After the half marathon

On Sunday, October 7, 2019, I did something I never thought I would do. I ran for 13.1 miles, almost non-stop, and finished a half-marathon in under 3 hours. I have my medal hanging on my wall at work and I still am in a bit of shock. When I started this journey almost two years ago, I said I would "never be a runner". Once I decided to try, I said I would never run long distances. I told myself a half marathon was just too far. I was so excited when I ran my first 5K, and then I ran more, and then I ran a 10K, and I still said I could never do a half.
Something happened to my brain this summer and I started saying "why not?" I realized that I was at a point with my fitness that if I trained specifically to run that far, I could possibly do it. I looked up training plans and did my best to stick with one, but even the week before the race, I was doubting I could break that under-3-hour goal. When I realized about 9 miles in that I was actually going to do it, I got one of the biggest bursts of adrenaline I have ever felt. When I got to 11 miles and I was still going, and then 12, and then when I saw the finish line... I can't really explain the feeling. I realized that if I could do that, I could do nearly anything with the proper training. It was a crazy weird and amazing feeling.
Now, a week later, my legs have fully recovered and I am enjoying getting back into a more normal workout routine. I am thinking about next year and what my plans are. I did learn that because I teach, planning a big new race after the school year has started makes things a little tricky, so I am looking at big races in August to give me the summer to specifically train. Right now my goal is back to Olympic distance triathlon. I am also looking at trail races and maybe an obstacle course race like a Tough Mudder. I feel like nothing is out of my reach fitness-wise as long as I put my mind to it, and that is something I don't think I have ever felt before. I am excited to keep going!
