October, 4 (Morning) Devotion
“At evening time it shall be light.”

Zechariah 14:7

Oftentimes we look forward with forebodings to the time of old age, forgetful that at eventide it shall be light. To many saints, old age is the choicest season in their lives. A balmier air fans the mariner’s cheek as he nears the shore of immortality, fewer waves ruffle his sea, quiet reigns, deep, still and solemn. From the altar of age the flashes of the fire of youth are gone, but the more real flame of earnest feeling remains. The pilgrims have reached the land Beulah, that happy country, whose days are as the days of heaven upon earth. Angels visit it, celestial gales blow over it, flowers of paradise grow in it, and the air is filled with seraphic music. Some dwell here for years, and others come to it but a few hours before their departure, but it is an Eden on earth. We may well long for the time when we shall recline in its shady groves and be satisfied with hope until the time of fruition comes. The setting sun seems larger than when aloft in the sky, and a splendour of glory tinges all the clouds which surround his going down. Pain breaks not the calm of the sweet twilight of age, for strength made perfect in weakness bears up with patience under it all. Ripe fruits of choice experience are gathered as the rare repast of life’s evening, and the soul prepares itself for rest.

The Lord’s people shall also enjoy light in the hour of death. Unbelief laments; the shadows fall, the night is coming, existence is ending. Ah no, crieth faith, the night is far spent, the true day is at hand. Light is come, the light of immortality, the light of a Father’s countenance. Gather up thy feet in the bed, see the waiting bands of spirits! Angels waft thee away. Farewell, beloved one, thou art gone, thou wavest thine hand. Ah, now it is light. The pearly gates are open, the golden streets shine in the jasper light. We cover our eyes, but thou beholdest the unseen; adieu, brother, thou hast light at even-tide, such as we have not yet.

This is very appropriate for these times. I find I do get weary with the activities of Satan in this world and long for peace and joy in heaven.

“The hope which is laid up for you in heaven.”

Colossians 1:5

Our hope in Christ for the future is the mainspring and the mainstay of our joy here. It will animate our hearts to think often of heaven, for all that we can desire is promised there. Here we are weary and toilworn, but yonder is the land of rest where the sweat of labour shall no more bedew the worker’s brow, and fatigue shall be forever banished. To those who are weary and spent, the word “rest” is full of heaven. We are always in the field of battle; we are so tempted within, and so molested by foes without, that we have little or no peace; but in heaven we shall enjoy the victory, when the banner shall be waved aloft in triumph, and the sword shall be sheathed, and we shall hear our Captain say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We have suffered bereavement after bereavement, but we are going to the land of the immortal where graves are unknown things. Here sin is a constant grief to us, but there we shall be perfectly holy, for there shall by no means enter into that kingdom anything which defileth. Hemlock springs not up in the furrows of celestial fields. Oh! is it not joy, that you are not to be in banishment forever, that you are not to dwell eternally in this wilderness, but shall soon inherit Canaan? Nevertheless let it never be said of us, that we are dreaming about the future and forgetting the present, let the future sanctify the present to highest uses. Through the Spirit of God the hope of heaven is the most potent force for the product of virtue; it is a fountain of joyous effort, it is the corner stone of cheerful holiness. The man who has this hope in him goes about his work with vigour, for the joy of the Lord is his strength. He fights against temptation with ardour, for the hope of the next world repels the fiery darts of the adversary. He can labour without present reward, for he looks for a reward in the world to come.

What a humble man! I let my pride get in the way of God's workings many times. I think I know what is best but if I would patiently wait on God's plans things work out so much better.

“Have mercy upon me, O God.”

Psalm 51:1

When Dr. Carey was suffering from a dangerous illness, the enquiry was made, “If this sickness should prove fatal, what passage would you select as the text for your funeral sermon?” He replied, “Oh, I feel that such a poor sinful creature is unworthy to have anything said about him; but if a funeral sermon must be preached, let it be from the words, ‘Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness; according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.’” In the same spirit of humility he directed in his will that the following inscription and nothing more should be cut on his gravestone:—

William Carey, Born August 17th, 1761: Died - -

“A wretched, poor, and helpless worm

On thy kind arms I fall.”

Only on the footing of free grace can the most experienced and most honoured of the saints approach their God. The best of men are conscious above all others that they are men at the best. Empty boats float high, but heavily laden vessels are low in the water; mere professors can boast, but true children of God cry for mercy upon their unprofitableness. We have need that the Lord should have mercy upon our good works, our prayers, our preachings, our alms-givings, and our holiest things. The blood was not only sprinkled upon the doorposts of Israel’s dwelling houses, but upon the sanctuary, the mercy-seat, and the altar, because as sin intrudes into our holiest things, the blood of Jesus is needed to purify them from defilement. If mercy be needed to be exercised towards our duties, what shall be said of our sins? How sweet the remembrance that inexhaustible mercy is waiting to be gracious to us, to restore our backslidings, and make our broken bones rejoice!

I am glad my soul is in the hands of a loving Savior who took all my sins on Himself and made me a daughter of God. This devotional could be pretty scary if I was not where I am in his hands!

