A group of us have done it and are now going through the Maintenance portion of it.

(It's a full nutrition plan created by Dr. Philip Goglia. The maintenance plan, along with the 3 week Quickstart plan aka "Bust Your Rut" diet, is in Dr. Goglia's book: Turn Up the Heat.)

Would love to have you come over and check us out! We're big fans of the "Bust a Rut" diet and several of us have gone through it more than once.

Hope to see you there!

This plan is also in Oxygen Magazine's collector's edition called "Off The Couch" and may still be on the magazine racks. They re-named the article "Lose 10 lbs in 21 days" and elaborated a little bit more on it. It is Goglia's program. I did this back in Nov and it really kick started my metabolism and cleaned up my system. Loved it and will use it as a framework or come back to it from time to time.

I had enough energy today to do 90 minutes at the gym so I have been feeling pretty good on this plan.
My weigh in is in 2 days and I think that I will be a little disappointed but we will see.

I had a little slip up last night while making dinner for the family, a few prawns and a few slices of chorizo sausage. But I am back on track now and am feeling pretty good. Down 3 pounds as of this morning. Hoping for one more by my MOnday weigh in.

How are you doing?

Day 4 is going well. I have already drank my water for today and just dinner and berries left. The hardest part for me is making a separate (more appetizing) dinner for my family. It is hard for me not to take bite here and there.

I've been doing the extra fruit. Easy portion control. Most of the time I have a hard time sticking to 12 almonds unless I pre bag the serving sizes. I've tried the apple sauce and shredded wheat once, it wasn't my fav. I think I will try it again with a sprinkle of cinnamon. I do like being able to substitute breakfast with a whey protein shake. Sometimes I put it in my coffee, mocha style.

what do you choose for your snack? I have done the almonds and the applesauce and shredded wheat. I like both, but the applesauce and shredded wheat feels a lot more substantial.

I'm so proud of you!!! You're doing great!!
I did pretty good, except for the sliver of pizza I ate at work because I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was. I entered my food journal and am around 1100 calories so I think I'll be OK. Not going to worry about it just keep working it.
I'm cooking extra rice tonight so I will be "hecka" more prepared then today.
I re-read the article and noticed the supplement list I didn't remember from before. Are you taking any of the supplements listed? I have been taking some of them already. Going to look into the others.

Welcome VAJ38DD and Gmanese!

so today was day 2 and it went well. I followed the plan pretty much, but I didn't eat the salad. I also had to choke down the fish, I usually like fish but I have never had to eat it 2 days in a row before, I see I will have to eat it for 12 more days emoticon . The rest of the meal plan I like, I just dread dinner. Also, again I was able to meet my quota of 22 cups of water which amazes me.

Sheenaleer,
I just found this team and read through this post. I have a wedding next week and know that I won't be able to follow for 3 weeks but I am going to go week one this next week and see if it does anything for me. I bought the Eat Clean book yesterday and have just started looking into what I can do.

Good luck with the plan!

Anyone else want to join? Would really love some people to go through this with me.

Day one went well, I followed the meal plan and chose almonds for my snack. I think net time I will chose the apple sauce and shredded wheat, I think it will go a lot farther than 12 almonds, lol.

Oh, and I am going to be so sick of lettuce!

Congratulations, Lilly! "Still going" is half the battle despite a couple of bad days.

Overall, by consistently following the plan, your eating choices are clean, frequent, and consistent--the keys to success on this plan. And I'm assuming you're keeping up the water drinking.

I'm mad at myself for having NO plan at all after I stopped the 3-Week "Bust Your Rut." (Although I SAID I'd keep doing the good clean eating and just add more calories. Reality is that I did nothing after a few days. Rats!)

You're on the right track, girl, by choosing the cucumbers if you can't eat the celery snack anymore. Just be sure to pair it with a protein comparable to the almond butter ratios.

Day two is here and i feel great i had my celery almost an hour now and i'm still full cause i filled up on water, I was tempted to go on the scale this morning but i didn't cause i felt like a whale after drinking 12 glasses of water yesterday emoticon lol, I'm gonna try and do it again today though cause i know the end result will be good...how's everyone else doing?

