just go through the motions. I tweaked my work assignments to make them enjoyable again. I joined a support group to make me a better caregiver.

And finally, the weight. I thought I was still eating fairly healthy -- the Type 2 diabetes was still undetectible (it flared into real Type 2 in 2000 and a major diet change made it go away). What if my only weight problem was too many calories?

Once the calories were under control, increasing the activity from 2 classes to work to small amounts daily became manageable.

I'm stronger; I'm less sad; I'm still a caregiver, but I'm managing it better.