“If they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”

Luke 23:31

Among other interpretations of this suggestive question, the following is full of teaching: “If the innocent substitute for sinners, suffer thus, what will be done when the sinner himself—the dry tree—shall fall into the hands of an angry God?” When God saw Jesus in the sinner’s place, he did not spare him; and when he finds the unregenerate without Christ, he will not spare them. O sinner, Jesus was led away by his enemies: so shall you be dragged away by fiends to the place appointed for you. Jesus was deserted of God; and if he, who was only imputedly a sinner, was deserted, how much more shall you be? “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” what an awful shriek! But what shall be your cry when you shall say, “O God! O God! why hast thou forsaken me?” and the answer shall come back, “Because ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh.” If God spared not his own Son, how much less will he spare you! What whips of burning wire will be yours when conscience shall smite you with all its terrors. Ye richest, ye merriest, ye most self-righteous sinners—who would stand in your place when God shall say, “Awake, O sword, against the man that rejected me; smite him, and let him feel the smart forever”? Jesus was spit upon: sinner, what shame will be yours! We cannot sum up in one word all the mass of sorrows which met upon the head of Jesus who died for us; therefore it is impossible for us to tell you what streams, what oceans of grief must roll over your spirit if you die as you now are. You may die so, you may die now. By the agonies of Christ, by his wounds and by his blood, do not bring upon yourselves the wrath to come! Trust in the Son of God, and you shall never die.

It is encouraging that we do not have to fight our battles alone. We have been made by the potter who knows us better than we know ourselves. Although we might think we know the best way to go, He can see ahead of us and knows us so well - mind, body and soul. If we listen to his voice, He will lead us eventually into the quiet pastures of Psalm 23.

April, 6 Devotion
“In the name of the Lord I will destroy them.”

Psalm 118:12

Our Lord Jesus, by his death, did not purchase a right to a part of us only, but to the entire man. He contemplated in his passion the sanctification of us wholly, spirit, soul, and body; that in this triple kingdom he himself might reign supreme without a rival. It is the business of the newborn nature which God has given to the regenerate to assert the rights of the Lord Jesus Christ. My soul, so far as thou art a child of God, thou must conquer all the rest of thyself which yet remains unblest; thou must subdue all thy powers and passions to the silver sceptre of Jesus’ gracious reign, and thou must never be satisfied till he who is King by purchase becomes also King by gracious coronation, and reigns in thee supreme. Seeing, then, that sin has no right to any part of us, we go about a good and lawful warfare when we seek, in the name of God, to drive it out. O my body, thou art a member of Christ: shall I tolerate thy subjection to the prince of darkness? O my soul, Christ has suffered for thy sins, and redeemed thee with his most precious blood: shall I suffer thy memory to become a storehouse of evil, or thy passions to be firebrands of iniquity? Shall I surrender my judgment to be perverted by error, or my will to be led in fetters of iniquity? No, my soul, thou art Christ's, and sin hath no right to thee.

Be courageous concerning this, O Christian! be not dispirited, as though your spiritual enemies could never be destroyed. You are able to overcome them—not in your own strength—the weakest of them would be too much for you in that; but you can and shall overcome them through the blood of the Lamb. Do not ask, “How shall I dispossess them, for they are greater and mightier than I?” but go to the strong for strength, wait humbly upon God, and the mighty God of Jacob will surely come to the rescue, and you shall sing of victory through his grace.

Morning and Evening Daily Devotional by C.H. Spurgeon
March, 8 (Morning) Devotion
“We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”

Acts 14:22

God’s people have their trials. It was never designed by God, when he chose his people, that they should be an untried people. They were chosen in the furnace of affliction; they were never chosen to worldly peace and earthly joy. Freedom from sickness and the pains of mortality was never promised them; but when their Lord drew up the charter of privileges, he included chastisements amongst the things to which they should inevitably be heirs. Trials are a part of our lot; they were predestinated for us in Christ’s last legacy. So surely as the stars are fashioned by his hands, and their orbits fixed by him, so surely are our trials allotted to us: he has ordained their season and their place, their intensity and the effect they shall have upon us. Good men must never expect to escape troubles; if they do, they will be disappointed, for none of their predecessors have been without them. Mark the patience of Job; remember Abraham, for he had his trials, and by his faith under them, he became the “Father of the faithful.” Note well the biographies of all the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and you shall discover none of those whom God made vessels of mercy, who were not made to pass through the fire of affliction. It is ordained of old that the cross of trouble should be engraved on every vessel of mercy, as the royal mark whereby the King’s vessels of honour are distinguished. But although tribulation is thus the path of God’s children, they have the comfort of knowing that their Master has traversed it before them; they have his presence and sympathy to cheer them, his grace to support them, and his example to teach them how to endure; and when they reach “the kingdom,” it will more than make amends for the “much tribulation” through which they passed to enter it.

