This was such an unusual Independence day, with all the social discourse and the pandemic. this didn't seem like a holiday. Far from it. In the St. Louis area, we had what was called Fair St. Louis, which was a three day fair, with rides, and foods and drink booths, and air shows and performances every day by popular stars. one day would be pop, one day would be country, and one would be rap or soul, appealing to a different genre and people each day. The shows alone would draw thousands for the free 2 hour concerts. The air shows had a following as well and each nigh ended with a world famous 30 minute fireworks show. This year none of that. They had a virtual fair for 90 minutes on Facebook, but it wasn't the same. We went to church and after, listened to everyone's fireworks. Since we are so dry out here, we heard the fire dept. going out many times last night. But little to do with Independence day. How I really wished that people would realize what freedoms we have in this country and use it for good instead of the selfish way they use them today. We ended Mass with America the Beautiful last night and I had many come up to me after Mass and tell me how well I sang that song. There so much deepness to this song, and I get emotional each time I sing it. I only wish everyone did! Hope you had a great holiday.

We actually had nothing here either for the 4th. It was quiet until WWIII started in our neighborhood. I am in a suburb west of Detroit, and you would think people bought out the firework stores. I wish our State would make it illegal for fireworks, just to dangerous in a crowded city. These fireworks that went off are for out in the country or over water. I just don't get people anymore.

Makes me wonder what this world is coming to.

Glad to see a blog from you. Sorry this is so late, but I didn't get this. Must of missed is somehow.

It was good to read your blog. I wish I could get to Mass but the church is to far away, and I walk everywhere!

I have always liked America the Beautiful, and did support making it our country's anthem. Why do some people have to think so differently, we are all Americans no matter what the color. We are back to where we were, fighting Brother against Brother, for something that will never be corrected. They say History repeats itself, and that is exactly what is happening.

An excellent article in my local paper on Katherine Lee Bates who wrote the poem / words to America the Beautiful. Interestingly she revised those words at least once..."And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea". Thy GOOD. An explicit choice I would say...so we must remember not to confuse greatness with goodness.

Today our goodness is very much in question...as it was when she revised it 1905. Read her story...very enlightening. Time has advanced, yet very little has changed.

I agree with you Bob. I just stayed home with Rascal and Molly (dogs) and listened to the neighbors shooting fireworks. They did not enjoy them at all.

Neighbors shot off fireworks. They stopped relatively early so that was good.

I would have liked to have seen some social distancing - especially since we've been seeing spikes.

“And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.” What an appropriate ending for Mass, and exactly what we need to to bring us together instead of dividing. There isn’t any us and them; it’s all us in God’s eyes.
