Well, maid svc is expensive if you hire through an agency vs. hiring undocumented people. But I like to keep everything above board b/c of our son. People need insurance before stepping into our home. I don't need to get sued and end up penniless and unable to provide for his future. So I'm a weirdo about hiring random people to work for us. Not only that, but I've had some bad experiences with maids over the years.

The other issue is that unless I commit to a regular service (every 2 weeks or 1/mo), the hourly prices are high. They send a team, not a single person.

As far as gardening, someday I'll get back out there. I'll definitely have to put up a shade umbrella or something, but I'll do it.

Your husband sounds like a jewel!

I hear that! I'm very grateful that DH has been doing the dishes after every meal for years now. He started right after retiring from the military, when I was commuting for work and he was not yet working. That was 25 years ago and he hasn't stopped yet. He does the vacuuming, too, bless him!

If you control your gardening/yard work to containers, small garden sections, etc. rather than heavy landscaping, you might still find joy in it. And keeping to the shade would also help. I'd suggest a spa day or the gym but that would likely be another added cost.

Maid service seems to be VERY expensive in your area!

Well, you're right that my life-phase is much warmer and less nasty weather tolerant than it used to be! So, I wonder if gardening wouldn't bring me the same joy it used to.

Yes on the housekeeper, I am getting someone in once a month while I have this mystery rib/rib tissue injury. Might even go every 3 weeks. But it's expensive. $300 ish for 3 hours. But at the moment, there's only so much I can do without making my injury worse and my husband and kiddo aren't really able to help in any substantial way.

My dream help, though, would be someone to clean up and wash up after I cook every night. I know I'd cook MUCH more often if I didn't dread the cleanup quite so much.

What can I do for myself today?

I do know that, back in the day, the heat and humidity were something I scoffed at. Now, 35 years older, it is something that I find stifling. My body is no longer so tolerant of the extremes.

Maybe just 1/2 day a month for a housekeeper so that you can go out and play in the sandbox? We all must have dreams, right? Since I've never paid for outside help, I'd have no idea of the cost - which makes it easy for me to come up with improbable solutions.

Minnie - you should schedule the spa day, even if the scheduled day is months away, at least it would be on the calendar, and you'd be proving that you matter and so does your sis. Just a thought. I know if I don't put something in my schedule and only hope to do it, it never happens.

Elizabeth - my fondest memories of gardening were in hot sticky humid VA, near Wash DC which was a swamp before they filled it in! I loved getting grimy and even shopped for bug sprays that were less stinky. I went to a quarry in the heat of summer and hand-selected pink granite blocks to line my beds. I dug out shrubs. Planted bulbs, created little walkways out of slabs and gravel. I loved every grimy minute of it. I know I'm weird. I don't expect others to feel the same. But there's just something special to me about gardening.

And I would hire someone to do the cleaning and washing up every day if it didn't cost so darned much! Yard workers are fairly cheap comparatively. Sometimes I do hire maids. But all these people doing things for me is only because of physical and time challenges that have cluttered my life for the last 10 years or so (since I started homeschooling, the time challenges came, then after 50, the physical challenges started).

I guess it's good to feel wistful about something, it's at least an emotion that isn't overpowering.

What can I do for myself today?

As for yard work, Lisa, you must realize that Goozlebear and I live in hot, sticky, humid Florida. Yard work in the summer (which tends to last at least 8 months!) has us drenched in dirty, gritty sweat in under 15 minutes and it doesn't take much longer than that for the bugs to start feasting. I celebrate that we've gone a full summer without attracting any ticks. The daily tick check was a Tallahassee routine if we'd been out in the yard at all! I absolutely do not miss that.

I'm fortunate - DH does the dishes. He does a fair share of the food prep, too. Lucky? I guess I am blessed!

Perhaps one day the fairy godmother will wave her magic wand over you. Or maybe Minnie's suggestion is a good one - hire people to do your indoor work so you can spend time outdoors?

That's a shame AAAACK. Sounds like you should hire someone to do all the cleaning and washing up so you can have a day of yard work! If only it were that simple, eh?

We are travelling down to stay with my sister on Friday night so we can all meet up to celebrate my cousin's 50th birthday on Saturday. My sister suggested we stay over on Saturday too so she and I can visit a spa together on Sunday while DHs look after the kids. I've had to say no because we just have too much family stuff going on next week and I know I'd be at the spa worrying about when I'm going to find time to get this, that and the other done!
emoticon

We figured out it is 15 years since we last had a spa day together. Let's hope it won't be another 15 years till we can schedule one!