I definitely like order and strict guidelines. I felt the best when I could follow what ever my boss told me to do rather than step out and try new ideas. This may work in the workplace but it does not work with God. He has a specific plan for each of us and wants to talk to us individually about these plans. The plans He has for someone else are not the plans He has for me. If I try to be like "everyone else" I am missing out on the blessing He has for me. This is a work in progress for me to learn to let Him set my path and to have faith that it will work out. This is my theme for the year - what are the blessings I am missing when I do not have faith to follow and to notice the blessing I am flooded with when I do follow.

Let the Spirit Take the Lead
Adapted from the resource Hearing from God Each Morning - by Joyce Meyer

Most people are afraid not to be like everyone else; they’re more comfortable following specified rules than daring to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. When we follow man-made rules, we please people, but when we step out in faith and follow God’s Spirit, we please Him.

We don’t need to feel pressured to pray a certain way, for a certain length of time, or to focus on specific things because other people are doing so. Instead, we can be free to express our uniqueness as we pray the way God is guiding us. He uses each of us to pray about different things so that every need is covered in prayer.

Somehow we feel safe when we’re doing what everyone else is doing, but the sad thing is that we will feel unfulfilled until we learn to “untie the boat from the dock,” so to speak, and let the ocean of God’s Spirit take us wherever He wills.

I spent many years tied to the “dock,” following specified rules and regulations of prayer that others had taught me. It was a good beginning, but eventually my prayer experience became very dry and boring. When I learned to untie my boat and let the Holy Spirit lead me, a freshness and creativity came and it has been wonderful ever since. I find that He leads me differently almost every day as I pray, and I no longer do it according to rules, regulations, and time clocks.

Right now, start asking God to show you who you truly are, and to help you hear and follow His voice according to the one-of-a-kind, wonderful way He’s created you.

Prayer Starter: Holy Spirit, I invite You into my day. Thank You for showing me who I really am, the purpose You’ve given me, and for giving me the grace to begin to walk it out. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This was a good reminder that I need to be much more grateful for everything that happens to me. Gratitude is the prescription for self-pity.

Freedom from Self-Pity
Adapted from the resource Closer to God Each Day - by Joyce Meyer

For many, many years, “Why me, God?” was the cry of my heart, and it filled my thoughts and affected my attitude daily. I lived in the wilderness of self-pity, and it was a problem for me, my family, and the plan God had for my life. I felt like I was owed something for the way I had been mistreated as a child, but I was looking to people to pay me back when I should have been looking to God.

When Jesus met the man who had been lying by the pool of Bethesda for 38 years waiting for a miracle, He asked if he was serious about getting well. Many people would like a miracle, but they’re not ready to give up their blame and self-pity.

God wants to give us beauty for ashes, but in order to make the exchange, we have to be willing to let go of the ashes! That means giving up the self-pity, blame, and bitter attitudes. This day can be a new beginning for anyone willing to forget the past and truly follow Jesus!

Prayer Starter: Father, please help me to truly let go of self-pity, and to trust You to make things right in my life. Thank You for making a way for me to get well! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Joseph was certainly a good example of believing that God was in control. God was moving continually in his life to preserve the people of Israel. As we go through the difficulties in life, I pray that we can see God working and have faith that He is working even if we can not see it

God Meant It for Good
Adapted from the resource The Confident Women Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

Whatever may have happened to us in the past, it does not have to dictate our future. No matter what people have tried to do to us, God can take it and turn it around for good. We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose. (Romans 8:28 AMPC) Sometimes we forget how big our God is.

Through everything that happened to him, Joseph kept his eyes on God. He didn't sit around and gripe and complain and have a pity party. Despite what others—even his own brothers—did to him, he didn't allow himself to be filled with bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness. He knew it didn't matter who was against him, because God was for him and would eventually work out everything for the good of everyone involved.

Joseph knew that whatever happened, God was on his side. He let God build his life, his reputation, and his career. That’s what you and I need to do. We need to put no confidence in what we see around us, but to put ourselves entirely in God’s hands.

Prayer Starter: Father, please help me to forgive the people who’ve hurt me. Thank You for being on my side, and for somehow using my pain for my long-term good. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I am not sure why, but I am ALL ABOUT God's Will over my own. I feel blessed about that because I absolutely understand how this can be a tough area of struggle, and of course I probably don't feel that way immediately, but I "get there" quickly.

Honestly, I don't want anything that's not God's Will for me. I know that ultimately His Plan will be better. Whether or not I can see it is not for me to question. Not that I'm not allowed to pray that my will be in accordance with God's Will.

I like that she says to ask for things but to also tell Him that if not in His will, it is OK. That is the hard part. When my strong will wants something so badly, it is hard to surrender and say what ever you want is OK. Later, looking back, I can see that His will was best for sure.

Go Ahead and Ask
Adapted from the resource The Confident Women Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

I want to encourage you to be filled with confidence as you approach God in prayer. God wants us to enjoy prayer and that won’t happen as long as we are afraid of making mistakes. He promises to hear us and answer if we have prayed according to His will, but what if we ask for something that is not His will? We do need to pray according to God’s will to the best of our ability, but we should not allow the enemy to ensnare us in so much fear that we are afraid to ask God for the things that are on our hearts.

