Fresh air! Hikes!

Monday, September 21, 2020

After more than a week of hazardous air quality here in Oregon, caused by massive wildfires, We had a bit of rain. It did not extinguish the fire is, but the size was greatly reduced. And I am overjoyed to have better air quality! Breathing good air is essential to our health. The extensive exposure to smoke triggered my asthma, but I was able to hike this weekend. And I am overjoyed to get outdoors!

I hiked along the Deschutes River at Riley Ranch Nature Preserve. So beautiful!

And yesterday I hiked the nature trails at Lava Lands. Lava lands is part of the Newberry crater national monument. I’ve lived in this area for over 25 years, and I didn’t realize how large the caldera and volcano are. The volcano covers about 1200 square miles ( about the size of Rhode Island).

Lava Lands a strange and rocky landscape. During the 1960s, the astronauts tested out their space suits on the rocky terrain here.

I was interested in the weathered remains of trees that had tried to survive among the lava rock.

One tree was hanging on and surviving.

I also enjoyed the trail through the Ponderosa pines.

And the view of the lava flow, from the edge of the forest.

It lifted my spirits to hike again. And we got some great help in fighting the fires: Canada sent 3000 firefighters to help fight the fires. They will make a huge difference! Thank you, Canada!

I was so glad to read that you are hiking again and that the air quality is so much better. I know how much it means to you to be able to get out in the fresh air and hike the trails.

We saw Mount St. Helen shortly after it blew and it looked like the pictures taken of Mars. Not a living thing in sight. About 2 years later we came back and it was unbelievable how the plants were emerging and even flowers were among the bushes and little trees. Nature is a miracle.
