A Thank You Across Time and Miles

More than a decade ago, there was a person in my life who gave me a gift of which I'm not even sure he was aware. He is a Catholic priest who took time to talk with me when I was "in a bad place". Before going home, I'd stop and chat with him. He was non-judgmental, kind and interesting. We didn't talk about religion, we just talked. I'm not even Catholic. We weren't what's considered traditional friends. We didn't go to dinner or talk on the phone. We just talked for 20 or so minutes before I went home from work. He was reassigned to another place. My life improved. I've thought of him with affection and gratitude over the years. Last week I thought that I should try to find him and tell him how much he'd meant to me. To my absolute delight, the internet coughed him up. Thousands of miles away in a different state. I called the phone number on his church's website, fully expecting to get a church secretary. He answered the phone! We spoke for about fifteen minutes. He remembered me, much to my surprise. Lesson learned - say "thank you", say "you helped me", say whatever is in your heart and don't wait so long!
