I've reached a milestone and I don't like where I'm at. So it's time to get healthy because I'm kinda partial to living on planet earth.

April 30, 2009. That's the day my world came crashing down. That's the day I found out I had diabetes. I spent the next couple of weeks having a pity party. Why? Because I was having other health issues as well. I couldn't breathe and they thought it was congestive heart failure. What!?? It wasn't thank goodness. But I did have high blood pressure and blood lipid profile was not to be believed. And I was having "female" issues that turned out to be a warning sign of something not good.

But, you know what? The "poor me" routine wasn't really who I was. So, instead, I got busy. I went to a local diabetic education class. Then I found a dietitian to help me change my diet with the twin goals of losing all this excess baggage (aka fat) AND gaining tight control of my blood sugars.

From May until now (October '09), I've lost 50 pounds and have mostly kept my blood sugars to a normal, non-diabetic level. That's the good news. The not so good news was that the "female" problem turned out to be Stage 1 cancer. OMG!! What!?? But you know what? This time I didn't have a pity party. It was stage 1 (99% 5 yr survival rate) AND I was feeling healthier than I've felt in a long, long time.

So here I am. My journey to reclaim my health and manage my diabetes continues. And I can honestly say that getting that diagnosis probably saved my life. Why? Because I'm getting my health back AND I've met some amazing people from all over the world and all different backgrounds who've I've become close enough to call friend.

My Goals:
Since I'm a recently diagnosed diabetic who is also obese, I have 2 goals. The first goal is to normalize my weight. The second goal is to change my lifestyle to ensure I keep tight control of my blood sugar.

My daughter has added a 3rd goal. When I get down to 200 pounds I have to go to a belly dancing class with her. Uh Oh...

My Program:
I have made drastic lifestyle changes to reach and maintain my goal.

1. Eliminated ALL processed foods from my diet.

2. Eliminated ALL "white" foods from my diet (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes).

3. Reduced caloric intake to induce a 1 - 2 pound/week weight loss. (actually don't do this one anymore - there's no need as I feel full eating about 1500 calories a day).

4. Added daily aerobic exercise.

5. Added 3x/week anaerobic exercise.

Personal Information:
I'm originally from SoCal (born and raised), but moved East after I found the love of my life :)

I'm known as "jumpnfool" cuz I used to jump rope....a lot :)

I spent many years denying the fact that this former athletic body was getting fatter and fatter. Then this year, it all went south so to speak. I was feeling bad. I couldn't breathe and had "female" issues. :( I had a physical which told me what I suspected. I crossed the line and became a diabetic. And then I find out I also developed Stage 1 cancer :( :(

That was April '09. I had my pity party in May and then I got busy. I found a wonderful blog with warm, supportive members. I started down the road to my new lifestyle and I'm feeling better than ever. And then one day, one of those members posted a link to sparks. I took a look around and saw a lot to like. So now I'm a "sparkpeep". :)
