Commitment Day 5K

Friday, January 01, 2016

Today I joined the nationwide Commitment day 5K at Lifetime Fitness Center, sponsored by The Life Time Foundation.

I'm not the new years resolution type (see last blog) but I like their mission to get everyone to commit to investing in their health this weekend.

I very rarely go out on New Years eve, I stay up too late watching all of the party shows so I love to lounge around on New Years Day. A few people in my running group were going so I bought myself a new running jacket and joined them. At race time it was 21 degrees with a wind chill of 6!

I love the neoprene mask I purchased with a groupon....once I let it air out. It smells pretty nasty at first. It really helped keep the wind off of my face which came in very handy at the halfway-point turnaround this morning when we began running against the wind.

The course was a frontage road that wove through industrial office space. Several police officers blocked the small intersections along the way. Some of them were very supportive, shouting at us that we looked great and to keep going.

As I neared the finish line, I felt a little sick to my stomach and a bit worn out but I remembered the theme I picked for the year... FORWARD. "Keep moving forward", I kept telling myself, "the finish line is just up ahead". Then I saw a woman in my running group that had finished and was running back to cheer the rest of us on and I got a bit of a second wind to finish.

Afterward we enjoyed bagels, bananas, hot chocolate and just an all around great feeling of great company.

Now I'm watching the animated Snow White movie from 1950. I liked it when I was young and it was one of daughter's favorites when she was little.

Tomorrow I have am scheduled for a session at Orange Theory Fitness. 79 more days until spring. I want to keep moving forward. Sunday I'll rest!

Definitely in the too chicken to run when it's cold group! Your mask is both functional and kind of reminds me of subzero from mortal combat. :) can't wait for spring !

You make me realize what I wimp I am. If it is colder than 45 degrees, I don't do outdoor exercise. Ok, I live in Georgia and we aren't used to subzero weather! But, at the same time I am RELENTLESS about moving FORWARD like you. I don't let the weather or a little ache stop me from exercising hard. There is an indoor track near me and I can always crank up the music and dance like there is no tomorrow if the weather is not cooperating!!

Chilly run, but an excellent way to start the new year. Forward is a great theme for the year. It can apply to all aspects of your life.

WOW!!! What a great way to start the new year! However, you're braver than I am, because I would not have gone out in that cold to do any kind of walking/jogging/or running. That's just plain too cold to me and I'm used to cold, as I've been in 80 below zero before. I just don't like the cold like that. If the temperatures could stay between 35 and 70 I would be a very happy camper.
