Luna Moth

Friday, August 14, 2020

This morning I was outside on my patio and I happen to notice this strange moth. It wasn't like any moth I had seen before so I took a picture and looked it up to see what kind it was. It turned out to be a Luna Moth. Although Luna Moth's are not rare, this is my first time seeing one. The reason that you don't see them often is due to their very brief (7-10 day) adult lives and nocturnal flying time. Luna Moths are actually giant silk moths, the adults do not eat, so they are never seen visiting flowers. Luna moths represent rebirth, renewal of body and spirit, regeneration and may even symbolize the soul itself. An interesting fact about Luna Moths is that the adult Luna moths have no mouth parts and do not feed. They survive on stored fat from the larval stage. Their sole purpose is to reproduce, and they die after about a week. So this one is probably dead.
