Everything else: on hold!

My brother did come up to visit over Thanksgiving. We had a lovely visit, even though COVID meant we stayed at the home base! We now have a handful of cases here in our area. My brothers area is still COVID-free. We all wear masks everywhere we go, but I am surprised at how many people still do not.

Yesterday was a wonderful day walking on the beach with my son. We had a good time and then came back to the house and made Mexican tortillas. Today DH & I went out in the boat. It was chili.

Here it is Wednesday again. Whew! Where does the time go? Today, I left early for town. I met a friend and we went for a short walk. It was really nice to have someone in person besides family. When I got home, I thought I would eat lunch and then do something constructive. My mistake was turning on the tv while I ate lunch. That was the end of productivity. After an hour and a half, DH came home and more tv. Lol, Shows what my weak areas are. Something about a screen that sucks me in and I don't come back out.

Lol, absolutely every little bit helps. I hope you had a great time. I REALLY had fun junking out and now it feels good to get away from that. I ate LOTS of cupcakes. (my favorite). I usually don't give myself permission to just eat as much as I want so it was a dream come true. Sometimes it is important. Lol. We can and will be stronger for the delight of indulging.

Thanksgiving weekend here, so family gatherings, too much food, and lots,of sitting... although we did all go for a big walk at the lake yesterday, and I snuck in 10 minutes with my hoop.

I am really learning to enjoy doing the things that take care of my body. I am also learning that it is a choice and I better make that choice to enjoy my life and be able to care for others. If I continue to say I don't have time to care for myself, I won't feel as good as I could, do as much as I would like, and someone will eventually have to start taking care of me. I just need to remember that there IS a decision to be made and I better choose wisely. Embrace the journey and the process. Our bodies are so amazing especially when we REALLY take good care of them. I am excited about all the things I am learning from this challenge.

That is great you had a good week. I always find a change in season always gives me a skip in my step. It is like a reboot. I use anything I can find as a reboot. lol. That is a whole lot of carrots. We eat a lot of carrots. I bet homegrown is REALLY GOOD. That is great that you are whipping the nightly snack. I bet the kids and adults do miss the parades. So many things to miss. How are the kids handling all the COVID stuff? Sound like you have had a busy week with lots of activity. I am proud of you.

I have had a busy week but I have taken time in the evenings to hula hoop. Ahhh! It has been wonderful. It is lower humidity and a tad cooler. So my hoop sessions have been amazing. They have lasted a couple of hours of just dancing my little heart out.

I have had a pretty successful week, all in all! I canít believe we are now officially in autumn! I am gradually moving all my summer clothes back to the storage bins in the basement, and am slowly getting the garden harvested (30 pounds of carrots at a time...)

Review self-care: M-F:y
Evening snacking: M-F: this week I avoided after supper snacking except for one saltwater taffy on two evenings. I had purchased a couple of bags of candy for my grandkids. Since there had been no parades this year,they hadnít got in their usual supply of wrapped candy, which they carefully dole out from summer through Halloween, when they get a new supply! I treated them, but they shared by giving me two liquorice flavoured ones, which are my favourite!
Outdoors: M-F:Y, Lots of outdoor time this week. The fall weather has been beautiful!
Fitness activity: M: gardening and power yoga, T: Pilates, walk, W:some yard work, quick bike ride, Th: yoga, Friday: gardening

It's all good. It could have been so much worse. Times like this just gives me encouragement of why I want to be fit. It is not if something happens, it is when. I am starting to build my muscle tone up again. It always surprises me when I am able to do something without giving out or straining. I am really cherishing it and trying to use it as one of my "why's". I love that feeling. I am nowhere near where I want to be, but it is a very nice start. I am learning to love the journey. It is funny how when I ask older people how they stay on track, they just answer, I don't have a choice. I know exactly what they mean but I haven't gotten to that point of dedication. I am starting to see that it is about self-love and not willing to let myself go back to pain & weakness. It is hard to learn that but I am seeing that it my choice. I always think it is just exercises but it is so much more. I love the support you give me. Thank you so much!

Good job! It is hard to cut out those evening snacks once we have that habit. I am finding I have adopted a lot of "snack" times. My schedule is still a bit off. I have grandkids because schools are still closed until power is back on for most residences. We really have a good time together.

Over the summer I got in the habit of having some sort of snack every single evening, and it began to show. This past few days I have said no to after-dinner eating, and I already feel better for it. (Except I did have popcorn at the movie the other night.) my goal would be to make dessert of evening snacks the exception, just once in a while, so that is what I am shooting for for the fall!

You are so right about that. I haven't been hooping much especially with the twin hoops. Today I played with them. I thought I was doing pretty good with posture but the hoops tell another story. I also did the 6 weeks app. Ugh! It was tough. I am back to barely able to do the exercises. I ate everything in sight!