I should honestly add now that i'm not sure if financially i can make all 21 days though but if i make a week or two i'll be so proud of myself...we'll see what goes down

Day one down. I didn't find it hard at all. I did prepare four days of the lunches so i could just take it out of the fridge and go. I did only two of the fish dinner's i didn't want to chance the fish going bad. I also found the Agave Nectar at my local Sprouts. I got the Irish Cream flavor for my coffee. I have to go slow weaning myself off the coffee and that is the only thing that I have to sweeten.

I just pray that the next 21 days go just as smooth. Who am I kidding.LOL

Hi Lilly!

I keep meaning to get back to it for a week. I'm still maintaining my last low weight--so of course, I'm happy about that. But that darn belly fat is still so aggravating!

I won't quit reading the posts, so I'll be here to cheer you on. Just check in and post your daily progress. I'll bet others are continuing to read the posts as well.

Good luck!

Hi all, I've been checking this post out a while now and finally think i'm prepared to go at it,so i went out saturday and bout everything i need except i didn't get any asparagas (which i didn't really mind) so i'm substituting with string beans and i'm using natural peanut butter instead of the almond, today is my first day and so far so good, looks like i'm the only one starting this week but i know some of you are still going strong...

Congrats to all who had great results emoticon

And good luck to those who are now starting or will soon be emoticon

Tidbits from "Turn Up the Heat:"

"Sufficient hydration creates the proper balance of salts and biles to extract toxins in the form of waste products from the body."

"If you do not drink enough (water), your body will automatically adapt the survival strategy of storing fat subcutaneously to act as insulation in order to maintain a constant core temperature. Even if your food program is completely on target, if your water intake is low, you will still hoard fat."

"The best choice of vegetables to enhance digestion are steamed spinach, asparagus, zucchini, summer squash, and tomatoes."

"A good multivitamin/multi-mineral combination taken twice daily--with your first meal in the morning and with lunch--to act as a shield against infection and to help prevent stress."

Good gracious! Those are the shortest tips I could find to type! But there is a lot of great information in there; it's just more length than I want to type! LOL

HI -

I realized today that I have to go off the program and get some carb loading. I have a 10k race on Sunday and I just won't be able to get the most out of it with them. Over all I lost 3.5lbs and 5.1%bf. I like those results. However I still would like to lose 10lbs bf but this is going to take some serious hardcore work which I will have to do with a regular clean eating diet and back to my heavy weights.

So I have decided to start carb cycling for the next 2 months to see if that gets me continuing in the right direction.

Good luck to those of you still on the plan.

This sounds great. I read all of the posts and boy o boy did take a few hours. I couldn't find the magazine or the book from Philip Goglia online so I decided just to copy and past from the posts on the first page. I have been eating clean (about 80%) for about a week. I have all of Tosca's books. So I will be starting this on Saturday. I am looking forward to the challenge.

I have stopped the plan also, only because I was so anxious to get back to the gym hardcore.I've eaten 100% clean for three weeks and have gotten back to the gym this week and in all I have lost 8lbs. I'm very pleased with my results and will keep the concepts of the plan in mind the next time a need a plateau buster.

I also am not enjoying this week, I miss my oatmeal. Choking down the eggs! But the results have been good.
Down 6#, BMI down, BF down. Lost an inch off hips and .5 off waist. I haven't been able to train as usual due to severe tendonitis. I really miss my weight training and kettlebells.

HI -

Susy - I tried to order Goglia' book but am having problems getting it shipped to Norway. So any info you can give regarding it would be great.

I am in the 3rd day of week 3 and I have to say that this week is the worst. I hate it. All starchy carbs are omitted and I crave them terribly. The only thing that has kept me sane is the Shredded Wheat and applesauce snack. I am also finding that I am not hungry for meal 6. Too much food which makes for even less cals. I did go off plan Sunday (grilled with friends) and Monday (carb binge) but overall I have stuck to the plan. I will continue until Friday but then I have to do a carb load on Saturday for a 10k race I am doing on Sunday.

Now I just have to sit down and make a plan going forward so I don't slip back into old habits.

I will weight myself on Saturday morning and post my final results.

Theresa

Hi all,

Technically, I am no longer adhering to the 21-day plan. I followed it 100% for 8 days. Today would have been the 17th day.