The worst that can happen if we pray outside of God’s will is that we won’t get what we ask for—and that will be for our ultimate good! God knows our hearts and He will not become angry if we make a mistake and ask for something that is not His will. We don’t need to approach Him with the fear that we might make a mistake or that He will not be pleased if we ask for too much.

I usually will ask God for what I want and need, always sticking to His Word as best I can, and then say, “God, if anything I’ve asked for is not right for me, then I trust You not to give it to me.” Go to Him in faith, with boldness, expecting to receive His answer.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to be bolder and more confident as I pray. I know You’re always ready and willing to guide me and provide what I need. Thank You for making a way for me to come to You with my needs, and for being faithful to answer my prayers. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I love Joyce, and I love my prayer life.

With what is going on in me most recently, I find myself saying to God, even when in my flesh I don't mean it.... my heart is just speaking on my behalf I think.... thy Will be done. There are so many things going on right now. I know God is in all of them. I am waiting to hear if my medical insurance is going to be dropped! It is a scary time, but with God by my side I know all will be as He wills it.

I am so glad that God does not expect us to be perfect in our prayers. As Joyce says, sometimes the most effective prayers are when we are at our lowest point and all we can say is "Help". We have totally surrendered to His will and are asking as a little child, for his intervention.

Simple Believing Prayer
Adapted from the resource The Confident Women Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

I was dissatisfied with my prayer life for many years. I was committed to praying every morning, but I always felt something was missing. I finally asked God what was wrong, and He responded in my heart by saying, “Joyce, you don’t feel that your prayers are good enough.” I wasn’t enjoying prayer because I had no confidence that my prayers were acceptable.

Too often we get caught up in our own works concerning prayer. Sometimes we try to pray so long, loud, or fancy that we lose sight of the fact that prayer is really just conversation with God. The length or loudness or eloquence of our prayer is not the issue. The only important elements to prayer are the sincerity of our hearts and a confidence that God hears and will answer us.

We can be confident that even if we simply say, “God help me,” He hears and will answer. We can depend on God to be faithful to do what we have asked Him to do as long as what we’re asking is in agreement with His will.

Prayer Starter: Father, please help me to pray in line with Your Word, and to let go of the pressure to pray perfectly. Thank You for loving me, and for hearing and answering my prayers! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Don’t Make Big Decisions in the Storm
Adapted from the resource The Confident Women Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

Life isn't one big, long sunny day. At some point, we all face storms—whether they come in the form of unexpected illness, job loss, financial crisis, marital difficulties, problems with children, or any number of other scenarios that are stressful, intense, and important. I have faced many storms in my life—some like the quick afternoon storms that are common in summertime and some that seemed like category four hurricanes. If I have learned anything about weathering the storms of life, I have learned that they don't last forever, and that if at all possible, I do not need to make major decisions in the midst of them.

When the storms of life arise, it's best to keep your mind and emotions as still as possible. Thoughts and feelings often run wild in the midst of crises, but those are exactly the times we need to be careful about making decisions. We must remain calm and discipline ourselves to focus on doing what we can do and trusting God to do what we cannot do.

Next time you face a storm or crisis in your life, I hope you'll remember these words, which I often say: "Let your emotions subside before you decide." Do your best to let things settle down before you make major decisions. You may not always have that choice, but as much as possible, put significant decisions on hold until your storm passes. Just as the wind blows about wildly during a storm, our thoughts can become quite wild and frantic, and that is not the best time to make major decisions.

Making this commitment will protect you from making quick, unwise decisions that could take you off the course God has for you.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to not rush to make important decisions when I’m not in the right frame of mind. Thank You for your wisdom and grace to make the right choice at the right time. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

I'm currently reading "Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself" by Dr. Dispenza I also listen to his meditations. He makes some really interesting points about stress, and anxiety, worry, fear causing us to have different illnesses. Kinda like what we put out in the universe is what we sometimes bring back to ourselves. So far it's a fascinating book. emoticon

I agree, great positive attitude Sue! My sister has RA since childhood. At one point she was confined to a wheelchair and hospital bed. My parents had her to all types of doctors and they took her to an osteopathic clinic where they gave her gold shots.....I'm quite sure they don't do that anymore.

But she is fully functioning all of her adult life. Recently she was diagnosed with MS but she keeps a positive attitude and goes forward.

I think that is the big key. I'm reading a book by Dr. Dispenza of how you can use your mind to heal your body. It's pretty interesting.

I love your positive attitude Sue. This is true that as people see you content with your path in life that God has allowed you to have, they will be drawn to you and in turn drawn to God.

Amen and amen! I would like to think that I am shining a bright light on others, and God gets all the glory. My new health circumstances have thrown me for a little loop.... but I know that after I get over the shock and disappointment that God has allowed me to have RA... I know that I will bounce back in every way and continue to love my God so much that hopefully people will wonder, "how can I get what she has?". That is the exact thought that went through my own mind decades ago when I met the woman who was to bring me to Christ!!

To be in partnership with God is an awesome situation. I do have to remember that I am an ambassador for Him not only in words but deeds. Growing up we used to sing a song in VBS that has always stuck with me. It was titled "Do you know oh Christian, you're a sermon in shoes" The verses told us to walk it and talk it, know it and show it, give it and live it, a sermon in shoes".

