    The voting systems in our Countries vary greatly but we also have the 'two party' problem.  Which leads people to vote for their preference rather than their choice.  As in, I'd like to vote for Z but only X or Y have a chance so I'll have to vote for whichever one of those I'd prefer.  

    I think by 'ranked voting' you mean a type of PR.  I'm guessing the closest is what we call the 'Alternative Vote'.  As you say, ranking candidates in order of preference.  We had a referendum on it a few years ago which bombed.  Mostly 'cos the government told people it would cost too much and they wouldn't understand it anyway.  That despite the fact it is actually used in many systems here - just not for General Elections.  Sometimes I despair of people!
