fat tuesday

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Definition: Fat Tuesday is the traditional name for the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is more commonly known as Mardi Gras, which is simply Fat Tuesday in French. It gets its name from the custom, in many Catholic countries, of marking the day with feasting before the fasting season of Lent begins.

This year is the first time I ever heard of "Fat Tuesday" Growing up it was called Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday.

My sister looked it up and said it got it's name from not being able to use fat during lent so households had to use up all the fat they had as they couldn't even have it around for the duration of lent....

Love pancakes but did not have any this year. Trying to cut my carbs

Oatmeal pancakes.. I remember Lent better than Fat Tuesday growing up. Lutheran neighbor introduced me to Shrove Tuesday. Why not? Breakfast for dinner is always yummy!

yep, it's Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, in the UK, Courti, & that started WAY back in the medieval days. In one of my ancestral countries (Scotland) it was oatcakes (love oatmeal, btw- in fact, that's what I had for breakfast today). My mother claims we have Irish in us too, on my mother's mother's side & I've married a man with Welsh in his blood, sooo... there's a lot a pancake tossin' around here!! hahahahaha!!

Yep, feasting today to prepare for tomorrow's fast. I think that Fat Tuesday also denotes that we had to use up the lard before Lent, because we could not use it during that time. At least, that is what I was taught in CCD growing up!
