The NFL offered players an option to opt out of its upcoming COVID-19 season with stipends ranging from $150,000 to $350,000.

A lot of players took that option, many citing family health concerns.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has a seven-months pregnant wife at home. He did not take that option.

He told reporters from practice on Friday that the decision was her call. And she insisted that he play.

Lawrence considered opting out but reported to team headquarters for COVID-19 testing in late July amid speculation that the two-time Pro Bowler wouldn’t play.

He’s now joining his Cowboys teammates in a makeshift “bubble” in Frisco, Texas as practice gets underway. The Cowboys normally travel to Oxnard, California for camp but are preparing for the season in the Texas heat this summer because of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Even though they’re close to home, that means players are mostly isolating from the outside world as they live in The Omni hotel next to team headquarters. That also means Lawrence’s wife Sasha is handling things at home with their children.

Lawrence is approaching the second year of a five-year, $105 million contract that owes him $16.9 million in salary this season. That’s considerably more than the $150,000 stipend he would have likely qualified for and significant motivation to play.

Like the rest of his NFL colleagues, he’ll do his best to stay healthy this season and hope to be able to join Sasha in the delivery room in October.

PLAYERS OPT OUT OF 2020 SEASON!

Under the amended collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and NFL Players Association, agreed to on July 24, players have the choice to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If a player wishes to opt out, he must provide his club with written notification within seven days of the date that the NFL and NFLPA finalize the agreement that includes the terms of such opt-outs.

To be designated a voluntary opt-out, a player must be under contract or subject to a tender. The player's contract will toll and all provisions of that contract for the tolled year will be applicable the following season; however, he will not receive an accrued season. The player will be eligible for a stipend of $150,000 to be treated as a salary advance against his tolled contract; an undrafted free agent, however, is not eligible for the stipend.

To be designated a higher-risk opt-out, a player must have a diagnosis reflected in their medical records of at least one of the following factors, which are based upon a modified list of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) risk factors list: cancer; chronic kidney disease; COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease); immunocompromised state from solid organ transplant; serious heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies; sickle cell disease; type 2 diabetes mellitus; asthma; cerebrovascular disease; cystic fibrosis; hypertension or high blood pressure; immunocompromised state from blood or bone marrow transplant, immune deficiencies, HIV, use of corticosteroids, or use of other immune weakening medicines; neurologic conditions, such as dementia; liver disease; or pulmonary fibrosis.

It is not mandatory for a "higher risk" player to opt out. A higher-risk opt-out will receive an accrued season toward free agency and all benefits and minimum salary credit for a credited season and is also eligible for a stipend of $350,000, which will not constitute a salary advance.

NFL players who attend 'high-risk' events and contract coronavirus face team discipline, lack of pay
NFL players who contract the coronavirus through "high-risk" activity away from team facilities can face team discipline and might be at risk of not being paid, according to the league's new protocol.

A memo sent by the NFLPA to agents this weekend, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, outlines several rules governing player contracts, opt-out provisions and the contractual consequences of a canceled season.

The memo says that the final language of Friday's agreement between the league and the players will appear in a side letter that is still being negotiated and that the information distributed this weekend represents "a summary of major aspects of the COVID amendments." The basics have been dealt with, and the final section of the memo is devoted to the fact that players will be held responsible for the way they circulate in public while the coronavirus remains present.

Players were told weeks ago on a conference call with NFLPA leadership that they could face discipline, including fines, for conduct detrimental to the team if they are found to have contracted COVID-19 through reckless activity away from the facility. This weekend's memo reinforces that and says that such activity could allow a team to challenge the status of a COVID-19 diagnosis as a football injury.

If such a challenge were to succeed, presumably the team could place the player on the non-football injury list, a move that would allow the team the option of not paying him.

The memo also states: "Clubs/NFL can challenge designation as a football related injury if it can prove that the player contracted COVID-19 through engaging in high risk conduct below. (This issue remains open.)"

"Players are going to have to be careful outside the building," Los Angeles Rams tackle Andrew Whitworth said last week on a conference call after disclosing that he and his entire family got the virus after one of them went to lunch with a friend. "All it takes is one exposure, and it can spread like wildfire."

