Make Friends With Your Food

emoticon Dear Friends,

Many people talk to me about food problems and I have lots to say on the subject.

It's not about giving up food and depriving ourselves, it's about learning HOW TO LIVE WITH FOOD!!! How to make friends with food. I have lost 103 pounds and here is what I have learned.

EATING OUT
If I'm going out for a meal I keep everything in moderation. If I really want something then have it and I enjoy myself. I don't beat myself up about it. We all need time off. We all need to enjoy the food we love. If we deprive ourselves long enough we will win the battle but lose the war. Eventually we will binge because we denied ourselves to long.

When I started my journey I too started out depriving myself. My Mom told me that I need to splurge if I wanted to win. I go out to dinner with my Mom every Friday night. I have several rules I go by:
1. I workout heavily the day before if possible.
2. I eat lightly the day of and drink lots of water.
3. I order whatever I want including dessert.
4. I get a to go box before I start eating.
5. I put 1/2 my meal in the to go box (most restaurants serve enough for two meals, we are conditioned to try to eat it all)
6. I share the dessert with my mom.
7. I workout heavily the day after.

Typically I don't go over my calories but when I do, so what. I did this every week the entire two years while I was trying to lose weight. I lost over 103 pounds and I never binged because I learned not to deprive myself.

CRAVING
If I really wanted something I ate it so I would only eat some now, rather than a lot later. I had to analyze myself first. Was I hungry, depressed or hurting. If so it's not a craving. If I'm hungry drink a glass of water and find something healthy to eat. If I'm depressed or hurting then drink a glass of water and take care of my feelings through exercise or doing something fun.

If it's none of the above then I know that it is a craving. It's almost always something I don't normally eat. I have it but I keep it to a minimum. I can't keep ice cream in my home because it is a trigger food. If I'm craving some then I go to the store and pick up a single serving of my favorite flavor.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Whenever possible substitute something bad with something less bad or even better.
- I am a severe choco-holic. I eat chocolate every day in one form or another. I eat dark chocolate attune probiotic bars. They are a small candy like bars and 90 calories. I have Nugo bars chocolate brownie flavor. I have Muscle Milk protein shakes, 20 mg protein and 190 calories. None of these are real chocolate but they satisfy my need for chocolate.
- I substitute quinoa for rice. It's much better for you and you cook it just like rice and I use it in my recipes.
- I eat only whole grain pastas.

Things that you like to eat often, try to find a healthy substitution. Try speaking with an organic grocery store if you are stumped.

I hope anyone reading this will find something helpful in it. It took me quite awhile to learn all this and my hope is that this will save someone in some way.

Live with your food, make friends with your food and control it, don't let food control you.

Love yo all.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID HERE........ WHEN I FIRST DECIDED I WAS GOING TO LOSE ALL THIS WEIGHT I KNEW I HAD TO EAT THINGS THAT I ENJOYED....... PLUS I KNEW IT WAS SOMETHING I HAD TO DO THE REST OF MY LIFE IF I DIDN'T WANT TO REGAIN IT ALL BACK..

I'VE FOUND EATING THINGS YOU LIKE AND BEING ABLE TO LOOK FORWARD TO EACH MEAL HAS KEPT ME GOING........ SURE I HAVE THOSE DAYS THAT I PUT ASIDE FOR A TREAT DAY I CALL THEM..... SO I DON'T DEPRIVE MYSELF FROM ANY FOOD GROUPS....

SO FAR ALL THESE HEALTHY TIPS HAVE WORKED FOR ME........ I'M MAINTAINING FOR OVER A YEAR AND ENJOYING LIVING A HEALTHIER LIFE STYLE.... THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT I HAVE LOVED MY FOOD AND KNOW I CAN AND WILL LIVE LIKE THIS THE REST OF MY LIFE..... WHICH MEANS NEVER GAINING IT BACK.

emoticon emoticon My DH and I eat breakfast out a lot - probably 3-4 times per week. I usually order a ham and cheese omelet made with egg beaters and light on the cheese along with whole wheat toast which I eat plain (no butter etc), homemade salsa, water and coffee. I never go over my goal by eating that breakfast. If I decide I want to splurge I will have Migas I usually order just 1/2 order and also order that made with egg beaters, light on the cheese, refried beans (lots of fiber) and corn tortillas (more fiber), homemade salsa, water and coffee. Even with the Migas I still am able to stay within my calorie range.

I use to be an avid choco-holic but have broken that habit. When in WW we were each given a candy bar to take of our choice. I took my favorite one at that time. I left it laying out in the open for me to see and I had a choice - do I want to eat that for a few minutes of flavor or do I "CHOOSE" to pass it up. I always managed to choose to pass it up. That candy bar laid out in the open for 8 years and I finally threw it away. I never touched it!! But, it was MY CHOICE. Now, when my DH brings out his chocolate candy bars as he does twice a day, I rarely even taste it - - I have found that it's actually too sweet for me!!! Never thought that would happen.

You have given me some other info that I need to try such as using quinoa in recipes in place of other things and the different bars/brownies for my treats - - who knows, maybe those bars will be too sweet for me too. I won't know until I try them I guess.

I would have to agree that too many people think that the carbs will make them fat but it just isn't so. We definitely need those carbs for energy as well as fiber.

Thanks for sharing!! Gee, I didn't mean to write my own blog here but I guess I got carried away!! Thanks again for sharing Pam!!! Great ideas here!!

Wow, how very sensible you are. Great advice and so easy to follow.

We are retired and on average we have lunch out 3 times a week. It's fun, very enjoyable, a nice treat and a social event. Our portion sizes in the UK are never very big but when we recently took some of our grandchildren to the pizza hut,(their choice ): ) I asked for a box to allow the children to take home our entire pizza, our least favourite food of all time. It's the only time I've ever boxed food; usually I just leave on my plate anything I don't want to eat.

I'm so glad to read your advice as so many people on SP write about their absolute dread of going anywhere near parties or restaurants.

Well done on your weight loss. emoticon

Fantastic blog, it really summed up my problem at the moment of depriving myself and then bingeing. I have been doing this for years and putting on more and more weight due to the binges emoticon emoticon

You have really given us the "skinny" on what it takes to lose and maintain weight loss. It's a great statement of a "don't diet" mentality. You do all the little things right and in the long run you achieve what you want. Good blog--and thank you for sharing your success!!!

Very well said! You DO need to relax and allow yourself to eat what you want some times or it is binge city, I am in the process of learning that for myself. I like your pointers I will keep this handy when I am going out to dinner, I love to go out to dinner and we have just a few restaurants in Vegas lol!!!