Harmony with God
Adapted from the resource My Time with God - by Joyce Meyer

As a teacher of God’s Word, it is not my job to preach amazing sermons that will impress people, but rather to share His Word in such a way that they might want to be brought into harmony with Him. God has brought us into harmony with Himself, and His desire is to work through us to do the same thing for the multitudes that are separated from Him and living in darkness.

What a great privilege it is to bring people to God! Life lived out of harmony with God is a miserable life. It is one filled with sin, darkness, fear, anger, confusion, and never-ending disappointment. It is one lived without the awareness of God. I remember living a life like that, and I will be forever grateful for the new life that Jesus has provided for me. Let’s be thankful today that we’re aware of God and that we can come to Him without fear of rejection.

Ask yourself: Are people being brought to God by my words and deeds? I pray that they are! We have an amazing opportunity to partner with God in the reconciliation of the lost people in this world. We are ambassadors for God, and as such, we represent Him in the earth today. God is making His appeal to the world through us (see 2 Corinthians 5:20). Working with and for God is the greatest privilege that anyone could ever have. Let the people around you see Christ shining through you today!

Prayer Starter: Father, I’m so excited to partner with You to rebuild Your relationship with the human race. Grant me the grace to live my life in such a way that people can see You through me! Let my life bear good fruit for Your kingdom today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Great thoughts today. Uncomfortable does not have to mean misery, it could just mean a new perspective is needed. I am glad God wants to help us grow and uses many different ways to do this.

God Wants to Take You to a New Level
Adapted from the resource Hearing from God Each Morning - by Joyce Meyer

Even though God wants us to live joyful, contented lives, He sometimes causes discontent, or a feeling that something isn’t right, because He does not want us to continue doing the same old things anymore. He wants to prod us to seek Him so He can take us to new levels.

God always wants us to grow stronger, to go deeper, and to increase in intimacy with Him. Most of the time, He brings us into that process of maturity by leading us out of places where we’ve been comfortable in the past. Too much comfort for too long can mean that we’re not growing. If you feel something stirring in your heart but it doesn’t fully make sense, just ask God what’s happening, wait for Him to speak, and He will come through with the answer you need.

Our time with Jesus is vitally important to our growth and maturity, but we cannot do the same things all the time and experience all that He has for us. I’ve had times when reading the Bible became laborious and God led me to read a different translation for a few months. That small change brought so much new growth because I saw things in a different way. Satan tried to condemn me because I didn’t feel like reading the Bible, but God was just trying to get me to make a change in the translation I was reading.

One day during this process, I felt a bit bored as I tried to read and pray so I moved to another chair in my office. Suddenly I saw things that had been in my office for years that I had never noticed before. One little adjustment caused me to see things from a whole new perspective and God taught me a spiritual lesson, all because I sat in a different chair.

Prayer Starter: Father, please show me whatever adjustments I need to make in my life so I can begin to learn and grow closer to You. Thank You for your faithfulness and your willingness to lead, guide and direct me every day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Putting my family or friends first is not a hard choice but to do it to a stranger at the store, on the road, at work, etc is a definite struggle every day. It is not that I do not want to do it, I just do not think about it as I hurry on my busy schedule. I will try to do better - this is a good reminder.

What do you prefer?
Adapted from the resource New Day New You Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

Giving preference to others requires a willingness to adapt and adjust. It means to allow another to go first or to have the best of something.

We show preference when we give someone else the best cut of meat on the platter instead of keeping it back for ourselves. We show preference when we allow someone with fewer groceries in his cart than we have in ours to go in front of us at the supermarket checkout counter, or when we are waiting in line to use a public restroom and someone behind us in line is pregnant or elderly and we choose to let that individual go ahead of us.

Each time we show preference we have to make a mental adjustment. We were planning to be first, but we decide to be second. We are in a hurry, but we decide to wait on someone else who seems to have a greater need. A person is not yet rooted and grounded in love until they have learned to show preference to others (see Ephesians 3:17).

Don't just learn to adjust, but learn to do it with a good attitude. Learning to do these things is learning to walk in love.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to truly prefer other people today with a good attitude. Help me to humble myself and love others the way You do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What is godly sorrow?
Adapted from the resource My Time with God Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

Yesterday I encountered a person who was quite demanding that I do something she wanted me to do and would not take no for an answer. I ended up being rude to her and I feel a godly sorrow over my behavior. I always want to represent God well, and that means I often need to be long-suffering with someone who is irritating to me.

I don’t feel guilty and condemned, because I have repented and know that I am forgiven, but I do feel a godly sorrow, and I think that feeling is healthy and right. We should take our sin seriously and be deeply penitent when we do something that we know is wrong.

Although this feeling is uncomfortable, I welcome it because it impresses on me the importance of my witness for Christ and reminds me of how easy it is to behave in a fleshly and carnal way. The Bible urges us repeatedly to be on our guard against the temptations we encounter in the world and to live carefully. Being rude to someone may seem a small thing, but it is the little foxes that spoil the vine (see Song of Solomon 2:15).

