Four Weddings &a Funeral

Wednesday, July 08, 2020

Four Weddings and a Funeral strolled up the wedding aisles onto the movie screens in 1994. It’s a wonderful British comedy starring Hugh Grant as Charles. He & his group meet @ 4 weddings ... & a funeral, as disclosed in the title. The story starts with Charles & his flat mate Scarlett, waking up late to a wedding. Charles is the best man. They make it in time, but by the skin of their teeth. He forgot the rings, so the couple got married with skull ring & a jelly heart ring. Oh, well, the church was lovely. Charles sees an American woman, Carrie (Andie MacDowell). They have a one night stand, she leaves to go back to the States.

The Three months later, another wedding (with the new priest butchering their names). Charles is seated @ the reception with several of his exes. Afterward, he meets Carrie again, she’s friendly, he takes his friends’ drinks to them, comes bouncing back to her - she introduces him to her fiancé Hamish. Oops. Later that evening, Charles sees Carrie again. He had thought he’d seen her & Hamish leave, but she was just taking him to a cab to go back to Scotland. Another hookup, & goodbye. Some time later, Charles gets an invitation to Carrie & Hamish’s wedding, including a wedding registry list, @ a hideously expensive shop.

(Scarlett)

Charles meets Carrie coming into the shop. She takes him to help pick out her wedding dress (I think she deliberately picked the weirdest ones). Afterward, he rushes over to find his deaf brother, David, & she comes along. David uses sign language (& reads lips) to speak to Charles, some of it inappropriate, but Charles interprets for Carrie. When she left, Charles runs after her, quoting David Cassidy, “I think I love you!.

The next wedding is Hamish & Carrie in Scotland. One of the gang, Gareth, is also a Scotsman, happily living with Matthew. Gareth is a heavyset, boisterous happy person. He tells the gang of boys & girls to go, find someone, get married. Fiona tells Charles she’s loved him for years (no pressure). Gareth has a heart attack @ the wedding. Mathew didn’t notice, as the reception hall (in a castle) was crowded. He’s devastated. The gang gathers for the funeral in England. (Matthew’s eulogy makes my eyes well up).

Next wedding up - Charles & “Hen” (Henrietta) an old girlfriend. His friends set a bazillion alarm clocks to het him to the church on time! Turns out the also set the clocks a couple of hours early. As he’s waiting, Carrie talks to him. She’s divorced Hamish. Bad timing she says. She leaves. Charles hangs around in the rectory, cursing (apologizes to the man in the sky). As Hen & Charles are standing in front of the church, the priest asks the standard question “is there any reason they should not be married?” David pops up, has Charles translate. He loves another
woman ...

Hen roundhouse punches him & rushes out. The gang go to one of their’s flats, talking it over. Carrie comes to the door in the pouring rain. They chat. Charles asks her to Not marry him & to live with him forever - she agrees. Credits roll, with closing scenes letting us know: Carrie & Charles are together & have a baby.Scarlett is married an American she met @ the Scottish wedding. Tom, the affable & apparently richest, married a distant cousin that came to the wedding for Charles & Hen’s never was. Hen appears married (to Prince Charles?) Fi is married to a British military man.Mathew seems to with another man. David is married to a young woman who took the time to learn sign. yay!
