My local Senior Center Rocks
Thursday, November 02, 2017
The county in which I live is huge and provides a number of senior centers scattered throughout the county.
When I retired, I joined the one closest to me ($45 annually) and am impressed with its focus on keeping us healthy as we age.
Some of the things we have
-- a daily lunch that is provided free to most; $5 if you're still under 65. I expected to see cheap bread with sugary chips and soda. Instead it's frequently a nutritious soup with whole grain bread and protein.
-- 3 or 4 fitness classes per day tailored to sitting, just standing, walking, weights etc.
-- classes such as a new language, watercoloring, (pay for these)
-- free classes
-- a local AARP Chapter
-- small groups can book a regular room: poker buddies, crocheting for charity, etc
-- free transportation to and from the center for low income
-- planned outings to local theater, museums, boating
