Mind over Money

For the past two years I have been struggling financially since I lost my full time job. I do get work here and there. Just enough to hold on but it has been a struggle. It has also been a blessing to have family members help me out from time to time.

The reason that I wrote mind over money was my shopping and eating habits. they have gone down quite a bit since I have started Spark. I could easily blame it on finances but the truth is I do not have the motivation to do the things that I need to do. I realize just how blessed I am that I still have shelter and food. That I am blessed to not go hungry. However, while this is the time I should plan the most, I plan the least. Having a plan when shopping not only saves you from bad purchases but saves you money. So why am I not planning as much. Why have I reverted back to fast foods? Why am I choosing the fries after giving them up for 2 years? It is clearly not about the money. The dollar spent on a sausage biscuit can easily be used to buy a container of oatmeal that will last a whole week. The cost of potatoes is cheaper than a few orders of fries. A bag of frozen fish beats a few burgers even if you order from the dollar menu.

I guess it is my motivation. I am sad and while I have not gone back to ice cream, cookies and chips in the middle of the night, I am eating my sadness and disguising it as breakfast or lunch. I can't seem to get myself out of this cycle at the moment. I say that I am going to do things differently but I am stuck in this moment. I know that my bad eating right now is NOT about the "eating healthy is expensive" excuse. I hate that excuse and if I were in a better mood I would challenge anyone with that excuse but I have to pull myself out of this funk before I can.

So, My spark friends, can you lend me a hand? What can I do to get out of this funk? My self pep talks aren't working.

    Ok - I didn't read what everyone else said so I'm not sure it hasn't already been said - one factor in eating out is the social aspect. It gets you out of the house and around other people, whether you talk to anyone or not. Keep that in mind while you try to reign in the eating/spending - there may be some need to be out and about. Maybe walking at the mall will help - it's free and there are others who walk there in the early mornings too, so there is a social aspect.

    Sending Positive Thoughts and Energy your Way. I also went through similar situation as you and finally had that AHA moment last November. You are not alone.
    Exercise always seems to help me and I hope you keep up your walking. Using the Food Tracker and Fitness Tracker are a great tool, even if you don't change anything.
    I am an emotional eater and it seemed like a viscous cycle for awhile but adding one small healthy change gradually gives you a feeling of accomplishment.
    Getting together with a group can also be good. I read a lot from The Secret, Joel Osteen and many more books and try to surround myself with Positive. Keep a journal, I love to write down my feelings. You will learn what triggers your emotional habits. I have seen where people focus on the Positive and write what they are grateful for.     Thanks for posting. This got me thinking. Get excited about what you can do. My motivation always comes back to me if I give myself a challenge. When funds are low in our household, I always go to our food budget and get super creative with meal planning. I grab the sale circular, look at what we already have and get calculating, it's not always easy but it can be kinda fun. I wish you all the best and success !!

    Missygeen, I hope it helps to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I am in the same situation you are financially, and while I am so grateful to have a roof over my head and food to eat, I am embarrassed every time I hand the food stamps card to the grocery store cashier, and I know I am only in a home because of my parents. From my point of view (because this happens to me), the overeating is from STRESS. Also, when you are in a financially bad place, it is easy to have low self esteem, and then you just get to a place where you just don't care about what you are eating anymore. Try to do one positive thing for yourself today, no matter how small. I have found that if I set one small goal and then achieve it, I feel better about myself and don't eat as much. Also, you mentioned you were feeling sad. When I feel that way, it really helps to take a walk for 10 minutes to clear my head and get the "happy hormones" kicking in. I'm here if you need a shoulder! emoticon

    Emotional eating is a challenge for me as well. And since your emotion is also tied to a reduction in income, that makes it more challenging. Perhaps, this is a great time to join a Spark Challenge or a team challenge. Something that will make you more accountable and reinforce all the good things you used to do and still do in terms of eating selection and exercise.

    The important thing is to remember that this is something you want. If you did not want it, you wouldn't ask for help.

    It IS difficult to have to financially worry day-in and day-out. Have to take care of you though. You may not be able to make the absolutely healthiest food choices (since you are relegated to what's on sale and what you can afford) but you CAN make sure it is as healthy as possible. Instead of the white bread, buy full grain. Instead of the sugared cereal, get a less processed cereal or do oatmeal. Things like that do help.

    I find that when I lack the motivation myself, I definitely reach out to others. There are SEVERAL groups within Spark and outside of that are FREE to help you combat this. I have a gym membership and like to get myself to group fitness classes that are included in my membership in order to make new friends and help with my plateaus. Even if these people aren't around for the long-haul, they certainly provide me with some perspective and when I get to know the "regulars" they keep me accountable. You may also see if there are any free meet-up groups for walking in your area of if some of your friends/family will start a walking group with you. places to check for this are 1) your local sporting goods retailer's community board; 2) Sparkpeople city teams; or 3) Meetup.com.

    I think you know what you need to do, you just have to do it! And that is the most difficult part! If I were in your shoes I know I would be stressed out and would be more easily tempted to make bad choices. For me deep breathing and exercise work wonderfully to reduce stress, but you probably have to find what works for you. Then before you buy any food ask yourself if you want to record it. If you keep a nutrition log, that can help you make better choices, since it forces you to look at what you eat.

    Just suggestions! Feel free to ignore or pick and choose! Hopefully something helps you out!