Funny you guys mention loving not having yard work. I miss it! Since I started homeschooling my son, and dealing with special needs stuff, I've had to hire someone to do my yardwork. I often look wistfully out in the yard and wish I could get out and plant things, trim things, weed things. I'd love to do it all myself! That's the kind of exercise I really enjoy.

I'd also love to get back to cooking from scratch more. But the dishes! oh, the dishes! Ick. No.

It is nice not to be tied down by house maintenance and upkeep of the "back 40", or "front 40" as the case may be.

Between Jacksonville, Saint Augustine, the beaches and areas in between, there are so many more opportunities for activities and entertainment here than there were in Tallahassee. And having staff to plan activities and outings are part of our monthly fee so they are doing that for us, too!

Other than leaving the tai chi society behind, I have absolutely no regrets for the choice we made and tai chi alone was not enough to make us stay. Steve was absolutely and adamantly not interested!

We just bought 2020 season tickets for the Alhambra dinner theater. We go to the Saturday matinee which is better for us (and the dogs) than a late evening out.

I used to make a batch of soup every Sunday/Monday so we had soup for dinner twice a week and whatever was leftover would get frozen in smaller containers. DH had soup and salad for lunch every day.

Haven't don't that much since we moved. He still has a lot of salads but not every single day and the freezer holds only so many bowls of soup at a time. We are on the go much more and so eat out more often or grab or else throw something together that takes less time. I'm really having trouble these days with getting excited about cooking.

I'm the same as you Becca, I don't like to order anything in a restaurant that I can cook just as well myself. I like to order the complicated dishes and make them earn their money!

Homemade soups are great. I ought to make more. We have a spell of cold, wet weather here so soup would be comforting.

The sausage and been soup sounds delish! It is a perfect fall dish.

I fixed my mom's veggie beef soup today. Yum. I am into cooking more in the fall, and most the restaurants around here don't cook as well as me! lol!

We save $$ and lose weight here these days. It helps to climb stairs too, which we do a lot of climbing. Sis to her bedroom, and me to the basement laundry.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Friday, the temp will drop 30 degrees, and it has cooled off already anyway. Brrrr!

That soup sounds good. I made a Spark recipe today in my slow cooker. It was the bean and sausage soup with spinach and it was really good. I used canned beans and drained them instead of dried.

Thx Minnie!

Tonight I am treating my sister Betty to homemade meatball and veggie soup!

Today went ok. Picked up my sister's meds, and cleaned out the inside of the car from our trip finally. I cleaned the inside, too. Later, I will finish the sheets in the laundry. There is always something to do.

Hope your weekend is going well, ladies!

Ah, but you DO post on the wall every day -- and we thank you for that!

I often post quotes on my daily feed but am considering changing it to my "activity of the day". What do you think? Should I change or keep it as it has been?

Hoping autumn will eventually show its' face in North Florida. Still above normal temperatures for this time of year. Thankfully no hurricanes have decided to take a direct aim at where we are. Dorian considered it but changed his mind.

Planning on a quick vacation at the beach in a couple of weeks but now we can't make reservations any further than 4 days out. As of yesterday, though, there will still plenty of un-booked rooms available. We are second fiddle to active duty and and PCS (permanent change of station) personnel, which is only proper. We can drive over any day we choose but it isn't the same as just chilling on the beach all day, leisurely dinner out without a long drive home, etc. Not to mention going to sleep to the sound of the surf in the background.

I lived in small towns mostly until I was 32 so I have had both. I have to drive 5.5 miles now just to a Dollar General and it is the only store there other than a convenience store. It is 9 miles to a full grocery store. 12 miles to a Walmart. It teaches one to be organized and self-reliant because in bad weather the roads are not cleared. We don't have a tractor. Some old people stay out here until they no longer can drive then they move to town.

I understand choosing beauty and privacy over convenience. We have a little of both here. It's great while the kids are young because we have schools, shops, doctors, fuel, 24 hr groceries in easy reach. We're in a town but open space isn't far away. In my heart, I'd love to live somewhere a little more remote in the countryside. We might move when the kids are grown up, but maybe we'll be too soft and reliant on convenience by then!