Itís so true DJ. A little activity makes a person feel so much better! The trick is to find the right balance between too little and too much!

Being active: M-Th:Y, Fri: DH and I took the grandkids out to the lake. We trekked the trails, then went to the beach to wade and throw rocks. It was lovely. I also did 20 minutes of yoga.
Outdoors: Yes, everyday. And yesterday, the lake!
Meditation: Yes! It has been a good week, so far!
Hooping: Still not back to it!

You are doing well. Little steps toward being active. Every little bit adds up. I am glad you are getting back to your meditation and I KNOW you are excited the yoga classes are starting back.

I am doing better at being active yesterday and today. I can tell a difference when I am active as opposed to sitting in the recliner. I feel more energy and not so stiff. Yesterday we went to the beach and walked a long way then swam. It was wonderful. Then I came home and swam in the pool. Last night, I did a yoga session. It has been a while since I have done any Yoga. Today we went out in the boat. Lol, while DH fished, I did Pilates. emoticon emoticon I am going to go swimming after a cup of coffee.

Being active: M-W:Y nothing too strenuous, but at least I did something, Th: yoga classes resume today! Yay!
Outdoors: We walk the dogs everyday, and I went for a bike ride last evening
Meditation: Yes! I am starting to get back to it. I have fit in a short practice almost every day lately!
Hooping: Still not back to it! And I have no excuse since the backyard is big and it has been a nice summer...

Jeepers, this summer has raced by! I donít know what happened to last week!

Being mindful: I did pretty well with this actually, while eating snacks several times, while sitting in the sun, listening to the wind in the trees, brushing the dog. It felt like a kind of meditation...

Yey Fran! Good job on your Pilates. It is hard when your hula hoop space is small. I have found that if you pretend your hands are stuck on the hoop and just move to see what comes out is an interesting experiment. It limits your movement to right around your body. Also practice isolations like two handed isolations, one handed isolations, ghosting isolations, smears, barrel rolls, not sure of name but you have it at your hips in both hands and you turn while bringing hoop up over head. It is such pretty move. Let me know it you need links.

I have been really thinking about balance. Small bits to start a habit is so important to me right now. My consistency is all over the place. So I am looking at my schedule and thinking about how to fit small bits into my day so other things don't take away my self care.

Thanks for your positive enthusiasm, my fiends!
I used two of the patterns from this blog: the pleated one with a pocket for a filter, and the round one that says you can make it without a sewing machine. I did use my sewing machine, and I altered the pattern to make it reversible, and also less bulky at the sides. Both are pretty simple to make. I ordered a stack of cotton blocks and some nose pieces from amazon so I could make lots of pretty ones.

I miss having my own space: the room from where I work, hoop, do pilates, is also the one that my boyfriend uses as storage room, so the space is always smaller...

Wow! Another week is flying by!

Fran, I love that you take so many classes in both fitness and language. A hooping class would be so fun!

We had a lot of family time this week, and I ended up cooking two huge meals for everyone. The garden is producing like mad, and I have been picking and cleaning non-stop. I got a lot of tidying done in the garden as well - got rid of some overgrown plants and replanted some, moved some, and removed a lot of weeds and dying flowers... it never ends!! I do love working in the yard though, so I enjoyed it all!

DH and I did squeeze in a bike ride at the lake, and that was lovely.

In creating my space, I set up my sewing area and organized my supplies to do some serious mask-making before school resumes in a few days. DD#1, SIL, and both grandkids will need a supply of masks, and I have a supply of cloth scraps to use up!

Yey! Congrats Fran on your German test. Gardens are so good. I never was around a garden growing up. When DH and I got married, we had four little tomato plants. They were so delicious. The next year, I asked for a small garden. I did not realize he was raised with large farms. He fixed me up with four acres of garden. I NEVER knew food could taste so good. I think that was when I learned to really love food.

Joanne, I bet you are glad to have the eye exam done. What are you sewing? I still have my sewing stuff but I got rid of my sewing room. I changed it to my exercise room. I think I still like to sew but never take the time to do so. So it must not rank that high on my list. Lol. I guess everything has a season. I do make time for a good card game on the computer. I too usually play way too long. Sometimes we need to get lost in a good game. emoticon

Yes, I have used them in cobblers, but in combination with other fruit; rhubarb Saskatoon is a favourite! They cook in the regular amount of time.

We went to the city yesterday for our annual eye exams. Masked the whole time. Then came straight home. It rained almost all day, so I did some sewing and some reading, then played a computer game for far too long. Nicer today so I hope to get back out in the garden!

Fran, Saskatoon berries are not exotic at all! They are also called serviceberry, so that gives you a clue! They are indigenous to western Canada and grow wild in ditches and pastures everywhere. Many of us have a plant in our yard to make picking easier. They are covered in clusters of small white flowers in the spring, then form red berries which deepen to a dusky purple as they ripen. They can be used just like blueberries, but are not quite as sweet and donít get as big. They have a small seed in the middle which miraculously disappears when cooked!

