Sometimes we become very worldly in our thoughts. We forget that our loving Father wants to be there for us at all times. Just as a child will ask us for advice or help, we can check in with him and find direction.

I know it is hard when it is a physical or worldly problem, but we need to think it through and ask for advice anyway. Often we get answers when we least expect them and in ways we never thought we would.

There have been times in the past few years when I have almost literally felt my Father's arms around my shoulder as he whispered in my ear reminders and words of comfort. There have been other times when I would hear something and get that tap and "See, this is the answer."

After a day's pondering I think that there are a couple of things that I need to pray about that I have not before. Sort of thought I had to just "muscle through". Duh?

Thank you for your insight! I had never thought of that before in connection with this story.

It reminded me of a time when our family was really struggling financially. REALLY struggling. My mom said she was praying for us and our situation, when she heard a voice say, "She hasn't asked." My mom called me right away and said, "Have you prayed and asked Heavenly Father to help you with your financial problems?" I paused a minute, and realized I hadn't. She told me of her experience and said, " You need to pray and ask." Of course I should have! I felt at the time that, it being such a temporal request, it would be selfish of me and inappropriate. But from the prompting my mom was given, I realized my Heavenly Father was mindful of me and wants me to ask him for help in all areas of my life.

So, thank you again for the reminder! Our Heavenly Father wants us to be healthy. Of course he will help us! We just have to ask.

If it wasn't hard, you wouldn't be getting stronger.

Today I was reading in the begining of Ether. It is talking about the Tower of Babel. Jared ask his bother to pray that their family will not have their language confounded. The Lord allows them to be able to communicate. Then Jared asks his brother to pray that they can understand their friends also. The Lord gives them that blessing also.

As I was reading this I had the feeling that sometimes I limit the Lord. I would be say woe is me I cannot understand my family or my friends. I need to improve my prayers and learn not to limit the Lord. Now I am off to figure out I what I am not praying for that I should be.

Have a super day. Any thoughts on this?

When I was a new bride, RS taught me how to cook. I am ever grateful for those lessons. I learned some from my mother, but she was such a perfectionist that she didn't want others messing up her kitchen.

We had meals themed to holidays, regions, quick meals, crock pot meals, how to make bread, making pies, and other things I didn't always learn as well as I should have.

I don't know what the sisters want to do, but depending on the age of your sisters, heart healthy meals, diabetic meals, low carb meals, and eating on a budget may be helpful. In fact, in the economic situations we live in, some great meals using foods that can be stored for long periods of time may be a great theme. It may inspire your sisters to increase their storage (especially if you feature a staple and have sources for it with the meals) and be more prepared.

I am pondering and praying about next year's theme. Maybe we will work healthy foods into it. But, sometimes that could include good desserts. I am not sure how to meet most people's needs. I don't think an occasional sweet treat is bad. But, we could all learn to enjoy healthier foods. A diabetic sister frequently brings high carb foods. I wonder what she eats at home. There are others with food issues. I don't know the balance yet. I am still working on it.

for myself I need to make scriptures and prayer a bigger part of the process. I think it will help alot. It is part of the process now.

I think as you take care of your body, and that includes eating on fast Sunday because you medically have to, you will still receive the blessings for it! You know you would if you could, and the Lord knows that too! emoticon

I found a quote in my son's scriptures yesterday. I love to be reminded as to why I am striving to get healthy so I don't give up, and this was one I hadn't heard before...

"The largest measure of good which is derived from following the code of health prescribed by the Lord is the increase of faith, the development of more spiritual power and wisdom."
- L. Tom Perry-

How could I not want those blessings? So, I'll keep on keeping on!! emoticon

Maybe that is why I remembered it. I just forgot where it was. I am not the only diabetic. I will think about your suggestions.

There has to be more than one diabetic in your ward. How about some ideas that won't give you sugar or cause your glucose to go high. I think this is a great challenge and one that others will appreciate. Your ideas could help you and the others who struggle with similar problems.

If it is a conflict of interest, another sister could be asked to bring something "diabetic appropriate with some suggestions.

It was a "theme" for Young Men and Young Women. D&C 130 20-21 "There is a law irrevocably decreed in Heaven before the foundation of this earth upon which all blessings are predicated. When we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated."

It was our theme for the year and each week we would recite it. Similar to the Young Women theme but it changed every year.

We have learned often in church about being blessed when we obey the law upon which the blessings are predicated. I don't have time to research the source. But I know that when we show the self control to fast the Lord can give us strength to eat properly.

I can no longer fast. I am a diabetic and it makes my blood sugar skyrocket. So my goal for this month is no sugar from fast Sunday to fast Sunday. This scares me because week night RS will be pampering foods. I guess I will find salad pampering. Actually a good salad is pampering for me. Thanks for letting me think those thoughts out loud.

