In 1999-2000 or so I was involved in a Star Trek campaign to get a new show made that was based on the adventures of the USS Excelsior. That was between Voyager and Enterprise. The person running this thing was Russ, the head of International Federation of Trekkers. I am not really a hardcore fan. I don't collect stuff and I only went to conventions to promote the Excelsior idea.
About a week and a half ago, I saw Russ and the Excelsior Campaign mentioned in an article about the upcoming new Star Trek series. This prompted me to look Russ up on Facebook and send him a message. He remembered me and said that he was coming to town on Saturday. He'd recently purchased a Sci-Fi collectable shop here and was coming in to run the store while the staff were running the table at the local ComicCon that was going on. I told him that I'd try to stop by to meet him. When we did the Excelsior campaign, everything we did was via email and we never met face-to-face. He asked me to help him out with some computer and network stuff and I did. I ended up spending all afternoon at the shop yesterday. He told me that him and the staff were meeting up for dinner at 7 and invited me to join them.
Flash forward to 7 PM. I'm sitting in the restaurant with one of the staff members and we're waiting on Russ to get there. We see him pull up in front of the doors and pull a wheelchair out of his trunk. I go out to see if he needs help with all this, the doors, etc. In his passenger seat is NICHELLE FREAKING NICHOLS! If you are not a Star Trek fan and don't know who that is, she is the actress who played Uhura.
I about died. So yeah. I had dinner with Nichelle Nichols last night. As my BFF said, "You idiot! Look what you would have missed if you'd offed yourself last week!"