I wasn't tired of it or anything. (Although my husband was irritated with the constant fish for dinner and asparagus every night.)

My main reason for changing was that I didn't want to train my body to function at only 1,200 calories.
Although I HAVE to say, for low calorie, I'm very impressed with the nutrient-rich choices! Especially with the added supplements.

However, I've kept so much of parts of the plan; I've just added in additional calories. (And some nights don't eat my dinner (meal 5) anything like the plan. But that's not frequent.)

My weight loss recap:
Day 1: 149.4 - Although 1.5 was temporary water wt
Day 7: 145.8
Day 8: ???
Day 9 was when I came off the plan exactly as written in the magazine.
Day 13: 144.4
Day 14: 144.0
Day 17 (today): 144.4

Long story short: I keep bumping back and forth from 144.0 to 145.0 -- but no higher and no lower.

I'm happy! And I'll do the 1,150 calories again in the future on a limited basis as needed. It's a fabulous tool!

How's everyone else doing?

Susy
P.S. I think I remember that Phililp Goglia's book said that you could safely end the 21 day plan and increase your calories by 10% each week and not see a regain of weight--but you needed to keep up your exercise routine. (Someone who's read the book can correct me if I've stated it wrong.)

I am going to try this plan when I plateau. I am still losing 2-4 pounds a week right now so I am not ready for this yet. But I am looking forward to it, in a weird way.

Susy - I ordered my book yesterday and it should arrive in about a week. Just in time when this program is over. I really look forward to reading it. I also bought Tosca's Workout Journal. I'm hoping for some good tips in there too.

Yesterday was a strange day. I did great with all my meals. Packed the one's I needed while I was at a handball tournement for my daughter. Came home and continued with Meal 5 then went for 9 mile run. Got home drank a huge glass of water and put my dinner in the oven while I took a shower. Sat down at the table and ate my salad. I had a hard time getting it down because I just wasn't hungry and I took only 4 bites or so of dinner. So needless to say I really didn't get my 5th meal in yesterday. I just couldn't force my self to eat. Has my stomach shrunk to where I can't fill up with water AND food!?

When I woke up this morning I expected to be starving but I wasn't. I think my body has adapted to low cals.

This evening we are going to a friends to grill (first of the season). I offered to bing the salad. So I have decided that I will not take my own dinner but make clean choices while there. My friend alson works out alot so she understands the concept of clean eating. So I don't think I am in any danger here. So one meal today will be off plan.

Now because of this I decided to do a weigh in today and then again on Tuesday to see if this upset in the program will make any diff. I haven't lost any weight but I am down 2.1%bf. Now that's great. That means that I have lost a total of 5.1%bf in 12 days and that I am not losing any muscle.

So I'll let you all know how I fair come Tuesday.

I hope you are all surviving the weekend. Keep up the good work. We are almost there.

Theresa

Thanks for the input Susy on the ook. I think I will check it out. I have been a little concerned as to how I am going to continue after the three weeks is over. I think it is really nice and uncomplicated to have all my meals planned out. And when I try to do it for myself it takes so much time and I get frustrated.

Its the start of the weekend and I am not worried. All my meals are ready and and packed for when I am not home. I did it last week I am confident I can do it this weekend too. Next weekend will be a challenge for me because I have a 10k race and we will gathering at a restaurant afterward.

How is everyone doing? I am really looking forward to Tuesday morning when I can weigh myself. I know I am making progress because I can feel it and I am starting to see my abs. emoticon

Turn Up the Heat - by Philip L. Goglia

Great book! It does enlarge on more than what a brief magazine article can provide.

In the book, there is a 12-week program with more calories. But the 21 day diet is provided in the book--only to be used with prudence. It is called "Quickstart: A 2-3-Week Program to Maximize Your Weight Loss." (Chapter 4)

It is immediately followed by chapter 5: "Maintenance: Allowing Your Metabolism to Mature."

I started strong for the first work week and then the weekend came. Need I say more. That was a few weeks ago, but I am going to start back up on Monday the 27th. This is pretty much how I ate a few years back when I lost my initial 35 pounds so it really wasn't any different - just have the husband now and our son is actually eating "real" food now. :)

I did order the book, Turn Up the Heat, and am reading it now.

