What a wonderful Conference! It is always interesting to see what direction we will head with a new prophet. I know many of these things are in planning stages for a long time and "test wards" and stakes are used to see how new programs work.

I loved the Solemn Assembly. I don't remember having one for a long time but I worked most conferences and may have missed out on that part of conference. I also loved that the Relief Society sisters were asked to vote before the Aaronic Priesthood.

I'm excited to see the changes in the visiting and home teaching and how it affects the spiritual growth of my family and my ward. It will be wonderful if it is practiced as it is planned.

I'm also excited to see a new temple in Layton Utah. I live between the Layton temple wherever it will be and the Bountiful Temple. It will be much easier to go to one that is on more level ground, especially in the winter. I remember when the Ogden Temple was announced.. I skipped school to go to the groundbreaking and I remember the open house tours. When the Bountiful Temple opened, I was able to help with the Open House on three different occasions. It was wonderful to have that opportunity. I doubt I'll have the same opportunities but am grateful some of my grandchildren may have the opportunity to serve and remember the experience.

Another Temple I'm hoping will be in my Sister in Law's home city in Russia. It may help her want to investigate the church. My brother left the church and she was never given the opportunity to learn.

We certainly had fun discussing the conference talks and the new apostles as well as the changes in the structure.

How do you feel? What changes are you excited to embrace? How did conference affect you personally? How are you going to incorporate the things you learned in your family and your own life?

My son put some home movies on You Tube. They are from my childhood when I was two and three. It was fun because these are home movies of people who have gone out of my life. My great grandmother who was born in 1873 is on there. My grandparents who were born in 1900 are there.

My aunts, uncles, cousins, who are gone are alive and happy on these movies as are my brothers and parents. It is fun for the grandchildren to see these people as living, moving people. I think they see them more alive now than they did before.

Now to find a way to share with other relatives. They might enjoy the film as well.

Having some family drama. It is pretty nasty and hopefully will settle by the end of the month, but that is very optimistic so I'll just have to hunker down and live with it.

Hope school is going well.

Did you find any more on your ancestor?

It sounds like you are on the right track. The family stories are usually at least partially true. Adopted children were usually related to the family they lived with. Either a brother or child of a sibling. Times were hard and people usually didn't adopt children they weren't related to. If you can find him elsewhere it is possible.

I have looked for my Civil War ancestors on this site www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sa
il
ors-database.htm
with some pretty good success. If you know which unit he fought in, there are pension records and other records that are available.

Can you find him in the previous census?

When you can trace him to the family and find him as he dies, the death certificates will often have his parents names as do marriage certificates. Ohio was fairly civilized and kept pretty good records.

The DNA hasn't given me any links farther back, but I've found cousins. Some have answers to family questions. I am working on it.

I found a receipt for Blacksmith work during the civil war and a draft card. There was also an immigration card. However a census said that he was born in Ohio. I will have to find more information connecting him to the family. But, it is a step in the right direction. I am excited to have someplace to go.

I haven't done the DNA thing. I did talk with my cousin about helping me. She reminded me about the adopted grandfather. But, there doesn't seem to be any paperwork on that. The only thing is that in the census record he is at home at 25 and the next brother is 13. That is a bit strange. I believe the 13 year old was a junior. But, that is not really enough to prove adoption. so I still have lots or stuff to do.

That's very cool. It was surprising how much I found when I started. It was as though the windows had been opened. There was a lot to discover even though my aunts and my grandmother had done a ton of research. On my mom's side, they were pioneers so I thought I'd be stuck at the ocean but I've been able to go back on that line as well.

I did the DNA and have found others from the family who share DNA so it has been nice. We haven't shared a lot of information but it is fun. Most of the family has less information than I have.

I have an uncle who paid a genealogist to do research. I think she made some big mistakes on my Mom's line so I've not added her information. It just doesn't make sense.

I'm excited to find out what you learn about your great great grandfather. It should put him born about the time of the Civil War?

I am taking two family history classes this term. They take some work and I am really just beginning family history work. I am learning, I know I will make mistakes. I may have found my great great grandfather. I am not sure yet. But, that would be wonderful.

I've been busy with the grands. Had 7 here Monday, 9 Tuesday and 2 Wednesday. Had yesterday off and didn't get enough done and again today had two more. I've not seen two of them this week but may see them tomorrow.

My son in law put up trim for my back splash today. I have never had one in this house and when I remodeled, I swore I'd do it. Three years later, it is getting done. Now all that is needed is some painting of some trim and the outlets fixed. They have been loose and open for three years. Way too long.

Tomorrow, I've got to get to the store. Been out of milk and things since Monday. That's a record of sorts for me. I've got to get dinner ready for Sunday as well. I think it won't be a big group, but it will be enough.

I've wanted to sew or scan those pictures all week. It isn't going to get done this week.

How has your busy been?

Interesting idea. I'll have to put that one out to the family. It would be easier to do it that way, but I'll probably send the photos to my aunts who are in their 80's and 90's for them to see what they can. The other side is a different matter.

