Why fiber is good

I struggle with IBS and found this article interesting. Going to work on getting more natural fiber (not supplements) into my diet.

    My husband and I both suffer from IBS and have found that eating a high fibre diet really helps both of us.

    I average around 40g fibre per day, from a mix of grains / fruits / vegetables, and find that including natural probiotics with most meals (yogurt / sauerkraut / fermented veggies / sourdough) makes a huge difference in managing my symptoms. I really notice the difference if I go too low on fibre for a day or more.

    He averages about the same amount of fibre, but gets some from adding a high-fibre "biscuit" with extra water before lunch and dinner. These "biscuits" include psyllium husk and flaxseed meal, and are just over 5g of fibre each. Adding the extra probiotics make his symptoms worse, but the extra fibre before the bigger meals have made a huge difference for him.

    Good luck with your experiments with fibre, and I hope you'll see as much improvement as we have!