We have a lot of beauty and privacy here but in our area it comes at a cost. Things that people in urban areas have routinely and take for granted we don't have here. You have to drive long distances for some services. Shopping isn't good. We don't have good internet, T.V., phone service, power. No sewers. You will wait a couple of months for a root canal unless you are willing to travel. When we get to the city we are lacking in skills that people who live there use every day to navigate and stay safe. For us it's a trade off.

I actually commented to my husband as we were driving to the start of that walk, "We are so lucky to live here!" We don't have to drive very far to get away from it all. Our favourite walks are the ones where we know there won't be many other people, and I love to be out in the countryside with a view for miles around and not another soul in sight! This is a photo from the same day,

It helps that not many people seem to like walking just for the sake of it. Locally I'll often meet dog walkers or joggers, but rarely anyone else just enjoying a walk.

Minnie, I am always amazed at how much lovely. unspoiled countryside there appears to be in England. Peaceful and rural, especially simply nature, is hard to come by here in the States. We have far too many people for the available resources which, I'm sure, is not unique to this country. It makes it hard, thought, to find quiet, peaceful and natural. I envy you whenever you share your photos.

Happy Autumn Equinox everyone!

I made the most of Summer's last gasp on Saturday. I discovered that there was a "Druid's temple" nearby that we hadn't known about in our 12 years of living here. The quotation marks are because it is not actually a temple, but a nineteenth century folly commissioned by a wealthy landowner to alleviate local unemployment. We cobbled together a family walk to accompany the visit, of suitable length to avoid excessive moaning from the children. It turned out to be a lovely walk with stunning views across open countryside and a variety of woodland. Of course the gloriously clear sunny weather helped, but I imagine it would be good walk in any season, so it will be added to the list of trusty family favourites I think. The folly, which we visited towards the end of the walk, was interesting too and very atmospheric. Here's a photo I found online to give you an idea:

I didn't stay in FL. I drove three days (short drives due to arthritis) to get back to the family home. We don't have hurricane shutters or a generator yet.

Hope u weren't affected too badly and that u kept ur power.

We were in one of the projected paths, but it didn't go that path. My friend is in Port St Lucie. I was really worried!

My brother was scheduled to visit but had to reschedule. I was really looking forward to seeing him!

Ooops! Posted my morning gratitude in the wrong thread so I've moved it to where it belongs.

So far so good with Dorian. Whatever it is when it gets here (it's still @ 125 miles south), it will not have any resemblance to what he was while destroying the Bahamas. Still have my fingers crossed that we will not lose power. Temperatures will climb back up to the mid-90's quickly once the storm passes and, with saturated ground, the mugginess and stickiness will be palpable. A/C is so important then and the lack thereof is absolutely miserable.

It does look now like the biggest part will miss us. We'll still get winds 70+ mph and rain, but that's better than first thought. I just hope we don't lose power, but we're prepared either way.

I know. Bob hates it here. He's from Michigan and has nothing good to say about Florida. But he can't take Michigan Winters and he knows I love it here so we stay. But he still gets really nervous when hurricane season gets here and like now with Dorian, he's almost in a panic. I tell him we're as prepared as we can be and we've been in bad ones over the last 20 years, so I'm not overly worried.

Stay safe. This time of year, I wonder why we stay in Florida but then I remember that every place has its' challenges. I do get tired of having Holiday weekend and vacation plans changed by hurricanes, though. It does seem to happen regularly here in Florida, doesn't it?!

Getting ready for "Dorian" to hit our coastline Sun-Mon, so keep us and Florida in your prayers. They're saying some areas could get over 18 inches of rain in that time frame. It's supposed to come on land right in our area.

I will do my own physical therepy once the cast comes off. And my right hand is getting stronger as I'm able to use it more.

Good morning!! Hope your day goes well and it's the start of a nice weekend.

Been out close to a month. Not scrolling all the way back, tho, don't have that kind of time, sadly.

Nice to see so many here.

Vicki, can your doc recommend physical therapy to minimize the stiffness vs. surgery? Man, I'm sorry you're going through that! And, Happy Birthday (belated).

Minnie, that's my age-old saw right there. How to do self-care without immediately feeling guilty. It's so hard to strike a balance, but I think I'm beginning to see the effects of NOT practicing self care and so maybe it'll be easier.

I think the extremes are easy - a week-long getaway with the girls, and not even calling home, might be selfishness. A quiet place away from your stresses, asking the husband to step in for an hour, asking a neighbor to do something once in a while, I see those as self-care.

