“Whatever you are doing, keep it up!” Those were the words of my rheumatologist 30+ years ago after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called ‘ankylosing spondylitis.’ X-rays revealed my spine to be 100% fused, with pain and stiffness.

I defied the doomsday diagnoses given by an orthopedist 35 years ago, “Be prepared to be disabled and in a wheelchair by the time you are in your forties!”

To that I replied, ‘NO I won't! So, in keeping with my rheumatologist’, I did what he recommended. I stayed mobile and kept moving! I am now 74 and worked full time, in very physically demanding job—and retired in my 70th year.

The awful prophecy did not come to pass, as the Dr. Grim said. I never made plans for anything but happiness and a fulfilled life—and that is what has come to pass!

I love retirement, except I found a new career which is writing! I have added Author to my nursing career. More below.

Thank you for making all of us feel special. You have a gift to put things to paper that most of us can relate to and it brings about memories of long ago. I am saddened to see Sparkpeople changing formats, I will try the new version and do my best to maneuver around. I am not very tech savvy. God Bless you and hopefully I will get to meet up with a few people on the other site. emoticon
