You are funny, Homer, but not really...

Sunday, September 21, 2014

Yes, we all chuckle at the absurdity of Homer's parenting. He is a buffoon, and often says just the opposite of what is really needed.

But for someone like me, it's way too close to home to be lighthearted. I have somewhere along the road in life, developed a paralyzing fear of failure that spawned this very belief. it's buried deep in my head, I was barely aware of it. Maybe that's why I laughed so hard the first time I saw this. But after I laughed I realized it wasn't funny. _I_ was Homer Simpson. OMG.

We have all seen those glossy motivational posters that are now a cliche."If you don't take a chance, you don't have a chance, You miss 100% of the shots you don't take", etc. Those are indeed truths, but for those of us with deep seated fears and crippling self-doubt, the primal urge to stay safe overrides these sayings, and we end up not even trying. Most of the time we don't even realize we are doing it. We just automatically say "no" to any invitation out of our comfort zone, and curl up on the couch and binge watch Netflix in our underwear. It's easier.

So... Let's all kick the idiot out of our head and just try! Take the first step, then the second. We will eventually get there. And we can keep in mind that failure is not an enemy to be feared, but an invaluable teacher to help show us the way!