Do what you can - focus on what you can change, do not dwell on what you can't change.

I didn't stick to the order last week and skipped some proteins on the evening meals so I creeped back up. Still down 4#'s total. Starting yesterday I am following it 100%. I think I can eat like this forever but that is because my husband is out of town. I don't mind eating the same stuff everyday and there is no temptation while my naturally thin husband eats a bag of candy in front of me.

Ok, week two....lets just say this was not a good idea to do during PMS week. Being menopausal my schedule is all over the board, if I knew I would have waited to start the challenge. It turned out I was two weeks late. I can gain as much as 5 #'s in a week in water. So I felt like a failure with no lose just a bloated gain of two #'s. Hey life goes on.

I dropped the fish, but I am sticking to the same concept of carbs during the day, protein/veggies at night and I am still seeing awesome results. This is also my first couple weeks of eating 100% clean, so that probably has something to do with the loss as well. Officially I weigh in on Monday, but I'm already down 1.5lbs from last week!

Karen LA- Don't beat yourself up about not finishing. You just need to concentrate on getting well.

Hey guys,
Still in week 2 and still not seeing much difference in the way my clothes are fitting...plus I'm super exhausted and irritable. But to be honest, I would probably feel that way regardless of the "diet" as I am a big fan of eating whatever and whenever I want.

I had to take out the celery/almond butter snack as I was finding it very difficult to stop at one tablespoon! If it's not in the house I can't eat it...
What kind of fish is everyone eating? I am having a mix of cod, trout, salmon, sole and tuna...so good! I love fish though.

For those of you who have given up, I really wouldn't beat myself up if I were you...just about anyone will lose weight on a 1100-1300 calorie a day diet. This diet certainly isn't a "magic" combo of the right foods...it's just another low calorie diet. So if you hate fish, who cares? Just eat in the same calorie range and you'll probably see similar results.

KAREN-LA - Sorry to hear that you are not well. But don't let that get you off the plan of clean eating. You don't have to do this plan to eat right and still lose weight. This plan a on the extreme side. And as the article says 'the plan is designed with a shelf like of three weeks and should not be extended beyond that', 'this plan restricts caloric intake more than generally recommended.'

So continue to eat clean and you will still see results.

I think my body has gotten use to the lower cals because I am no longer hungry or tired and I still have 3 days to go in week 2. And I have been able to keep up my normal workout routine, though I have tapered back my running due to a 10k race next week. I actually look forward to all my meals. Next week is eggs for breakfast so I am going to miss oatmeal with mashed bananas big time.

How is everyone else doing?

Well today is day 3 on week 2 and I definitely feel less energy and at time a bit hungry but it's not so bad. I am still keeping myself busy which helps.

I didn't run today but I did 45 min on the ET. That was so boring. 45 min of looking out the window and thinking 'the suns out and I should be running'. But I have a race next weekend so I am tapering my runs so I am not too exhausted.

I am starting today.

Last night I bought veggies & fruit for the whole week. There weren't any mixed berries at the store (no raspberries, blueberries, and the blackberries were $6 a pint) --so I am eating strawberries for dessert this week.

For breakfast—I did not realize you couldn’t doctor the oatmeal—I researched and found a great recipe for the making steel cut oats in the slow cooker— I added cinnamon, tsp vanilla, tsp of agave & 2 strawberries in my oatmeal. I made this batch for 4 days. The new batch will be with out the goodies.

For my summer squash I made it into a salad using a mandolin. I sliced 1 summer squash and squeezed 1/2 a lemon,1/2 tsp brown rice vinegar, and salt and pepper. That was delicious.

I am going to complete this program!!

I have had to alter the dinners in week two. A week of fish is enough for me. I have a hard time with fish anyways, and I couldn't do anymore. So I'm having chicken. I can't see that this one choice would cost me a lot in weight loss. I'm keeping with the overall concept.

I did learn yesterday about the importance of not skipping meals. I missed my 4:00 meal and I got home close to 5:00 and I was starving. I had thoughts of sabotage and ruin, but I made it through with a small bowl of kashi go lean cereal. I know it's not on the plan, but kept me from going way off. Doing great today and going to the gym.

