Accountability vs. balance

Thursday, June 26, 2014

I joined both the Biggest Loser summer challenge and the 5% summer challenge because I'm team oriented and the accountability will keep me motivated when/if my own goals get a little fuzzy or when/if I start self sabotaging.

However, when I redid my fitness and weight goals based on losing 5% of my current weight, my calorie range got reduced and I had to commit to some extremely aggressive fitness minutes each week. On Tuesday, when taking an evening walk, I noticed my heart rate seemed high for the exertion I perceived and I know this is a sign of needing a rest. Yesterday, I took a rest day and now I see I have a lot of catching up to do to meet my calorie burn and fitness minute goals.

In my true Type A kind of way, I'm feeling like I can't fall short. But the truth of the matter is: I'm already where I thought I'd be from a size standpoint by mid-July. I need to keep this in mind and not get too driven or impatient. That will become a prescription for failure. Also, I have other priorities and I need to keep everything in balance. I want a happy fulfilling life and the happier I am, the more likely I will be to stay slim and healthy.

Our basic eating and movement routines support our life, not the other way around. emoticon

Balance is so important, I agree! I think living our life in a healthy, happy way is crucial to making this journey enjoyable so we can truly make this a lifestyle change we can live with for the rest of our lives. I haven't figured it out but I'm working on it. Good luck on your journey!

I like to be in the driver's seat for my life, so I understand this completely. It can be hard for me to not meet all expectations all of the time. But life happens, illness happens, etc., and you have to just roll with it. Even if you don't meet your goals, you will have made progress and that's important. In the past, anything that threw a wrench in the plan would have thrown me off my game and made me stop working towards health, and it took a lot of work to get past that. Recognizing your tendency to do this, the need for balance and your achievements is a great step!

Don't let outside restrictions limit you. Listen to your body. Having a rest day can be the best choice.

Balance is one of the hardest things to accomplish for us A types, but you are waaaaaaay ahead of the curve by being able to see it for what it is. Keep up the great work, listen to your body, and be good to your heart. You have done and will continue to do great things just by being true to you.
