How interesting that I come upon this topic this morning....my two children are half Jamaican,....my son keeps his hair in dreadlocks....but my daughter is always looking to straighten or color her hair, and I hate it! I always tell her that it does not look natural. She has "mixed" hair, so its long and curly, beautiful....but she wants it straight....I don't get it emoticon

I know everyone's already been saying this but I've got to get on board.

Your hair looks great. If people are making snide comments then they are really just hating and you have to ignore their negative energy and know it says more about them than it does about you.

I agree with everyone else's comments - you look beautiful, with or without the natural style. Girl, just be you and don't pay attention to those haters. We've always had to fight some type of prejudice within and outside of our race, so let it slide off your back. I'm amazed at how many of the black women in entertainment have long straight hair (yeah, right) - it's like hardly anyone will take the risk of flaunting their own natural hair.

I too used to fight the natural look, and sometimes people don't believe that my hair texture has dramatically changed from when I was younger. I used to have extremely kinky, nappy hair that required relaxing every couple of months. As I've gotten older, it seems the Indian/Caucasian side of my family has transitioned my hair from nappy to curly. Now I don't have to use chemicals at all, and I was genuinely shocked when I stopped using them and noticed the change. Sometimes I have to pull out a picture of me in middle school sporting the Afro - yes, Afro - to prove to folks that I'm not lying.

Anyway, you are gorgeous KIM122278, and I'm happy to see another sister embracing her natural beauty regardless of what others think!

I think natural is prettier, and you look good! I know it's hard, but who cares what other people say or think? What's most important is that you are comfortable with yourself!

If it's not the hair they complain about body size or who you are going with or not with...how you dress......haters will always find something to hate but letting them get to you gives them the power...Don't waste your energy on haters....think happy thoughts and kill them with kindness...smile and make them wonder what the heck you are smiling at....I always smile and people question me why I am see no matter what people are just too dang curious or bored with themselves and need to direct their attention on someone that is happy!

Power to the proud...power to the happy...power to the good at heart.....power to you beautiful lady!

Life is way too short to be stressing over what others think. They probably see you rocking it with confidence and are a bit jealous perhaps? Who knows...I have been perm free for over 10 years now and have been talked about for wearing my hair in its natural state to not being nappy enough because I wear a weave occasionally and love to dab in makeup. You can't win. What it all boils down to is what makes you happy. I have stopped judging people on how they choose to wear their hair because that is exactly what India Arie speaks about in her song "I am not my hair", no matter if its chemically altered or in its natural state, there is more to life than just hair. Confidence outshines ignorance any day. emoticon

Khallexy,

I applaud you...well said!

Myself I always loved curly hair and never thought anything bad about it...when everyone was making their curly hair straight I didn't understand why other then I figured they wanted a change...myself I like my curly hair....I think it gives personality to the face....I was always told my hair has that just got out of bed look...no matter how often I brushed it that is how my hair ended up...My mother use to get mad and cut it really short but you can't fight the curls with a lot of body...I now just brush it when I first get out of the shower....blow dry it and if no one likes it look away! It is what it is and I happen to love my look!

Okay so you can't please everyone so you have to please yourself! No I didn't mean touch yourself ...stop that! hehehehe heck no do what feels good! hehehehe

Bad Lisa....hehehehe

Kim, I think your hair looks great!!!!! To be honest I didn;t know what nappy hair was. I thought it was what mine looked like when I woke up!!!! Hair can be an expression of ones' self. Express yourself baby!!!!! As Billy Crystal used to say on Saturday Night live...." you look MAHHHHVELOUS"!!!!!

Wow! I honestly didn't expect this much support on the issue! I'm SO GLAD that I'm not the only one who likes natural hair as it is. I think everyone has the right to wear his/her hair as they please, and others shouldn't judge them because of it either. I LOVE that song by India Arie..Of course, I think I can sing like her too when no one's around, but....no such luck!

I'm a Yankee lol but I actually envy "nappy" hair! Kim, your pix are beautiful! The he** with the haters. Being natural is beauty - that takes guts. Dfuqua, good advice - no one should be judged by outward appearance alone. I personally suffered from "80s hair" for years before transitioning to a more natural style.

