Some cool people turned 50 this year... Robert Downey jr, Brooke Shields, Viola Davis, Jeremy Piven, Diane Lane and Dr. Dre.
Oh and me. Yep, got my AARP card in the mail the other day. What more could a girl want on a day she hits a half century right?!
Before a recent 5K, my daughter said "Wow, you're gonna be 50, how does that feel?" I broke into my best Sally O'Malley (from Saturday Night Live) impression and said, "I like to kick, and stretch and kick, I'm 50!"
I wasn't upset about the day approaching, it's just a day, just a number. I did have a small moment though, missed my mom, missed my kids being little but it passed and I focused on my health for which I'm thankful.
I thought of my mom at this age and how I am MUCH healthier and MUCH more active than she was. Her declining health the last 14 years of her life is what drives me to stay fit and active. I run 5Ks, I enjoy kickboxing, yoga and bicycle riding. I ride a motorcycle and I love being outdoors.
There are some cool things on this side of 50....
You know yourself
You have a greater appreciation of life
It's easier to laugh at yourself
You know that eating right and exercise are the best medicine
You embrace your imperfections
You have a reason for forgetting things
You can learn to dance
You can learn to sing
No one cares if you're a bad singer
People expect you to be a bad dancer
Your inner confidence shines
You can go home early without offending anyone
You can enjoy being settled in life
AARP discounts are everywhere
You have more time to explore new hobbies
Nap time is fun again
Waking up too early and watching a sunrise
The amazing things you've seen that younger people have not
Your ability to let go
Your ability to forgive others
I told everyone I did not need a big splashy party. I was so happy to come home from work, put on comfy clothes and veg out watching tv. I needed the downtime!!
Yesterday, I went to a local running path intending to check out the new bridge that connects two paths and run my usual 3 miles. As I got close to the three mile mark, I decided to run 50 minutes to celebrate 50 years.
I was out of steam at 38 minutes but I kept running....very slowly.... but I kept going. It felt pretty awesome when I finished that challenge to myself!!
Downtime is great and necessary every now and again but life is all about getting out there and living it no matter your age.
Oh and how bout those Cubs???! This has been a very exciting year! Could the Back to the Future prophecy come true??????? Stay tuned.