ABC News' Will Gretzky and Clark Bentson contributed to this report.

Coronavirus updates: NFL players who contract coronavirus could face team discipline, docked pay originally appeared on abcnews.go.com

The governor mandated wearing masks as of 6 pm yesterday. However, it is also the option of individual governments (i.e. the major) to allow public gatherings and to choose whether or not "violators" will be prosecuted and/or fined. Here's the rub: if people would READ the boxes these masks come in, it clearly states that it will NOT protect against COVID-19! YET....YET....everyone is still believing it's THE ANSWER. Bunch of sheeple.

so far so good...... I'm still managing to self-isolate here in south central Pennsylvania... they are slowing reopening everything here but not 100%. Restaurants can serve patrons at outside dining, drive-up, or take out / delivery only. No hair salons, dog grooming, barber shops, nail salons etc are allowed to be open. However, I have a mobile dog groomer and he has continued to groom for his regular clients.

I'm still thankful for home delivery!

Well Pennsylvania has for the most part gone to "yellow" stage which isn't a lot different from the "red" stage.... LOL but everyone was sure in an uproar that our county hadn't gone to yellow yet!

I'm staying put..... can't wait to see the numbers in about 30 days

It's hard times because people make it that way. Thank God we're not forced to wear masks here.

Update... so the Gov of Pennsylvania has shut down my county and he has announced for anyone in Pennsylvania if you go some place you wear a mask. Now everyone is in a panic to find masks to wear. I was fortunate that due to my health issues I already had a supply of masks and I also sew so I've been making some for others..... a Nurse in California that was forced to rewash her only mask that she had so I made masks for her..... An Emergency Veterinary Hospital here that I know the lady that owns and operates is out of masks so I'm making masks for their staff. My family especially my 85 year old parents and 66 year old sister.... hard times for sure

Please, please, PLEASE go to the links I sent previously. People are listening to the media, who MAY mean well, but don't have the best track record for being totally transparent. I urge you, though you DO need to be careful, do not let the media-driven fear control you. Caution with reason is the best course, and to understand that, I urge you again to go to the links. After all, if you're willing to listen to the doomsday idiots, give calm reasoning a try.

As for what is going on in your county, it's the same here, only because I'm a substitute teacher, I've lost a lot of work and no chance for compensatory pay with the school closures. It's maddening as I am one of those that have fallen through the cracks. The food stamp people seem to think that $1,400 a month is too much money to live on and my son and I together only need $16 in food each month. emoticon

I understand about health issues - at 66, I've experienced a number of them. I just have to trust in the Lord to see me through and not get crazy mad at these idiots that believe everything on social and mainstream media. I wish I could afford Youngevity from Dr. Glidden. They work and are a lot more effective than anything GNC can sell but it's not possible at this time; however, when I was able to get them in the past, it was amazing how much better I felt - and man! can I tell a difference now that I can't take them. It's unbelievable.

Anyway, please check out the links. You'll see other links to the side that might also interest you, or you can always type in Dr. Glidden on YouTube and look around the website. I think you'll be surprised and it would definitely be worth your while.

Well they closed our schools...... and there was a run on the groceries stores and you can't find toilet paper any where in town. There is talk of closing non-essential businesses...... and you can only keep a restaurant open if you are serving drive-up, take-out or delivery meals NO sitting to dine in the restaurant. they are asking churches to stop services. No groups of more than 50 people.

They are ready to close the state stores that sell liquor.

In my county so far they have no confirmed cases...

I'm still worried. I'm 63 with health issues..... ugh!

Your thoughts??? If it's spreading would you still want to go to a sporting event?

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — As U.S. sports leagues weigh whether to bar fans from ballparks and stadiums to help stall the coronavirus outbreak.

The global virus outbreak has caused concern about cramming tens of thousands of fans in for games that technically can go on without them.

With the situation evolving quickly, athletes in the U.S. are becoming aware — and concerned — about the possibility of playing behind closed doors.

If virus-related lockouts prove necessary, it's hard to see them being so isolated. If the spread slows, the sports schedule likely will go on as planned. If not, millions of ticket holders might be forced to stay away in cities all over the country.
