In-between

Friday, April 25, 2014

I’m in-between.

I’m not at my highest weight, and I’m not at my lowest weight, just somewhere in-between.

I’m not a teenager, and I’m not an old lady, somewhere in-between although perhaps closer to one end than the other, who knows!

Style-wise, I’m neither Juicy Couture nor Brooks Brothers; probably a lot of options in-between.

Can you tell I went shopping? Yes, after four years of buying mostly running clothing and gear, I’ve decided that my decimated work wardrobe needs to be replenished. I’d even started having nightmares about it. Seriously.

So I headed to Macy’s today, where I knew there would be some petite options. Nothing would do. Oh how I miss the days when Houston had Lord and Taylor, who could always be counted on to have a substantial selection of petite styles. These days, it seems if you are petite you are expected to dress either like a child or like an old lady. I’m neither, I’m in-between.

I was ready to spend more than I usually do if something grabbed me. Nothing did.

I think I need to be pushed outside my comfort zone somehow. So tomorrow I’m having DD take me shopping, because I can count on her advice. She’s neither the oldest nor the youngest, she’s the one in-between.

Had to come look up your blog after your comments on mine. Why does shopping have to be so difficult? Some of my friends on facebook got so fired up after reading my blog about similar issues that they wanted me to write a letter to clothing designers. LOL. It's definitely a frustration we all share no matter our size challenge. Here's to wishing you absurd amounts of luck and good fortune in future shopping trips!

Hi "in-between"! Enjoy your journey! I believe a lot of us are in between! Thank you for sharing this lovely prose! Also my 19 year old daughter believes fashion creates this weird bookend for mature women with some spunk! We will have to create our own style ! I'm not petite, yet...but still have the same problems. I have had some luck with two Canadian brands. Knits by Sympli and more tailored clothes by Joseph Ribkoff (spelling might be off). Cheers!

It is hard to find petite clothes that are age appropriate. Have you tried Ann Taylor?

The shopping used the be wonderful in Houston - I miss that now we no longer go there. Ah the Galleria and Baybrook Mall in the 90's and early 2000's

I can totally relate. The choices in the petite department are awful! I usually end up in the junior department or buying my clothes on-line.

Oh how I wanted to be "petite" - the women in my family were petite, so were my girlfriends and when I started working, so were my fellow female teachers.
To me it seemed all the cute clothes were for 5'1" and under. Those was the real old days, Perhaps now "petite" is defined differently.
Since I'm retired now and 70 is a lot closer than 60, it doesn't matter so much anymore. It also seems like society has grown right past me. Sometimes stuff is even a bit too long.

I am a petite also. I don't like shopping at all.
Hope you find something fantastic while shopping with your daughter.

Love this post and Ohhh...do I know the feeling! I'm having a time of it just finding ONE dress that isn't kiddyish or matronly! Good idea to take another pair of eyes with you, along with an out-of-the-box attitude. We'll want photos, of course ! emoticon

Loved your blog in a sorta in between way to stay on point. Today was a funny day, we never had any food in the usual time slots, it was all on between. Ha-ha.

Check out Eileen Fisher - she usually has petite clothing, and her styles tend to be timeless. Classics with a trendy edge. Mostly neutral colours with a pop of seasonal brights. A little pricey, but well worth it - I've never had any of her stuff fall apart. There are Eileen Fisher stores around, but Nordstrom also carries her line. Or shop online - eileenfisher.com. Check it out. (LOVE her clothes!)

Great blog! I'm also a petite. It is getting harder and harder to find clothes that fit.

I can sympathise - I don't want to look like an old lady or a teenager but there doesn't seem to be anything for ladies who are in-between. Good luck with your search!

The selection of clothes for mature women is horrible this year. Weird and ugly.

I remember that Lord and Taylors -- it was a great store. I still have three cashmere sweaters I bought there at a great price. Gee, this was almost forty years ago.

Dee, it is frustrating. MACY's appeals to the younger ones now. I can never find anything I like from them anymore. BooHoo. I want Marshal Fields back! I still go and check out their sale racks though, since I do love a bargain, and they have plenty.

I shop the specialty stores, and love it when they are in the outlet centers. Ann Taylor, Coldwater Creek, Talbots and Liz Claiborne are my favs. I do not always like what they have from season to season.

It will feel great to have a new wardrobe, and spring is the time to do it.

    Have fun!
