Eating My Feelings

Recently, I have been reevaluating my plan for living healthy. One issue which stands out is that I routinely use food to deal with my emotions. On a positive note I have learned to recognize this pattern as an indication that some aspect of my life is out of control. Therein lies the challenge Identifying the emotional triggers and taking the necessary steps to resolve the issue, and prevent reaching for the most accessible item . unfortunately, this is often food which has been processed for convenience. This results in a high calorie intake with little or no nutrition. What do you do about those unidentified emotions? The pain which hits for no apparent reason. Whether or not we can identify our emotional hunger,food is not therapy. The attempt to eat away our feelings is never successful. I know this because I have tried, and continue to try to make this work. I eat when I am in pain, I eat when I am angry, I eat when I am anxious or stressed. Not once,in any of the above circumstances does eating get rid of the feelings. It is only working on the issues behind the urge to overeat that the balance between hunger and emotional eating can be attained.

    I do the same.. sometimes I care and well sometimes i don't .. just have to keep trying and hope it gets better

    I find if I keep my hands busy it lessens my using food to soothe.

    I try to have healthy things available when this happens to me and get busy doing something either indoors or outdoors. I know how hard this is. One day at a time.

    Battled this same thing for years. Knowing that food is not the answer was never the answer for me to stop doing it. One thing that helped me was to drop the "diet" mentality and focus on eating healthy most of the time. I pretty much got rid of the unhealthy options in the house. there are all sorts of tips for getting past this and there are very good articles here. If you can delay for even 5 minutes and do something like stretch or medicate or take a walk around the block the feeling may pass. Don't mean you won't still be angry, hurt or anxious, but you may delay the desire to eat to alleviate the emotion.

    Over time I found that eating well and moving more has helped me to manage the emotional eating. It ain't easy, but it is working.

    I have those same feeling and I had lost a great deal of weight last year. This spring it all started to fall apart and I realized how easy those bad habits came back. I try to never having tempting food in my home. I have grapes, clemintines, and other fruit and celery to grab but sometimes, before I even think I have eaten off my menu. But, I am NEVER going back to 200 and over. It is a job and is not easy but that is my goal. I also have diabetes so my glucose numbers are important.

    Keep working on it never give up expecially after a bad day. Better days will come.