I believe we should appreciate any feeling of chastisement that we receive from the Holy Spirit, because it is God helping us be the kind of people who represent Jesus well.

Prayer Starter: Lord, I appreciate Your conviction and chastisement and I am deeply sorry for my sins and grateful for Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Sue - The sheep with follow the shepherd that they know is trustworthy. Trying to trail them from behind would be a disaster because the front of the sheep would go all separate ways and get lost. If the shepherd treats them kindly they recognize his voice and will follow eagerly. Sheep can be pretty dumb too. If they get their head caught in a fence, they will just stand there and die but if someone (the shepherd or a dog, etc) comes up behind them and scares them, they will start trying to get out. They, for the most part, are not very motivated except to eat.

I'm sorry I did not tell you my name. I thought people knew me from our previous team. My name is Linda.

I agree with you Val, about each individual taking something different from what they read to hopefully apply to their journey. What speaks to one might not speak to the other.

MDSCOORD, I have read that sheep are rare animals in the sense that they can get herded with the shepherd in front of them, leading the way, like this devotional relates, rather than behind them. Is there any truth to this that you know of? Also, if you're comfortable, would you share your first name with us?
It might just make responding easier but wherever your comfort level is, is just fine!

My husband's family raised sheep for many years and he has lots of stories about the nature of sheep. They really do need a shepherd to take them to safe places and to protect them. They follow the other sheep where ever they go so the shepherd needs to round them up and direct them. We are so like these sheep and need Jesus in our lives to direct us and protect us. Although we may think we know the best way and get belligerent when things do not go our way, it is much safer and smarter to follow the shepherd who knows the way and the dangers ahead of us.

The Christian walk was extremely difficult for me I had to break many many bad habits and some habits still crop up for me in times of stress. I am currently reading the book of Daniel and each chapter in the bible teaches me something different. I am not a theology expert but, I think as individuals we all take something unique from what we read....each person may not interpret the same as others, therefore all of our journies are different. God chooses how he speaks through us.

Word of Jesus Daily Devotional for Women by: Carolyn Larsen
Be Still And Listen

When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because the know his voice. John 10:4

Perhaps you have had the experience of being in a crowd of people and hearing a loved one call your name. How did you pick out the one voice from the cacophony of noise? It’s a voice you love.

Do you recognize Jesus’ voice in the noise of life? How do you know which voice in your mind is that of the Good Shepherd? You learn to know His voice by hearing it. You hear it by listening. You can only listen when you are quiet. Be still and listen for the Shepherd’s voice. The more you hear it, the easier it will be to recognize it.

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

I love the Lord, I preface my comment with that.

So many things about the Christian walk are so hard for me. They are worth the struggle, of course, but they do not come easily to me. I am a slow learner.

I struggle with worry. And I struggle with all of the waiting I feel I must do, to be able to see what God intends for my life. My husband is a good man but not a great leader of the household and I tend to want to run in front of him and make a bunch of decisions without waiting for God to direct. It's just scary, is all.

Life is so much easier then we can see the path He has prepared for us. It is in times of waiting that impatience can take us off on to a different path.

Waiting for Light

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a lightened path in front of you that showed you where to go and what to do? You do, you know! Jesus is the Light of the world. Staying close to Him, reading His Word and praying means that your path will be lit.

Does that mean you always know exactly what to do at any given moment? NO. It does mean that if you wait, He will guide you. If you rush ahead – making decisions and choices on your own – you’ll end up in darkness.

You Lord keep my lamp burning My God turns my darkness into light. Psalm 18:28

This is absolutely something I need to work on as well. It's one area of my life that I need to learn to surrender to God.

Worry takes time away from doing more productive things. Surrender to the will of God, what ever it may be, is the best answer but not always my first thought. I need to work on this.

Words of Jesus for women By: Carolyn Larsen

Stop Worrying

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. John 14:1

worry. Not worrying can be a challenge. You worry because you care so much. You worry because situations come where you aren't in control. You worry because you don't know the ending that's coming. You worry because you can't fix things for yourself or those you love.

The problem with worry is that you can't trust God and worry at the same time. Worry pushes aside trust so if you know Jesus loves you; if you believe what His word teaches, and ask Him to help you trust instead of worrying.

It is easy to think that something good (work, sports, reading, hobbies) would not be an idol because it is "not bad". Unfortunately, anything that gets in the way of worshiping God is definitely to be considered an idol.

Word of Jesus Daily Devotional for Women by: Carolyn Larsen

God Alone

Jesus answered, It is written Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only. Luke 4:8

You would never intentionally worship someone or something other than God, right? It happens so slowly that some thing or activity or person begins to take your time, attention and money, and suddenly your priorities are upside down. It’s a slow slide down a slippery path that pulls you away from God.

This verse is Jesus’ response when Satan tempted Jesus to worship him instead of God. Be alert to where your time and energy are going. Stay focused on knowing and worshiping God.

