I will definitely be having open-heart surgery to replace the aortic valve. They repeated what I'd been told at the cardiologist's office -- my heart muscle is in good shape, and so is the electrical system. I'm not sure how to correctly refer to the latter. Still, one of the first things the surgeon said to me is, "You have interesting pictures of your heart." I think they're a bit baffled that the rest of my heart is so good, but just this one problem (as far as they can tell). They've requested a catheterization to make sure I don't need bypasses. However, they don't think I will because the heart muscle is so good and strong. My blood pressure was good that day too. The trans-catheter method is not ideal for me because of my age, and few insurance companies approve it for people unless they're high risk for open-heart surgery. I won't have physical therapy until 4-5 weeks post-surgery, but he wants me up walking around and even riding the recumbent bike as soon as possible. He doesn't want me to lie around and vegetate.

The thought occurred to me the other day that God held this off until I could get the weight off and get more physically fit. He was preparing me for this!

While I am still nervous, I am feeling better about it.

The heart cath and scope are scheduled for April 5th. If they discover the need for stent/bypass, they may just send me on to Columbus for both right away. That's a two-sided coin for me. Would I like to just get this over? Yes! Do I like the idea that I might need bypass and/or stents (somewhat of a complication)? No. Still, I think I'm going to schedule the surgery as soon as I can. The surgeon said I could wait until school is out in May, but I might still be easily fatigued at the beginning of the school year. I don't want to deal with this another school year.

Linda, they said sometimes that does happen, but they don't expect I'll need that since my husband can stay with me for at least one week after I get home from the hospital. Also, I won't have any therapy for the first month in order for the chest to heal. After that, I'll have therapy at an outpatient clinic to strengthen the chest muscles, etc. The surgeon said I'll probably have one appointment per week somewhere. After the first month, I should be able to start driving again. I'll make short trips at first to get used to it and not tire myself out;. The surgeon said he will have me up the first day. I am to walk and ride the recumbent bike several times each day. I don't think he will have to remind me. I'll be chomping at the bit to get back in the swing of things. emoticon I promise I'll be careful though.

You know my prayers are with you - successful surgery and speedy recovery! They definitely will get you up and moving as soon as possible. Hubby said they walked me down the hallway from the recovery room to my bed in the ward (although I am pretty fuzzy about that.) They got me up to walk every day I was in the hospital and in rehab. Just take it slow and listen to everything your doctors tell you. You won't believe the difference.

    Love and hugs!!