The truly sad thing is that my mother knew who these people were and she didn't share the photos with us and we have no idea who they are. She wrote on the backs of some of the photos but not all of them. It would have been much easier if she had shared them when there were more people who knew the folks in the photos.

I put them on a cooling rack in the oven at 200. I warmed them about 20 minutes. A toaster works as well. I made about half earlier then I made half right before we ate. I found a recipe on Taste of Home that involved cornstarch and tonic water which apparently makes them crisper.

The ones i heated that we didn't eat are now tough so they don't save well, but they did well for dinner. I made enough for about 20 people.

I served oranges and grapes with the meal for the fruit. I also had bacon and sausage, but it was fast day and the kids were starving.

I got some family photos from my sister. She took them when my mom died and they aren't all together any more. She was going to digitize them so everyone had a copy. That didn't happen so I'll do that. I found photos of my father I didn't know existed. I also found photos of my grandfather who died when my father was 7. It was fun to see the grandparents as younger people, my great and great great grandparents in candid shots or even some formal shots I hadn't seen.

I was excited to find a couple of shots of my grandfather as a young man.

Have a great day.

I live in a small town. So we don't rotate. I didn't rotate in my last ward either. It has been about 20 years. I remember it being really difficult when my boys were young.

How do you heat up the waffles? I feed seminary and that would be good to know if it would work out well. I don't want to give them ego.

Not much work this month. Last year I worked most days this year not so much. But, it will be fine I guess.

Hope all is going well with everyone.

Attended a wedding shower for my mother's youngest grandson (except for the one that was born two years ago.) His bride is cute and I got to meet my other nephew's girlfriend.

My sister gave me family photos that I wanted to copy. It is nice and I can send a copy to my aunts to confirm some of the identities. It was fun to see aunts and uncles when they were young.

Got to get dinner ready. My kids like to eat breakfast on Fast day so I'm pre cooking the waffles and things so we just have to heat it up tomorrow.

Changing church to the "early block" tomorrow. The disadvantage of sharing a building with 3-4 wards as we do here. I'll be done by noon but some kids have a late block so they will be done by 4. We eat at 5. I have fresh fruit to round out the meal so at least it will be healthier.

Have a good day.

Today was a very strange day. I sub'd at the High School. One kid that used to not like me told me he was glad I was there. He doesn't like the person I sub'd for. I will take the small victories. Another kid ignored his work but did not make trouble. I got done early. I need to go and get some things done.

I am advocating for mindful eating for the group. The no sugar is just for me. emoticon It is just not good for me. But, I love it so I eat it. I want to stop so my A1c will be good. Just be mindful.

On a related note if I eat the sweets and realize that they are not the most wonderful food imaginable I want to just stop eating it. You know the difference between kid junk chocolate and a really good chocolate or desert. I really only want the best.

I'm creeping back down with the Mindfulness. It helps me think about whether or not I NEED the food or if I want it. Some days I want it and that succeeds but since there are no bad foods or forbidden things, I'm not going to beat myself up right now.

Pam, I'm not going to be good at giving up sugar at this point but can certainly do some things to diminish my consumption of it.

Have a great day.

Mine is to get back to Mindful eating where I listen to my body and do a check before eating. Snacking is OK but is necessary to be hungry to eat. I'm also focusing more on vegetables and fruits and less white bread and grains in general. I eat meat but tend to eat it only a couple of times a week. I've backed off dairy as well.

I struggle when I've put foods off limits but I do feel better when I stay on a mainly vegetarian diet.

Life gets in the way of things we 'want" to do a lot of the time. I guess it is part of the time of life we are currently in. There is a season and this is one where you are trying to keep a lot of balls in the air.

There will be times that all the balls won't juggle well and giving some of them a rest happens.

Congrats on your youngest turning twelve. I remember when he was a preschooler. How quickly time flies.

Hey everyone, I am sorry I dropped the ball with challenges and keeping up with the team. I am working and going to school plus teaching seminary in my home. I just got a bit overwhelmed and forgot to log in.

I am enjoying my vacation. Today is my youngest birthday. He is 12 and will be ordained a deacon on Dec. 31.

I applied for a permanent job instead of being a sub. I have mixed emotions about getting it but, it should be good in the end. I just hate rejection.

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. I will try to be around more.

Hi. It's hard to believe that now October is almost over. Yes, we are blessed with General Authorities that are such good men, so inspired and uplifting. Our Women in the General Auxiliary Presidencies too.

Conference this year was so good. I'm glad I was able to enjoy the sessions. There have been whole years that I have not heard one session and I was fine. It is what it is, but I had missed all the words of wisdom and the spiritual food that I could have enjoyed.

It is so nice to be able to share the words of wisdom with my kids and grandkids.

I hope you all got to at least hear some of the sessions. If not, it is so nice to be able to listen at another time with the available talks online through the Church websites and some other ones.

Have a great day.

It's interesting how many changes our lives take from time to time. I'm sure you will enjoy the memories when it is over, but I'm sure you don't enjoy as much as you'd like now.

Today was the first day of school. I already have two jobs this week. I wasn't expecting any. Off to get things ready for seminary.

