Should have said 6 PM

Wednesday, July 08, 2020

Someone suggested playing pickleball at 4 PM. There was a 20% chance of isolated thunderstorms through the afternoon. What time do you think a brief but intense thunderstorm hit the area where we play pickleball? Yep, dead set around 4 PM. When I left home, it hadn't started raining, and that was 3:45. It did so by the time I got to the highway, and a mile later, it was pouring. One other person ended up on my optimistic wavelength, and was out there at the park, but the courts were soaked, and it was still raining, then sprinkling. After talking through car windows for about ten minutes, we gave it up as a lost cause and went home.

But now it's 5:30 and the rain has stopped entirely, and the radar is clean, and if you look in the right directions, there's brilliant blue sky out there to be seen. The courts really don't dry off quickly at all, but perhaps if we'd called for a 6 PM start, we might have been able to have some semblance of a game.

But it is not to be, and we'll try again tomorrow, when there's a 30 percent chance of rain after 2 PM. The odds beat us today, but may they ever be in our favor on Thursday afternoon.

I live in Alabama. We got a LOT of pop-up rain - from sprinkles to someone overturned the tub. It never fails; when I plan something, that's when it rains.