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; He is to be feared above all gods. Psalm 96:1-4

I'm with you about this one. My husband and I have put ourselves into a holding pattern for three years now, where would SHOULD be making a real plan and true decisions, instead. I feel grateful that God has been allowing us to stay in this holding pattern, but I believe that we are not getting the blessings that we would, if we kept moving in the direction He already knows we need to be.

When we think about the Israelites walking around in the desert for 40 years, it so illustrates how very patient God is toward us.

God can even use our mistakes for His glory. He has a plan but we do not always hear His whispers as to where to go. If we take a detour, He can still use it to teach us to listen better, to sacrifice more, to have more patience, etc. The detour may make our journey longer than if we had listened but we can still make it to the goal when we get back on track.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].

— Ephesians 2:10 (AMP)

God Is Bigger Than Your Mistakes

Adapted from the resource New Day New You Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

We are God's own handiwork. He created us with His own hands. We got messed up, so we had to be re-created in Christ Jesus. We had to be born again so that we could go ahead and do those good works that God had preplanned and predestined for us before Satan tried to ruin us.

Just because you and I have had trouble in our lives or just because we have made mistakes does not mean that God's plan has been changed. It is still there. All we have to do is get back on track.

I think too that sometimes Christians seriously believe that they ARE meant to “do everything “ for the Kingdom... sometimes with drastic results because we are simply not all equipped for all things. A silly example, really... Church always wanted me to volunteer in the children’s nursery. When I did it, sure, I served a purpose... but I really hated it. Fortunately a bunch of women came along who LOVED being in the children’s nursery and it was the highlight of their week! That’s what God wants... to have given us Gifts that jive with our individual personality and strengths, and we send that out into the world with great joyfulness. I led a women’s Bible study for 15 years, and it was hard work, yes, but gave me such a sense of joy and purpose!

I agree with Sue that we all have talents that God has given us and He expects us to use them. If we all were evangelistic, where would the nurturers or the support people be? The Bible says we are all a body and some are eyes, some are ears, etc, some are more honorable but all are needed. When I am with people who are evangelistic, I let them use their talents to bring them to Jesus then I am there to help the person that is learning and taking baby steps in their faith. We are all called to serve but we all serve in different ways.

One could also say that people with a wide array of talents of gifts for spreading the word in what avenues they chose while others the Lord speaks through them in different ways. I find if I tell someone in my immediate life about my faith and if they don't seem receptive to that I tend not to push the issue. But, I try to do that out of respect for ones' beliefs but perhaps I should try another avenue to welcome them to find their own faith.

Let me know what you think, Sisters. My first reaction to this devotional is to think that although there is a Great Commission and of course we want to bring everyone to Christ that we can, I also believe that not everyone is gifted in evangelism. I think some Christians love doing this and have a comfort level. I leave the heavy lifting to them as I focus on my own Gifts and trying to bring people to the Lord in my own personal way.

Jesus Came For All

It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Mark 2:17

Do you hang around with people who are like you? People, who believe like you do and have the same standards and lifestyle? OK, be honest – do people who are different kind of scare you? Do they make you uncomfortable? Of course, you believe that all people need to hear about Jesus, but do you secretly hope that someone else will tell them?

What would it take for you to get out of your comfort zone a little so that you can be a living example Jesus’ love and care to those who need it?

I agree that all of us have sinful hearts. Jesus said to look at a child to see a heart he loves. They are so forgiving, loving, and trusting. Only Jesus can wash our hearts clean but watching a child (except when they are selfish or tired) gives us an example to watch.

A Clean, Pure Heart

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8

What does it mean to be pure in heart? Purity suggests cleanliness; something that has not been even slightly dirtied.

The problem is that you were born with a sinful heart, so how can it be made pure? The only way to clean a sinful heart is by confessing your sin to Jesus and asking for forgiveness. His sacrifice paid the price for your sin, and He will wash your heart clean. Keep your heart focused on God.

Dear Father, Confession doesn’t come easily to me because I get lost in all I need to confess. Father, make my sins visible to me so that I may bring them to You for confession. Help me to truly repent, and turn away. Lord, help me to keep my heart focused on You.

One On One

If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. Matthew 18:15

A friend hurts you. If your first response is to tell someone else about it and garner support….well, you’re not taking the Jesus route.

Jesus says that the first thing you should do is go to the person who has hurt you and see if you can work things out together. If you talk about the situation with others, then your friends choose sides and more problems are created. Keep it personal.

Brothers and Sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:1-2

Number One

Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last and the servant of all. Mark 9:35

Jesus’ words here are counter to pretty much everything the world counts on as a success. By Jesus’ measurement of success, there is no room for pride. He says to serve others, not walk all over them.

The servant mentality may not make you a success in some people’s eyes but it sure does in Jesus’ eyes. That’s the most important anyway? Right?

I agree Sue. We are all broken souls with a God shaped vacuum in our hearts that only He can fill. I am so glad I do not have to try to prove myself to God that I deserve heaven but He freely gives us that gift in spite of what we have done.