Oh, September, why did you have to come so soon. I am not ready for seminary, to finish my class for summer or to start seminary on Wednesday. So here goes another week. Please participate in the challenge and give some input into ideas for October. Hang on 'cuz life is moving fast.

I had contact with a nephew who is somewhat estranged from the family. I have had strong feelings that there is something that we need to do for/with him and his family.

I had ordered a DNA kit from one of the organizations that do it for genealogy. It will follow the male line back and give information about people who might be related on the father's line. He and a nephew are the only ones who are from my grandfather's family who are surviving. I asked him if he would do the test.

I fully expected that he would refuse. I'm happy to say that he didn't. He is still willing to have contact with me. I'm glad.

I don't know all the things I'm supposed to do for him. I know he isn't a member of the church but has contact with his mother's family who are very active. Right now, I am the oldest surviving member of my grandfather's family so I feel a responsibility to find more information about them and to pass it on to my children.

This is one of those things. Perhaps the others will come with time. I'm hopeful.

I'm glad you got to attend the service. I think that graveside services are becoming more and more popular. I am not a fan of prolonged funerals.

I'm glad you were able to say goodbye to this man who was such a help during that dark time in your life.

I hope you had a good visit.

My dad's cousin died last Friday. Yesterday I drove my dad and my brother to the funeral. We drove for about three and a half hours, each way.

The funeral was a pretty short graveside service. This cousin was a very big help to my dad when my mom died. We were moving and we lived with him. I think he even bought a bunk bed for me to share a room with his daughter. I had a full cast so she got the top bunk even though I am older. I am 50. Yesterday we were talking about age. I had to pipe in that I am still older. Aren't cousins fun?

Well back to stuff.

Welcome Faith-2-hope, I hope you like it here. Please comment on whatever threads peek your interest.

Hey, everyone, I am sorry that I have been a bit MIA. My son got married on Tuesday. His reception is Friday and I am still working on school plus I have a few minute talk at Relief Society tonight and a Family Dinner for extended family on Sunday. I am so grateful for Walking Grandma's help with the group.

WG- your post was very encouraging. It is true we are not alone here on earth. It feels like it sometimes but, when we look back we can realize that we are not alone.

Thank you everyone for your very warm welcome! I appreciate each of you.

WG: Your message here was filled with truth and honesty. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Your assurance that we are never alone that you shared really touched me. I really needed to hear ( and feel ) that at this time. Again, thank you for sharing.

Welcome Faith-2-hope. It is nice to have you here. Please drop by and share your experiences and you successes and your struggles.

I was reminded today of the struggles I had as a newly single mother. I was terrified of my ex husband and my children were struggling with the pain of parents who didn't like each other. I had to take care of money and pay bills for the first time in my adult life. For years I have been the one responsible for my family alone and by myself.

Sitting in church one day, I was feeling sorry for myself. My ex husband was remarried and wanted to be sealed to his wife. He was serving in the bishopric and by all appearances was "past" his previous indiscretions.

I was reminded very strongly by the Spirit that I had never been alone and was reminded in a clear and gentle chastisement that I had support in very specific ways during the hardest times in my life. Several incidents were brought to my mind and heart and I knew that I was not forgotten but was very loved. I was also reminded that it was MY relationship with my Father that was important and not anything else.

I'm not alone in my journey to be healthy either. I have not only others who are along the same road but a companion who has stood beside me in my darkest hours.

It is my understanding that they will continue to register boys who want to be involved in scouting. But, I am unsure. I was 11 year old scout leader when 2 of my boys needed to get their projects approved. If you aim an 11 year old towards eagle they are more likely to get it. I said to the District Eagle Chair "I would like to see a board of review, but not my son and not my 11 year old. " He called me up a short time later and invited me to be in a Board of Review. I have done them since then. The boys was not known to me but he is LDS. It was a good experience. The only thing was another board member asked him if he planned to go on a mission. The man is not LDS. He said that he was not because his job is in fast food and he did not think that he could save up fast enough. After the interview was over, I said that I would like to encourage him to pray about that and that I know that the Lord will help. Even if he has to go late. (Two of my sons left let to earn more money and deal with medical.) The district chair said "OH I think you should go you would make a great missionary and I am not even LDS." It was awesome. His older brother is getting married an hour before my son in the temple. It was a good night.

I'm glad to hear that he got his Eagle. My youngest son just finished his project a week ago today, and it was a beast. The project was the only thing he had left to finish for over two years now--I'm glad he finished it now because from what I can tell most people aren't sure what will be happening with the church dropping scouting for the older boys. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

The boy made Eagle. I thought it was going to be difficult because he said his ward wasn't very friendly and he did not like how people were in the LDS church. (I have a son who recently decided he is atheist. ) One of the areas of questions in our district is reverence. He then went on to say that the family moved and he feels very welcome in the new ward. I was so glad that he continued to believe in God. They have to believe in God to be a boy scouts. God and my country and all of that. Anyway it was a good night and he is a good young man.

So glad that young man sees the importance of getting his Eagle. None of my boys would even try and refuse to even attend scouts or activity night.
