Have you ever had stone soup? When you didn't believe you had anything to give, and just one person, one idea, one something from the natural world turned your thinking around, and you started to believe again, then, you've received nourishment from stone soup.
Last night, I heard this story from the perspective of a "beggar" who showed up in a synagogue, expecting to be fed; the beggar said that s/he could produce a miracle. As it turned out, it was the miracle of a community coming together that brought diversity, abundance, and shared resources to feed, entertain, and support one another. The "beggar" stayed for several weeks with families now more willing to share, to be of service.
Does it take a crisis of someone, a situation of great need, to bring out the spirit of lights, our willingness to give of our substance, our care, our attention, our time?
Welcome to the Season of Lights, 2018.