But then...I'm awfully behind in regular housecleaning due to some major things going on in our lives that I HAVE to handle, so I hired housekeepers. Selfish? I don't think so b/c we need a clean house to be healthy, and I got sick of looking at bathrooms that hadn't had real attention in a month. I mean I swipe here and there, I vacuum here and there, clean a toilet when I'm thoroughly disgusted with it, but it's always one thing here and there and running right out to do something else.

Balance. Seek it. But as it's nature, balance isn't a static state, is it? It's a continuous motion, an exercise that never ends. Inertia at it's best - a person seeking balance, stays seeking balance, LOL!

What can I do for myself today?

I'm doing better, thankfully. Still trying to be super careful so I heal quicker. Bob helps where he can. It's frustrating when I can't even empty an ice tray, but I can't twist the tray to empty it. So Bob empties the trays and I refill them with water to put back into the freezer. I just don't have any strength in my hands.

I've tried to come up with a response to Minnie's question about self-care vs selfishness. I haven't succeeded well at all. What, exactly, is self-care? How is it defined and by whom?

I don't think I do much that other people might consider for themselves. No spa days, massages, girls night out. My quiet time with my coffee in the morning before I must hold a conversation is self care AND care for others. I'm not particularly nice when I first wake up, especially if it is still dark outside!

I think a basic fitness routine is self-care because it is good for our health and mental attitude. A person can go too far or spend too much but most probably don't. I think not trying to keep in good health is selfish to those around you because it makes it more likely they will become care-givers at some point.

Quite the philosophical question she asked!

Minnie: therapy, talk therapy helps with this. Talk therapy is good self care, too.

We come from a generation of caring for others. That's why we believe we are being selfish when caring for ourselves.

Making a date for yourself, even if it is just a few moments for self care helps. emoticon

I'll keep it in mind. Another reason I put it off for now is because of the stress it would cause Bob. Plus it would make things doubly hard on both of us, since I'm his caregiver. So I'm doing what will cause the less stress for both of us right now.

I was listening to an interview with Marianne Williamson and she said "A lot of what passes for self care these days is actually selfishness disguised as self care", or something along those lines. I totally agree with this, I think a lot of people need to do a little less "self care" and a lot more caring for others!

The trouble is every time I practice self care for myself, I can't help seeing it as selfishness. This doesn't stop me doing it, but the benefits are probably diminished by feeling guilty! How do you get a balance between self care and selfishness?

We never know all of our options or which one would truly be best. The Dr. is right, though, you CAN change your mind later. Everything medical (or almost everything?) improves each year. It is possible that wrist surgery would be a lot less painful than the first one because of that. Something to keep in mind if your pain increases.

He didn't say much about the fractured elbow. He was all about the broken wrist. The break is worse than first thought so he wanted to operate. I told him no, I couldn't do another surgery with plates and screws. Did that 7 years ago with right wrist when I broke it. He says I can do the surgery down the road if need be, but it'll mean re-breaking the bone. But he says not having the surgery may mean a stiff wrist and possibly severe arthritis. But I can deal with that better than daily pain from the plates and screws, like I have now. I wish I'd never had that surgery but at the time didn't know I had any other option.
I'm washing clothes this morning but otherwise going to take it easy. My fractured elbow doesn't like me this morning. Hope everyone has a great Sunday !!

Today is going to hopefully be a stress free, take it easy day, for me. Been pushing myself to do as I normally do and my fractured elbow doesn't like it. So I'll take it as easy as I can today and see how it goes.

Not doing much of anything today if I can help it. Hope everyone enjoys their Sunday.

Daisy's daycare sounds very luxurious Becca! And it will be great to have freshly painted walls to go with the new floors!

Hope you get the refill Vicki. It's a shame the office doesn't have a better system.

Having to wait to see if Ortho doctor is going to ok me to get a refill on the pain meds he prescribed (tylenol 3). I only have 2 left and they close at noon and won't be back til Monday. That office has a piss-poor way of doing things. Unless you're calling for an appointment, you can't talk to a live person. You have to leave a message and hope for the best. If I didn't need the meds, I wouldn't bother, but I'm still having a good bit of pain from the fractured elbow. So we'll see what happens.

Dropped Daisy off to daycare today as the floors are being installed. She has a big bed and a private room with Animal Planet on the TV. Glad she is there, as it is noisy.

It's still pretty painful but I'm managing best I can. The broken wrist is achy but its the fractured
elbow I'm having the most issues with. Can only turn my arm a certain way, not clockwise at all. And have next to no strength in my hand. But it could have been a lot worse.