Day 8 (week 2, day 1) didn't go so bad but I did make a slight adjustment to the menu because I ran 8.5mi after breakfast. I decided that on my running days I will replace meal 2 (celery or cherry tomatoes) with a snack alternative. I chose 1/2 cup shredded wheat with 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce. Then I will add a meal 6 with 10 cherry tomatoes. On ST days I will follow the menu at stated since I don't burn as many cals those days.

Today was actually the first day I have been tired (but of course I didnt' sleep well last night) and hungry. But I drink green tea between meal in addition to my water and that helps the hunger alot.

Hope everyone else is having a good start to week two also.

MOM2BOYS04 - I survived the weekend by keeping busy, having my meal pre-prepared And timing my meal with the rest of the family. But often their dinner time is my meal 4 so I munch on my celery while I make their dinner. Worked.

Now I am on to week 2 tomorrow. I'll post first weeks results then.

Good evening

You are all doing great.

Focus Create Perfecion!!

Karen - You might get your thyroid checked too. This can have an impact on weight loss.

I will be weighing in tomorrow and I'lllet you know my results. I'm not expecting the big numbers you all seem to be having but I'll take what I get.

I have done my shopping, chopping and cooking for the next week and am ready to go.

Question: Can I subsitute the 1/2 baked potato for a 1/2 sweet potato? I ask because I have some that need to be used.

Ok, I started out this last week really well. The last half I didn't do as well. I was a very stressed menopausal women. I only lost a couple of #'s. Hey I'll take anything. So, I'm starting over or at least where I left off. I am very puffy this AM so water retention is a given.
The reset button has been pushed.
I can do this.

What were some of the mental statements you guys were telling yourself to get you threw the hard times?

What were the most helpful things you did this last week that I can carry with me threw this week?

Okay I have gone up 3 lbs in less than a week. The only thing I can say is thank g-d I am having my hormones tested this week to rule out anything. This has been very difficult 9 months for me. I lost my job and decided to quit smoking and drinking and put on 13 lbs in less than a month. So now that i am really trying to watch what I eat and have put on weight I know something is wrong with my body which is very frustrating. I kinda wish is something hormonal but I really don't because I would rather have control over my body than the other way.

I have been drinking at least 96 oz of water but we all know this plan is very little amount of food anyone could lose weight on it. I am still on the plan and plan to follow it until end of wk 3.

Week 2 wasn't as successful as Week 1

emoticon

But I know why

I didn't really follow the plan too faithfully (Easter & my birthday)
I didn't get to the gym/workout enough
I didn't plan ahead and have the foods portioned and ready to take as I did Week 1

Good thing is I didn't gain any weight! Stayed the same, the other good thing is people are noticing and making comments....woo hoo!

From reading the thread I am going to increase my water this week. I am going to get to the gym more. I cooked up the chicken on the BBQ tonight. I am making a batch of oatmeal (steel cut oats) right now. I will measure out and pkg my snacks. I think I will give week 2 another try.

I also started on the 13th. I have an injury which has set back my workouts so I thought this was the perfect time. I am down 5.5lbs. and very pleased. I do lose weight easily when I eat perfect. My water intake is 81oz. a day and that is pretty normal for me.
I did have 2 evenings where I did skip the last protein, I was just too full but I know that is a cheat as well.

Karen, don't get discouraged! It is now day 8 for me and I took my measurements this morning....lost an inch off my hips and that's it! Everything else stayed the same.
I am not weighing myself because I hate the way a scale can destroy your entire day and the way you feel about yourself. Also on a plan like this it is possible to retain some water...I've heard that your body holds onto water during weight loss..especially if you're working out at the same time.
I am also disappointed with the first week results but I am going to keep going and hope for the best!

Karen - Please don't get discouraged. You are probably one of those people where instead of 2 days to make results you need a few more. Maybe you will get a big surprise come Wednesday when you change your meals a bit. If you are not drinking enough water this could be making an impact too. Another thing to consider (which is true for me) is when TOM comes to visit. I am always up on my weight before and during. Also, could your workouts be effecting wieght gain (Muscles?).

