Summer 5% challenge

Monday, July 11, 2011

I joined the Firecracker team 5% summer challenge. This will be my 4th (I think - I seem to have lost track!) challenge. One big difference this time is that I will also help lead this team. After all they have done (Which I really didn't have a good idea of the work that went into this team - I knew they did a lot of behind the scenes stuff - but really, they dedicate a LOT of time to this challenge!) I figured this is the least I could do to give back some of what they have given, and hopefully be able to help a fellow sparker reach their goals.

If you know me, you also know I HATE to blog. But somehow, I need to keep track of my goals and just put it out there and be accountable.

This challenge is 8 weeks - 56 days. Here is my plan, my commitment.
The challenge starts July 16, 2011 and ends September 10, 2011

My current weight is : 187.8
My target weight for this challenge is: 178
This will be 5% of my current weight.
That is 1.2 pounds per week.

My calorie range is 1200-1550 per day
I want to concentrate on getting at least 5 freggies eaten per day.
I also want to make sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
I have a struggle with night time snacking, so my plan is to plan and pick a snack early in the day, enter it into my food log, and stick with just that snack.
I also need to avoid buying things that I shouldn't eat, or things that are trigger foods.
If I don't buy it, I can't eat it - this is what I did when I successfully lost weight previously, so I know it works. (duh!)

My exercise plan is pretty consistent already - and I don't want to change much, but I do need to add strength training. I have been pretty lazy with that. I also need to change some things up as I normally play 2 hours of volleyball a week, and we probably won't be playing over the summer - so I need to somehow add another 2 hours of cardio somewhere into my week.

My plan is to:
Jog 3 days a week - I am using the spark your way to a 10K program and I am currently on week 5, which means that before this challenge is over, I should be able to run/walk a 10K.

My challenges will be going on vacation and not being in total control as to what I will be served. However, I still have control as to how much I eat. I plan to deal with this by taking along a plug in cooler, that I can keep in my room and cut up veggies and have some homemade dip. I'm still debating on bringing my food scale with me, but not sure I will be "brave" enough to use it in that setting. (It is a family camp where you are eating with different people at each meal - and I hate drawing attention in this way)
My other challenging situations would be different parties that we get invited to over the summer. Lots of grilling and yummy salads - which aren't always low calorie.

I have done this before, and it was a good motivation. I am going to put a jar out and for every day that I stay in my calorie range I will put a euro into it. It would be so cool to be able to spend 56 euros on myself by the end of this challenge. And, if I actually did that, I would need to, because my clothes would all be too big!!