This issue with women of color has plagued us since child hood. I remember those days sitting in the salon getting my hair burned to conform and having an occasional burn on the tips of my ears and such. As a teenager I started perming and perming till it literally thinned my hair out because like so many of us we simply HATE OUR NAPPS!!! All those years I did not realize how really beautiful our hair really was. This talk about not being able to go in the rain or play hard because the ole nap will come up and make its presence known which is so untrue when you just let your hair be natural in the state it is in. I started braiding my hair in college and remembering taking my hair down and noticing my hair texture in its truest form! It was not a brillo pad contrary to ignorant comments we make about our hair. It was very soft and pliable. I started to wash and become creative with my own tresses. I even notice the little curls at the ends when I do twists and twist outs. The love affair with my hair has begun. I felt so cheated! All those years hiding what God has blessed me with going along with the program of ignorance! Now as an older woman who sports dread locks I will never in this life put drano like chemicals in my hair nor will advocate perming. A lot of has come to realization of our beautiful hair and there are many who will NEVER get a clue. But it is okay. The shackles of my perm days are so behind me!!!! If I were to have daughters I would never put any chemical in their hair I would teach them self love from day one. Our hair doesn't have to be a struggle it is all relative. It is not the kinks in our hair that is so bad but in our mind which a bigger shame!!!!

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND YOU WILL BE SET FREE!!!!

You look beautiful ... I love your hair.

I straightened my hair until I was 21 ... then I went natural ... it's frizzy sometimes but I deal with it and I love my wavy hair (now).

I am "IN-LOVE" with my nappy hair! But my love affair with my napps didn't come...well..umm...naturally(lol). I cut off all of my hair March of 2008(Big Chop). I expected a bunch of cute coils and curls...uh-NO! I ended up with a headful of coarse 4B NAPS straight from the "motherland" that I now love and wouldn't trade for the world! (But trust me it was a process.)For the sake of variety, I often switch things up wearing wigs, weaves, hats, braids, twists, blow-outs, wash-n-go's, etc. But please don't get confused: I STILL LOVE MY NAPS. I don't hate on those with relaxers, heck, I used to have one too. But at the same time, I HATE when others pass judgement on my hair. If you don't like my naps, don't look!

People should be able to wear their hair anyway they want to. For those who wear their hair naturally I applaud you because I tried it for a period of time and the amount of work that goes into maintaining natural hair was to much work for me. Now I alternate between a relaxer and braids. I don't believe that those of that use relaxers or weaves are not comfortable with natural hair its more of a time and work issue. We have gotten very lazy with our hair, relaxers and weaves allow us to get up and go.. styling is easier, washing is easier.

I think the reason people have a problem with it, and it seems that its the women of color that have a problem with it, is because we have been brain washed to believe that straight hair is better. When no one type of hair is better they are just different and its a personal choice.

Know God Know Peace; No God No Peace

My friend has a salon, I am her only white customer. All of her other customers get perms, relaxers, weaves-glued or sew ins, wigs, etc...I can't believe what they go through for the hair. Yes, we are in the south! I think a lot of black females here don't have the self confidence to keep their hair natural because after they leave the salon they all say now I am pretty, etc......
I applaud you for having the confidence because natural hair is just as pretty.

has anyone heard about the new movie nappily ever after? Halle Berry is going to shave her head in this movie!

I LOVE women of color who have natural hair. It says to me they are very confident with themselves. If others don't like it that is their problem!

Be proud of who you are and remember the song "I am Not My Hair". Be Happy to be nappy because it fits us better. You know strait hair on some people is natural too. My wife likes that look too but she adds color to it. Me I like twists and locks on sisters and of course I like my bald head too.

I've been wearing my hair in her natural state for over 4 years, now, and I LOVE it! My hair has grown more healthily and looks better than it has ever looked. While this is true, there are still some people(especially in the south where I'm from) who HATE my hair. No one has said anything to me directly, but there have been some snide remarks and comments towards the issue. I really HATE that word, "nappy," too. UGH! It just rubs me the wrong way. Natural hair, just like any other style, may not be for EVERYONE, but why is it that natural hair gets such a bad wrap all the time? I think people should be free and feel comfortable wearing their hair how they like without others judging them about it.What do you all think of the issue?