There are so many possible reasons for why the scale went up. But don't get discouraged and don't quit. It's great that you have managed to come so far. This is the main reason why I will only weigh myself once a week. I hate disappointment.

Okay today I weighed myself and I am up 2 lbs. Something is wrong here. I was eating so bad the week before this no matter what i should have dropped weight. I know I could drink more water but if that is the only reason I am not losing then something is wrong and trust me i have been more on plan with this plan than I have ever been in my life. I am actually proud of myself for following it for so long. I am only on Day 5 but not to see any weight loss is just amazing. I am very upset with this.

emoticon emoticon I made it through Saturday. Not easy though. We went to an exhibition that had lots of samples of various foods. I lived vicariously through my kids. I walked around with my chicken zucchini rice bowl while they sampled everything.

Saturday is the only day my kids get goodies. So they buy a small bag of candy and watch a film. While I made chicken burgers for them for dinner I ate my celery and while they sat and watch Journey to the Center of the Earth and munched away, I ate my dinner slowly.

I didn't get in a long run but I did get a good 6 miles. I am also finding that I am more productive. I get more things done around the house. I'm finding this is helping me stay on the program so I don't think about if I am or not hungry. Then suddenly it's time for my next meal.

Today may be easier because my son has a football tournement and I can pack my meals to take with me. I don't exercise on Sundays so energy should be okay.

How is everyone else doing?

PEARLDICKENS - Good for you for holding to the plan even after all your troubles. Just goes to show that you can do anything you put your mind to and really want.

I woke up today so hungry that I was shaking while making my breakfast. Oh My! Today is my day for a long run but I think I have decided to just walk/run for 2 hours and see how far I get. I usually try for 20km (12.5 miles) but don't think I have the energy for it. No problem. My Half marathon run isn't until September and the 10k I will be doing in 2 weeks I'm not worried about.

I did look ahead at next weeks menu plan and I can say that I am not ready for that one. It's the same plan but with less starchy carbs and one less meal. I think next week will be the challenge. But for right now I am hoping to get through the weekend.

Keep positive. We can do this!! There is only 2 weeks left.

Thanks for all the tips! I didn't get to try them out though. On my way to the party I got a flat tire. The second one this week! And my tires aren't low on tread. IDK. We're going to discount tire tomorrow. Anyways it's kind of funny to me that the magazines tells you to plan the diet around a non stressful time. Well if I had a crystal ball I would have never started this week. Despite flat tires and frustrations with my students I've stuck with this plan, and I think I'm seeing results. I don't want to get to exited yet. I'll officially weigh in on Monday. I hope everyone has a strong and determined weekend!

Here are two things are constantly say to myself that actually helps.

Focus Creates Perfection

And

Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.

Think about these two statements when you are about to go off the plan. Say it enough times throughout the day and you start thinking that way.

Today was a good day but I did feel a bit hungrier. I didn't do any running today but I did some ST. Tomorrow will be interesting because I have a 2 hours run in the morning. Hopefully it won't be too bad because breakfast is just carbs that can be burned off anyway.

Good luck for the weekend!

I'm pretty worried about the weekend. I have my meals made, and I know if my husband eats crap he'll eat it in his truck (because it will be fast food), but I have a party to go to tonight, and that has me a little concerned. It's at 7:00, so I'll already have had dinner. I just don't want to drink any alcohol. I'll just stay consistent. Like you said I want the long term results more than I want the current temptation.

LOL I'm one of those people that get on the scale every day. Although getting on the scale just once a week has the benefit of seeing a much larger loss at one time!

Recap:
Mon 4/13 149.8 (but I believe 1.5# was water weight)
Fri 4/17 146.0

So in actuality, I feel I've lost 2.3 #'s in four days because the water weight would have been gone anyway after a day or two.

Yes! I'm worried about the weekend! My life is so scheduled during the week; it does feel easier to stay on track then. But I'm sure we'll all make it through. We've got to WANT the results more than the current temptation. (That's what I keep telling myself when I'm tempted to stray!)

Exercise: I hadn't been exercising. I started last week but I wouldn't call it intense. I use a few strength training machines and then I do some free weights. Last of all I stretch. And I'm feeling better. (Hey, this is in addition to all the cleaning I do at work!) LOL
