senior center

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Back in the fall of 2016, I was starting SP (my second time around) and found the Senior Center close to where I live. Both boys were in high school so I had from 6:30 to 3 to myself. As I was trying to exercise more, I tried some different classes. The only one that I really enjoyed was Laughter Yoga. It is more like playing than exercise but smiling and laughing even if forced has a lot of health benefits. When school was out, I stopped going and once school was back, Harvey had flooded the Center. They finally reopened but I didn't get started back until last week. I was kind of surprised that they remembered me and welcomed me back. I really enjoy the class and plan to continue to go. They also have a jigsaw puzzle at the Center on a table and everyone who wants to works on it while waiting for class or maybe after class. I love jigsaw puzzles so I usually spend extra time at the Center and it is a nice time for some conversations with other puzzle people.

They had a screening test for PAD, Peripheral Artery Disease this week that I signed up for. The test compares your pulse in your finger with that in your toe to see if any blockage might be a cause for concern. Normal is between 1.00 to 1.40. My readings were in the normal range - right foot 1.14 and left foot 1.22. I will need to watch for other tests they might have available in future.

I am checking to see if any other classes I can try as would love to find some more that I enjoy. I did the walking a few times but have not been for several days. One issue is the time as I'm not sure I could make a class before 10 am and several are earlier than that. I might try a 9 am class once Micky (our older dog) is better and I don't need to give him medicines in the morning before our other dog, Pebbles is out. If Pebbles is out, he'll try to eat Micky's food that I have the meds in. I do see one on Friday that I plan to try: Inspiring Movement--therapeutic, gentle, healing, exercise class for all levels.

For those older SP like me, if a Senior Center is available, you might want to check it out. I'm glad I did. Have a great rest of the week everyone.

That's great. My parents love their senior center, but I'm probably old enough to go there, too, or nearly so. Maybe I'll check and see if they have any stuff I'd be interested in.

Good for you Nice to see you are enjoying not only the yoga class but the time chatting with your jigsaw puzzle friends. Always nice making new friends.

I will be moving either the end of Aug. or Sept. I live in New York City. I have lived in this apartment for 48 years, since I was married. It's a 3rd floor walk up which means 6 flights of stairs. Between the COPD and age it's getting harder and harder. Moving to a new building with a elevator.

I will have to look for a senior center in my new neighborhood.

You have a good week too.