I love pesto! My goal for next year is to grow copious amounts of basil and make my own!

Joanne, what are Saskatoon berries? It sounds really exotic :)

I am waiting for the beans to mature and I am tending a small avocado (it sprouted at the beginning of July). So far my balcony garden wasn't very productive (the radishes made no radish, but only beautiful flowers - good enough for me). Herbs are growing beautifully and they taste delicious. I did some vegan pesto (no Parmesan) with my own basil yesterday and it was AWESOME!!!

That is awesome! Veggies are so good, but they are a lot of work. We really enjoyed our garden. Our garden lasted way longer than it normally does because the heat held off for a while. It was wonderful. Enjoy all the veggies.

My garden has started to produce an abundance of fresh veggies. In the last few days we have enjoyed several cucumbers, 2 zucchiniís, some golden beets And beet greens, carrots and potatoes cooked in a creamy dill sauce, strawberries, raspberries and Saskatoon berries. I have a big bag of Swiss chard to cook up with supper tonight!

It is so easy to slip into old habits. I have never been a big veggie eater until I found Sparkpeople. I agree, the more I eat them, the more I love them and the better I feel. Especially greens. They are so good for when under high stress. They are really good for the Adrenal Glands. I also find eating a lot of potatoes makes me feel better. They are rich in Magnesium. They always improve my focus and mental thinking.

Joanne, that page is so cute!!!! I bet planning has never been so fun ;)

DJ, I found out the hard way that meal planning is to me a necessity: without guidance I would order food out at breakfast, lunch and dinner or I would eat whatever I could think of (usually pasta) and the results weren't good so far. I love to have recipes to follow, especially when I know they are healthy :)

Awe, That is adorable! I bet it was fun. I am bad about procrastination and carry over myself. Sometimes I finally decide to put it back on the To-Do Later list and not worry about it anymore. Lol.

Fran, you are doing great! I am proud of you. Especially for meal planning. I really need to work on that. I have not wanted to cook for a while. DH started cooking out of desperation. I have started doing some now. This week I have focused on getting more protein and greens. It has helped a lot. I am feeling better. I need to work on magnesium-rich foods. It makes such a difference.

Fran, so good to have you back tracking with us. Thanks for the inspiration of using the markers! Tomorrow is the last day for my star chart, but I found an old book from my librarian days with blank theme-bordered pages - really cute patterns and layouts, but big blank areas for sending notes home from school. I am going to use those for setting up my day planner and success charts. And then I can colour the borders too , which will be fun!

The wonderful thing about yoga is that you can modify poses to fit your level. My yoga instructor always says to make the pose fit your body; donít force your body to fit the pose. Good advice in anything, I guess.

What do I need: Y, I started a list, and included what can I do to begin to attain what I read.

Lol, thanks. I miss my energy. The soft yoga on your deck sounds amazing. I appreciate you sharing what you do too. I have never done yoga outside. I will have to try it. I am learning a little more about yoga flow. I have always been guided into flow. I am now starting to learn to just move the way my body tells me I need to move. I am excited about yoga and scared by it too. I want to move to more advanced yoga but I am not sure when my body will be ready to be more advanced. So for now I will keep finding where my body is now and enjoy the flow that comes from where I am now.

I have definitely been enjoying doing my gentle yoga on the deck each day, and have spent so much time outside this summer. Although we have had a lot of rain, we have also had a lot of sunny days - most of our rain has happened in the evening or overnight.

Your chart is beautiful. You are doing really well on tracking food, outside, and yoga everyday. My tracking is nonexistent. I try but I am eating faster than I can keep up. I am doing okay with the exercises but it is a daily challenge.

I envy you with your paddle boarding DJ. I have done it a few times while on holiday, and I loved it! If I had a place at the lake I would definitely buy one, but it just wouldnít be worth it to have to haul it out there every time. I just wouldnít use it enough, and then I would feel guilty about not using it. It is such a peaceful activity, I would love to be able to do it more often.

We went for a bike ride with Rosie last night. She talked non-stop the whole time. It was such fun!

Absolutely! On so many levels. That is great! Here are just a few ways to count it as something new. Tuning into yourself, Enjoying the sunshine, trying new instructors, tapping into your senses, focusing on your why you exercise, etc. You are doing GREAT!

I have enjoyed this week's challenge.
Try something new: M:Paddle boarding T:Paddle boarding, took grandkids fishing (they caught their first fish) W: Hike Th:n F:Dressed up just because I needed a change of pace
10+ minutes of exercises. M:y T:y W:n Th:n F:y

I really liked what one of the yoga instructors said: If a practice is too easy, you get bored. If it is too difficult, then you may be anxious. If however, the practice is just right, flow will come.
