Pruning my apple tree

Saturday, June 09, 2018

Our favorite apple tree began to die starting at the tips of the branches. It has been such a good tree producing huge amounts of apples for us to freeze and eat during the year. We went to the extension office and they told us that the tree had fire blight. The only way to save it is to cut the limbs off 8-12 inches below the dead leaves. The tree was loaded with little apples so this meant that we would loose the majority of our apple crop. As I was mourning needing to do this radical treatment, I remembered that this is how God treats us. We think we are doing well but He can see there are things that are keeping us from being the best we can be for Him. Sometimes He has to "prune" us to get rid of the things that are holding us back from being our best. It does not feel good, in fact it sometimes feels like a punishment. If we just surrender to His wisdom and let Him do what He knows best, we will be delivered from our weakness and will grow into a much better and fruitful person. Our tree looks pretty pitiful right now but I know that with the diseased limbs gone, it will flourish just like we will after God prunes us too.
