Secrets of Success

Exercising At Your Desk

As many of you do, I sit at a desk all day. And as many know this can severely limit the amount of steps you take during the day. Sometimes I would go home at night and realize I only had 3,500 steps for an 8 hour period. As my belly expanded and my knees ached after a full day at the desk, I realized I was more sore from just sitting than if I would have gone to a gym. Everything tightens up and aches. But what does a person do about it? It's not like you can go do a full workout when you are getting paid to do your job. (I keep trying to convince my boss that this would make me more productive but so far no go on the paid workout time.)

Idea #1
During my breaks I will jog/walk in front of my desk for ten minutes. It gets me moving during the day. If I can't do ten minutes, I will jog in place for a couple of minutes whenever I feel myself getting sleepy.

Do this every twenty minutes or so and all of a sudden your step count is on track. If you can't do this at your desk you can always head to the bathroom and march in place in a stall without anybody noticing. Even once an hour can add up fast if you walk at least 500 steps each time.

Option #2
I will also take 2 minutes each hour to do 25 squats. It takes 2-3 minutes each time. By the end of the day I can have 200 squats in.

Option #3
Another option is the desk workouts on Sparkpeople. They usually last 10 minutes and can be tracked right from the video. This one might require you to lock that office door and put in a pair of ear buds so that you don't have an audience.

All of these can be done in the privacy of your office. NO equipment needed, exercise in throughout the day, what more could you ask for. I know it's not the same as full workout but it does get you out of your chair and moving.
