Tornado Warning

Thursday, April 18, 2013

I live in Joplin, MO. Which means: when a tornado warning is issued at 1:30 in the morning, we through on shoes, get the kids up and throughing on their clothes, and run to my neighbors across the street. My neighbors have a basement (we don't) and they leave the door open for us. We hung out with them in their basement until the storm had passed. Nothing bad happened--just lots of rain, thunder, and lightening. But, my kids were shivering--either from cold, exhaustion, or fear. I stayed calm and tried to distract them, but we live in Joplin.

We will always be cautious of storms, ever since May 22, 2011. We live about 5 blocks north of the damage zone from that tornado. Prior to that date, we talked about sheltering in the bathroom, but we never did. Now, we go to my neighbor's basement. We're all a little tired and I let me kids sleep in (I drove them to school). We're all fine and no tornadoes came from the storm, but I still don't regret waking the kids up. Because I live in Joplin.

I live in Colorado but was raised in the midwest. I can't tell you how strange it is to hear the warning sirens wail & the inexperienced here in Colorado go outside to look at the skies hoping to see a tornado. Crazy. Your response is the right one. RUN with that warning and become as safe as you can be.

I don't care where you live. Tornados are nothing to laugh at. Joplin was an eye opener for everyone that year. We had a small one hit our area a couple of years ago (Kansas City) and 10 years ago one hit our farm . We were more than lucky but will never forget the damage it left behind.

I"m glad your safe and I can also remember a few times when the sirens went off (why is it always at night?) and the kids were allowed to sleep in a bit before going to school.

My daughter now lives in Springfield and I also worry about her having no basement.

I live in Joplin as well. I was only a couple of blocks from the damage also (15th and Pennsylvania) I did the same thing when the alarm went off. I woke up my sons and we waited it out. We were all tired the next day, but I don't regret it either because we live in Joplin. emoticon

Thanks! We were all safe. A tornado did touch down in rural NE Oklahoma. A few houses were destroyed, but no one was hurt.

In 1967 there was a terrible tornado in our neighborhood. Well, not as terrible as Joplin's! Let's hope we won't see another of that size again. We were not living here then, but we heard from the neighbors and teachers how the children at school were so afraid whenever there was a chance of one. The fear stays with you. Take care.
