Make a Deal With Yourself!

Have a hard time getting going with your exercise routine? Here's a trick I use with myself:

I tell myself that all I have to do is get through the warm-up. If I make it all the way through and still don't feel like exercising, I can quit.

Just pack 'er up and go on with my day.

I've only taken myself up on this offer once, and it turned out that I was getting sick.

The thing is, once I start moving, it doesn't seem so hard or negative anymore. I'm actually in the mood to keep going, or at least can't think of a good enough reason to quit.

So next time you are debating with yourself about whether to get it in gear and exercise or not, try this trick and see how it goes.

And tell me if it worked!

    Great blog, Nancy! I remember not being motivated in the past. I recall giving myself permission to cut it short if I wasn't up to it. So, this does work! Today, many years later, t don't have a problem getting motivated to start. I think being easy on ourselves is always a good idea.

    But it IS time to apply it to strength training. (Does it count that I signed up & paid for a month of kettle bell training?) -- I thought that would continue my jump start that I started in October. Thankfully, my body IS responding positively!

    Yeah, for me it's all about getting out of bed. Once I get up and moving, I keep going. :-)

    This is a great trick! I often use a similar ploy when I am running. I tell myself I can stop running after a mile and be okay with it. I just need to get in that one mile. And of course, I always end up wanting to keep running, so it work for me!