This has always been such a powerful Scripture to me because when I was a new Christian I really had a crushing amount of shame and regret about my life. This Scripture reassured me that God loved ME, broken me, so much, that He sent His Son to die so that I can be in relationship with the Father. AND get Eternal Life, on top of it! WOW

God’s Love For You

For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

This is probably the most well-known verse in the Bible. In fact, you may know it so well that you just breeze through it without really thinking about the power in these words.

Jesus spoke these words to Nicodemus, a religious leader who no doubt knew the Scriptures but didn’t understand what Jesus had come to do. Take time to read the verse and think about every phrase. These words are filled with God’s love for you.

Today's devotional is so true. When my husband and I were in college, we had a friend who was financially very desperate for money to buy food for the family. Even though we also had a very limited amount of money, I anonymously put some money in her mailbox. When she got it, she immediately came to me and told me how grateful she was for this blessing from God that "someone" had put in her mailbox. Just seeing her joy and gratefulness was enough for me to realize I do not need the credit for the gift but God does who gave me the money and the idea in the first place.

I think we all grow and change and learn, I for one never stop learning and being curious and I am thankful that God made me creative and curious and I am sure he had his reasons for that. It is one thing to read the words of God/Jesus and another to apply to your life. Each day is a new beginning to apply what we learn to our lives. emoticon

All You Need

When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, Your giving may be in secret. Matthew 6:3-4

It feels good to help someone in need. Maybe it feels so good that you want to talk about it. But, when you talk about it then attention is drawn to you and it becomes a sort of “pat yourself on the back” scenario…..even if you didn’t intend it that way.

Jesus takes pride out of helping others by encouraging you to do good deeds, but to keep quiet about what you have done. Take joy in the fact that you know what you did ….and so does Jesus. That’s all that’s important.

It is so easy to judge from first impressions. I have found that many times my first impression is wrong because of something that I feel about myself. It is not easy to realize that we see our faults in others but I can see it so clearly in my children. They learned behavior from me growing up so I need to change and apologize to them and show them I can change and so can they.

I agree @BELLA44 with everything you said. I have been adding the floral images I suppose just because I want to really. I received this book as a gift this past Christmas and thought it would be perfect to share the daily devotions from it with everyone and it serves different purposes it teaches me and hopefully gives food for thought for others as well.

Word of Jesus Daily Devotional for Women by: Carolyn Larsen
A Critical Spirit

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Matthew 7:

The sad thing is that a person who has a critical spirit can’t seem to see her own issues – only the faults of others. She’ll find something to criticize about pretty much everyone and she is not a very fun person to be around.

Jesus' words are a challenge to get real and not let yourself be one of those critical women. Be honest with yourself and deal with your own issues instead of criticizing others.

Every woman is responsible for her own choices. So, don’t criticize someone else’s behavior but ignore or justify your own.

Search me God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24

I love the beautiful floral pics that accompany our daily devotionals! Today's and yesterday's (especially) are both areas that I need to work on and have been timely reminders for me. One of my goals is to try to see things from another's perspective...to meet people where they are. There is a wonderful sermon I heard recently that I hold foremost in my mind: basically it's that God see the entirety of our lives from beginning to end. In most cases, the people we interact with, we are seeing them at a moment or moments in their lives that may or may not be their best representation of themselves. When we judge others or choose to treat them based on their behavior(s) or lack thereof, we are both limiting who they are as a whole person and in doing so, we treat them based upon their behaviors when we, ourselves, would hope others would excuse us when our behaviors are not at their best. If God accepts us and does not treat us according to our sins, should we not also do the same for others?

~Bella (EST)

In the end what matters most is: How well did you live. How well did you love. How well did you learn to let go.

Word of Jesus Daily Devotional for Women by Carolyn Larsen

Priorities

What good is for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Luke 9:25

This verse issues a challenge to honestly examine your life. You may confidently say, “God is most important in my life, of course,” But is it really true?
Think about how you spend your time and energy every single day. Is it time with God the first thing pushed aside when life is busy? Does the focus to earn more money or accumulate more stuff or gain a higher position take precedence?

If knowing, love and serving God is really most important, then spending time with Him, getting to know Him better and studying His word should be your priority, if it isn’t confess it now and ask God’s forgiveness. Make Him your number one priority.

Dear Father,

I have often spoken the words that You are most important in my thing in my life, but I confess that there are times where my behavior doe not bear out the conviction of those words. Forgive me, Father. Help me to get my priorities in line and give You the place of honor in my heart.

In Jesus name Amen

It goes so against my human nature to be kind to everyone. It is much easier to use the scripture in the Old Testament "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" to deal with difficult people. Jesus changed this drastically by saying treat everyone equally kindly. It is amazing how much better things work out if I do this. Enemies can become friends with Jesus' love. Thanks for reminding us of this command.

Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31
A simple command, right? It’s so basic – treat other people the way you want them to treat you…With kindness, respect, and honesty.
The interesting thing about Jesus’s words here is that they come in the middle of instructions on how to treat people you may not like – people who rub you the wrong way, people who perhaps just aren’t nice, people with whom niceness is difficult.
Let’s face it, treating your friends with kindness is not tough; treating the others with kindness…well, that’s the Jesus way to live.

No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted. -Aesop