I find that I am better able to use my own strength when I have asked in prayer for help. How could I do less than my best when I have prayed for help.

Today I read Isaiah 58. It talks about fasting... a true fast where you do it with a spiritual purpose and try to help those who don't have food. It says,

"Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free...

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily...

Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am...

...the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat (strengthen) thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not."

I forgot that the last time I was successful in my weight loss, it began with a renewed effort to fast. I found that I had more willpower on other days, and was strengthened in my resolve to get healthy. I've recently slacked of in this area of my life. Shame on me! I'm going to make this a goal, and this time I'm not going back!

If it wasn't hard, you wouldn't be getting stronger.

Thank you!! I love how he invites us to reduce the rush and take a little time to get to know ourselves better. I think I feel under so much pressure and put myself down until it overwhelms me and I turn to food. My first thing I will do to learn how to love myself better is to study this talk. Even better, I'll do it outside under our tree!

From President Uchdorf's talk "Of things that matter most.
The fourth key relationship is with ourselves. It may seem odd to think of having a relationship with ourselves, but we do. Some people cant get along with themselves. They criticize and belittle themselves all day long until they begin to hate themselves. May I suggest that you reduce the rush and take a little extra time to get to know yourself better. Walk in nature, watch a sunrise, enjoy Gods creations, ponder the truths of the restored gospel, and find out what they mean for you personally. Learn to see yourself as Heavenly Father sees youas His precious daughter or son with divine potential.

Here is the link:

things-that-matter-most?lang=eng

right after this conference I thought, prayed and blogged about this. I think we really need to take time to get to know ourselves as the Lord sees us. We are daughters of a Loving Heavenly Father. Even if we are not perfect we are good and we are loved.

I would love to know your thoughts and how you are learning to love yourself.

Thanks for the thoughts. Linda, it is hard to sleep when a beloved pet passes. I do struggle at times sleeping, but it is something I work on. My problem right now is I call my mother before she goes to bed so I know she is safe. She likes to talk for a while and it is an hour later than I wanted to go to bed. It is harder when I have to get up in the morning.

I do use the suggestions from the experts like not exercising 3-4 hours before going to bed. I try not to drink too late in the evening as I don't want to get up and disturb my sleep too often. I eat a lighter dinner and am not overfilled when I go to sleep.

When I started walking, I did find that my sleep improved. Not only because the weight was coming off but I was getting that exercise in and was better able to sleep because of it.

I think it is great that you keep trying, even though it is such a struggle for you! My husband has the same problem, and so he does the best he can to work through it. I guess that's all that is asked, that we do the best we can!

I read your blog about losing your cat, Simon, and was so touched by it. I love that you asked for a blessing. Truly, only the Savior knows how to heal us, and I think it is wonderful that He is who you turned to. My prayers are with you!

I have always had a problem with getting to sleep. Where I grew up, there was no such thing as TV reception so I would just hunker down under the blanket with a flashlight and or a transister radio, and READ. Then about once a month or so, I would need a day of sleeping in (i.e. sick day) to catch up on my missed sleep. That worked for me as a child but now....

I still have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep and usually only sleep 1 or 2 hours at a time -- some nights getting no sleep at all. A sleep study showed I wake up an average of 1 point 6 times per hour.

Right now I am having problems because I had to put my beloved Simon to sleep on Wednesday. I asked my BIL for a BLESSING and I have to say, it really helped to calm me. I still did not sleep well that night, in fact very poorly even for me, but at least I was not crying my eyes out. Last night was somewhat better.

Thank the lord for the power of the priesthood.

I love that! I'm going to have to go read it. Moderation with food is a big problem of mine.

Here's a scripture I use often...

Doctrine and Covenants 88:124 "...cease to sleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated."

A little background. Each night the family tries to drag me into their "up "til midnight watching movies and playing games" party, instead of getting to bed by ten. I've had to quote this scripture many times to keep me on my "eight hours of sleep" goal. Then I try to start the games and movies earlier the next night. How can they argue with me when it's in the scriptures??

For this coming Sunday my husband is teaching the Gospel Essentials Class and our lesson this week is "The Lord's Law of Health" (Lesson 29 I think in the Gospel Principles Manual). It is about the word of wisdom. We all could use reminders of that and I get from it mostly is to eat in moderation.

Hello! I thought it would be good for us to share scriptures/talks that have inspired us to do better in our "getting healthy" goals. It is easier for me to endure and stick with the counsel I am given when I know it is coming from the Lord! Sometimes the messages the world gives us about how we should look and how to go about getting healthy can be confusing, but I know if I stay true to what the Lord teaches me, how can I go wrong? So, search for those tidbits of counsel, and post them here! I know I can use all the inspiration I can get!
