God is so blessing me with improved health and being surrounded by loved ones. On March 4, I was blessed by a good surgeon and total knee replacement. Every part of the journey was a blessed one, including my level of energy, hospital food (albeit, one day), The key is in not overdoing my exercises. With every 60 minutes, I get 45 minutes of rest, ice (~20 min), and elevation followed by functional walking or projects around the house. Planning a simple meal is a great task.

12/25/17: Praising God for Day One having broken the Obese (class 1) category and am now living as an overweight person. This is a major goal met that I would not have achieved if it weren't for the regular 5% challenges and the many teams that participate including my own team where Teddy Bears rock! My team is currently working on an in-between challenge as the Winter 2018 challenge prepares their team pages for the New Year.

I have tracked my calories daily for over ten years. I have an excellent record of enjoying 5 to 20 fruits and vegetables (aka freggies), 8 to 16+ cups of water and relatively healthy doses of fiber, nutrients and micronutients daily. Yay! In the last eight years, I have also continually improved the quality of my sleep hours per night (8 or 9 hours is my new norm). I will always remain, a work in progress. Special thanks to all my SparkPeople leaders, coaches, teams and friends. You can meet your goals, too!

My next short term goal is Onderland. I am now 35 lbs to a healthy BMI which is my ultimate goal. Baby steps! I'm just fine with baby steps.

10/7/17: They say confession is good for the soul. I can no longer remain complacent. I now need to lose 42 lbs to get back into a healthy BMI. My knee doctor says I should not be cutting back on my walking, so with this new 5% challenge with so many great teams, it's time to get this show in the road. Teddy Bears Rock!

2/15/16: So happy to report that I'm a month into Onederland (under 200 lbs) and am now only 23 lbs over a healthy BMI. Happy, happy!

When asked at a small group of Christian men and women, what the best day of my life was, it brought me to the day I married John -- I was on the proverbial Cloud Nine. While I chose not to think about the worst day of my life -- as that would be a growth experience that I would probably never give up -- I gave thought to the second best day of my life: the joy of seeing the sea of beautiful people and reminiscing with loved ones at my husband's memorial service Jan 16, 2016. One of my Mission Group friends blessed me with the words, "I've never been to a more joyful funeral: Evelyn, you looked more like a radiant bride, than a sorrow-filled, mournful widow." That's the reflection of Jesus living in me. While waiting for loved ones to fill the front pew, I lip synced a big "thank you" to the many people present. Growing in faith and worship honors and glorifies our Creator, the Lord of my life. With Christ, all things are possible and I'm able to find joy in the difficult times (albeit, often in retrospect), as well as the little moments we share in those we bless, our loved ones, and small groups.

I am very grateful for the many teams and great health news I get through sparkpeople.com. I am now in Week Seven of my 22nd 5% Challenge with a whole group of teams and remain a faithful Teddy Bear (with friends throughout many of the teams). Oh how I love to share "bear bugs" with my teammates. We have four, and sometimes five, 8-week challenges annually. If you're willing to be an active participant (log daily -or near daily fitness minutes and try to adopt many of the recommended healthy living challenges), I'd be glad to let you know when the next challenge begins.

7/25/15: My immediate goal, is to work toward making it to Onederland. While I''m working on that with my current 5% Challenge, I hope to make it to Onederland during the Fall 5% Challenge.

On July 16, at the start of the SparkPeople 5% Summer 2011 Challenge, I reached my 100-lb weight loss goal having started this journey on May 31, 2006 and joining SparkPeople on July 24, 2007. Maintaining a healthy BMI for nearly three years reminds me that I must remain diligent to a healthy mindset. As of this writing, I''m preparing to begin the 5% Fall Challenge laterthis month, where I plan to get myself five pounds closer to a healthy BMI over this eight-week challenge, while striving to eventually regain a healthy BMI in Spring 2015.

Setting goals and daily tracking of food and fitness have been key to my success. I continue to enjoy weekly check-ins with friends along with the varied learning opportunities at SparkPeople. These work well with my short- and long-range goals. I have come to learn that food and I are best friends and that this may very well be a life-long relationship. I habitually remain on the cusp of an unhealthy relationship with food as I continue to enjoy food more than I should and take particular delight in making hungry-girl selections. The good news is I have learned to eat and love making healthier choices, such as eating fresh fruits and vegetables, curried lentils and spicy veggies. I turn to crushed red pepper in my purse to spice up some of my eating out.

Making good choices also comes with a wealth of improved health benefits and being able to wear smaller-sized clothes. I appreciate that our supermarkets continue to expand on their food offerings and the farmer''s market reopen, making it easier to lean towards eating more plant-based foods. Life is good! God is great!

I have since learned that God and my faith goals must be a part of everything I do in order to truly achieve balance. As such, I must live the words as Matthew wrote them, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)

For the February portion of the 5% Challenge with the Teddy Bears, here are my goals:

Workout 30 minutes minimum and track food daily. Complete two prayer shawls. Try 14 new things. Publish 3 blogs. These goals have been saved and tracked on a Wed, Feb 25, 2014 blog.

My Goals:
To ultimately lose 23 lbs to return to a healthy BMI. Then I hope to keep one hundred pounds off (completed July 14, 2011) towards a much healthier lifestyle; maintain a positive attitude and grateful heart; and celebrate life through the beauty of God's creation (through both people and nature's wonderment).

My Program:
Two programs: 1) stay within the 1260-1610 calorie SparkPeople range, and 2) more whole, unprocessed, and plant-based foods from two books: "Ultra Metabolism" and "You on a Diet." I am also getting PBS materials from Dr Joel Fuhrman (G-BOMBS) and Daniel Amen (Brain Health). Here are my 5% Spring Challenge goals:

FAITH: Spend time daily in the study or meditation of God�s word, knit 2-4 prayer shawls. Be open to making faith an active verb.

FAMILY and FRIENDS: Spend quality time (be present) with family and friends weekly. Listen well. Contribute heartily to the weekly healthy living challenges (daily participation within very good numbers).

FOOD: Daily: Track, eat five or more freggies, drink 10+ waters, meet 4-7 recommend levels of: calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, calcium, and sodium.

FITNESS: Track and average 30+ minutes daily. Sleep 7-9 hrs a night six days a week.

FUN: Do something fun at least three times weekly.
